Many locals in the Cape Town area enjoy the companionship of having dogs and cats. Sadly, many do not have the necessary knowledge to properly care for their pets, and often they cannot afford proper animal care.

Animal Care volunteers will be working at the local animal shelter in the community of Grassy Park. This project is perfect for anyone who is passionate about animals and enjoys spending time around dogs and cats.

Childcare in

Many South African children grow up with limited access to education, with only 17 out of every 100 children having the opportunity to attend a pre-school. As a volunteer on the Chilcare project in Cape Town, you will contribute in a large childcare center that works closely with the local education department and aims to provide high quality care and education to children from nearby farms and townships.

Childcare volunteer in South Africa with IVHQ

Childcare volunteers play a dynamic role in enriching the lives of these children and assist with a wide range of tasks within the center. This can include teaching, tutoring and caring for children, organizing games and activities and helping with general duties to assist with the day to day running of the center.

This project is well suited to caring volunteers with great levels of enthusiasm and energy who are interested in supporting the early stages of children’s development.

As you will be working alongside local placement staff, you aren’t required to have childcare or teaching experience to participate on this project.

The Holiday Club project is designed to keep students engaged during their school holidays and discourage any negative behavior which could occur if young people are left to their own devices during the holidays. Volunteers play an important role in helping to run this project, as the local staff do not have enough numbers to ensure it’s organized and carried out properly.

Holiday Club volunteer in the Table View with IVHQ

The school holidays fall in January, March, June, September and December, and during these months, only the Holiday Club project is available in Table View. Volunteers help to arrange and run activities such as mini putt, picnics, hikes, visits to the aquarium, power station or the beach, game days, craft days, baking days and more. There is a whole lot of variety and fun, as the idea is simply to give students fun and productive things to do during their holidays.

It’s important to note that if a holiday club activity requires payment of an entrance fee, you will have to cover this charge as the program covers the entry for the children.

Many community preschools and schools in impoverished areas in South Africa are unable to provide effective programs due to a lack of funding, resources and skills. Well-meaning local staff can be over-run by the workload of catering for large numbers of children, and volunteers make a real difference in enabling them to deliver the quality service they strive for.

As a volunteer in kindergartens, you’ll help preschools in disadvantaged communities, assisting local staff with teaching and caring for children who range from a few months old, up to 6 years. You’ll provide fun activities that help with development and learning, and have flexibility to use your own ideas in lessons and games.

Preschools are closed for the school holidays in January, April, July, October and December. If you apply for the Kindergarten project during these times, you will be switched to the Holiday Club project, or you can help out with activities on the Kindergarten project.

South African children are fun-loving and passionate about sport, and eager for any opportunity to play their favorite games. However, many schools in the community have a lack of funds and resource to provide physical education classes for their students. As a Sports Development volunteer, you will provide the supervision and guidance to enable students to practice and enjoy a range of sports and improve social skills.

Sports Development volunteers in Cape Town work with children aged between 6-12 years-old, planning and delivering innovative physical education lessons. You can focus lessons on popular local sports or introduce new ones. You will have access to the local curriculum to help guide your lesson planning. It is important to note that resources are limited and if you wish to introduce a sport, you would need to bring any equipment with you.

Sports Development in

After-school sport is hugely popular with children from low-income communities in South Africa, as a way to play their favorite games and spend time with their friends. Not only that, but it helps with their development and exposes them to better role models. As a volunteer, you’ll help to provide these programs to keep children busy after school and less likely to engage in negative behaviors, playing a key role in lowering some of the socio-economic problems often found in South Africa.

Sports Development volunteer in South Africa with IVHQ

You’ll act as a volunteer sports coach, and have three options to choose from for your project:

  • You can help to run the existing sports being offered, including skateboarding, netball, soccer, boxing or swimming. This involves practicing and playing these sports and running the program that is already in place.

  • You can be in more of a leadership role, working with the local team, analyzing the way sport is offered and finding ways to improve it.

