Recommended spending money: Volunteers in Guatemala generally find US$100 per week to be sufficient for expenses, such as in-country tours and Spanish language lessons.
The currency of Guatemala is the Guatemalan Quetzal; visit [xe.com](http://www.xe.com/) to view the current exchange rate. The conversion rate changes daily so we recommend checking this again shortly before your program begins.
Our recommendation is to use a credit/debit card at a local ATM to withdraw local currency, as this is the easiest way to obtain local currency. Credit and debit cards can be used at ATMs, which are available in Antigua. We recommend contacting your financial institutions to let them know you're planning to travel to Guatemala, so they do not freeze your account due to suspected fraud.
Guatemala does NOT accept USD in shops. You can exchange larger denominations of USD cash for local currency in Antigua, however, the bills need to be perfect (no folds or tears) and you will need to take your passport with you.
Volunteers under the age of 18 are not able to exchange money in country without an adult present, and so we recommend our younger travelers bring a debit or credit card with which they can take money out of local ATMs.
