Agriculture is a central source of food in Ghana, and this project aims to be a sustainable food provider for IVHQ’s Childcare volunteer placements. If you’re someone who’s passionate about sustainability and is looking for some hands-on volunteer work, this project will be perfect for you.
As an Agriculture volunteer, you’ll be based on local farms, helping with both crop (corn, eggplants, capsicums and palms) and animal farming (pigs, rabbits, goats, chickens). You’ll be involved in clearing and developing land for crops, fertilizing, planting, nurturing, teaching farming techniques to locals, fencing, and assisting with purchasing, moving and caring for stock.
Your work will depend on the season and your exact placement, which will be determined based on the needs of the local community. You aren’t required to have previous agricultural experience to participate on this project, but you should come expecting physical work. More experienced volunteers may be able to assist in developing the project and teaching new techniques to locals, helping them to farm their crops and animals more effectively.
Work on the Agriculture project usually stops during the hottest period of the day, and during this time you can assist with teaching in local schools to ensure you have sufficient volunteer work.
Please note, resources and machinery are extremely limited on this project and most work is labor intensive. You should bring a flashlight, a lightweight scarf for sun protection, a hat, insect repellent, gloves, working boots and a water bottle.
This project has an extra cost of $49 per week for extra supervision, materials and logistics. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.
