I'm glad I could help paint a classroom and build a cinder block house. And I'm glad I met the people whose lives these projects would impact. When the work was difficult, knowing who it was for inspired me to go the extra mile. Volunteering was also an opportunity to meet people from around the world. The other volunteers were definitely a part of the program experience for me. Most of them were great to get to know.

I fell in love with Tanzania. The people I met will live in my heart for years to come. There are countless challenges involved in travel and volunteering of this kind. Being ready to improvise is essential. But mostly, I would say, just give yourself over to the experience. Let go of expectations and just go with it. If you do you will be rewarded.

I feel as if I not only gained perspective and the opportunity to travel whilst supported by others and locals but also so many friends! We had so many different people whilst I was there volunteering and some of them have become my closest friends. The program in Tanzania is well set up and very supported and there were so many things to do and explore from Arusha including amazing safaris in the Serengeti and beach getaways to Zanzibar. I gained so much love for the children at my placement and felt so much love in return. This experience showed me the potential for travel and the ability to have fun and explore whilst helping and supporting others.

My experience living in the Maasai community was life-altering to me personally. I have made lasting friendships and hope to return in 2024 to continue my assignment working in the school. I loved my charming cozy hut in Maasailand! And the meals are excellent! The cooks (mamas) definitely catered to my vegetarian diet.

I plan to volunteer again in 2024. Best decision for 2023 was volunteering with IVHQ and the local team in Tanzania.

I am leaving my program feeling on top of the world. I have had the pleasure of meeting so many incredible, beautiful people through the program and on the ground. The volunteering really gives you a great insight into how different people are living their lives and it’s a great feeling when you can help in any small way. You learn so much, every day is completely different.

I would absolutely encourage someone to take part in the Tanzania program. It is completely life changing, but it is also what you make it. You have to give it your all and you will not regret it.

The guidance from IVHQ was incredibly good. I had never undertaken a long and distant journey before this international volunteering experience, which caused some stress in terms of arranging a passport, visa, insurance, and so on. However, I could turn to the organization with all my questions, and I received prompt responses. This made the preparation process very smooth, significantly enhancing the overall experience. The itinerary and checklist available on the IVHQ website were also valuable resources, providing excellent guidance.

The local team in Tanzania provided us with excellent support. They gave us necessary explanations, guided us for as long as we needed, and checked in on our well-being at regular intervals. They were always in good spirits and created a warm atmosphere, making me feel at home.

I love that the local mothers prepare traditional dishes for us. It enhances the overall experience, and despite being different from Western cuisine, I enjoyed most of the meals. They put in a tremendous effort for the volunteers.

It is not easy to make a contribution. On the one hand, there is the language barrier, and on the other hand, it takes some time to gain the trust of the healthcare professionals in the hospital. However, this improved after some time. I feel that I made a meaningful contribution and this gave me a sense of fulfilment.

Through this experience, I have gained various skills on a personal level, such as increased independence, appreciation, the ability to put things into perspective, and much more. On a professional level, I have learned to think critically and clinically. It was an incredible experience for which I am very grateful. I was regularly confronted with poverty and other distressing situations, which has increased my appreciation and gratitude for my home. I have immense respect for the people and culture in Tanzania; it is an incredibly beautiful country. To those who are hesitant about doing this, I would say, "just do it." It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that contributes to your personal growth.