  • You can run a sports clinic, teaching a sport that’s not currently being offered. This is likely to involve more planning and you may need to bring your own equipment.

The project runs in the afternoons from Tuesday through Thursday. In the mornings, you’ll spend time in pre-schools on the Kindergarten project, helping with games, activities and general duties. This is another active volunteer experience, working with younger children and helping their development.

The Sport Development project is closed for the school holidays in January, April, July, October and December. Volunteers during these months will be switched to the Holiday Club project. The project also doesn’t run on Mondays, but you can help to plan the week’s activities.

Surf Outreach volunteer in South Africa with IVHQ

The project is divided into a two part program. The first part allows volunteers the opportunity to work independently with a surf instructor to develop their own surfing skills. For the second part of the program, volunteers work with children from the community to help improve both their surfing abilities and general life skills. You’ll provide a positive influence and help to build their self-confidence by providing them with an opportunity to spend their free time in a healthy and productive way. The project is also designed to create a long term sustainability for the children of the community, that could in the future potentially become a career choice. Learning to swim, environmental care and shark centre training is also undertaken to educate the children about the ocean and its importance.

Please note, this project is subject to favorable surf conditions. If the weather is unfit for surfing, you can help to organize and carry out educational classes or beach games. The project is open to all volunteers who are competent swimmers - you don’t need to know how to surf to participate.

Surf, Skate and Swim in

This is an after school project with a difference, providing fun activities with some real x-factor for students from low-income communities. By keeping children occupied after school and providing them with confidence building activities, volunteers can bring valuable support and foster general positivity in the lives of vulnerable young people.

Volunteers help to teach valuable life lessons and teamwork through surfing, skateboarding and swimming. You’ll help to teach and practice these skills, and occasionally other sports, to students who range in age from 10-16 years old.

Surf, Skate and Swim volunteer in South Africa with IVHQ

For many of the children this is the highlight of their day. The project is an incentive for them to do well in school, as only those who attend school every day, behave in class and study diligently are able to attend.

You must be a competent swimmer to take part on this project, however, you don’t need to know how to surf or skate. You’ll have time to learn how to skateboard, and if you need surf lessons, a local instructor is available to help you. You should also bring your own wetsuit with you, as the wetsuits on the project are prioritized for the children. If you don’t have one, you can buy one in Cape Town - if you don’t want to take it home with you, you can donate it to the project when you leave.

As the Surf, Skate & Swim project is run in the afternoons from Tuesday-Thursday, you can expect to spend mornings assisting in the Kindergarten project or having surf lessons. You’ll get a free lesson per week, and extra lessons can be arranged through our local team at an additional cost. All outdoor activities are weather-dependent, and you’ll take part in indoor activities or plan future activities if the weather isn’t suitable.

The Surf, Skate & Swim project will close for the school holidays in January, April, July, October and December. If you apply for the Surf, Skate & Swim project during the school holidays, you will be switched to the Holiday Club project.

Many schools in low-income parts of Cape Town run off low budgets, with few teachers, high workloads and little chance for students to get close attention. As a volunteer, you’ll help to address these three factors, creating an all-around better learning environment and better education standards for students.

Volunteer teachers are placed in public primary schools, assisting local teachers and working in classrooms for students in entry-level classes. You will teach an array of subjects, focusing on assisting with basic Mathematics, English and Life Skills.

Wildlife Conservation in

Kruger National Park is home to an abundance of wildlife, including the ‘Big 5’ - lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalo. Originally established in 1898 Kruger became South Africa’s first official national park in 1926, and at nearly 2 million hectares it is one of Africa’s largest game reserves.

As a Wildlife Conservation volunteer you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of conservation work while being immersed in life on the reserve. You’ll be making a difference towards wildlife conservation and enjoying the spectacular wildlife environment that Kruger National Park offers.

Wildlife Conservation in South Africa - Kruger National Park with IVHQ.

On this project volunteers will first complete an introductory period where you will learn more about the work taking place on the reserve, reserve management practices, basic bush ecology training and about how your volunteer contribution is making a difference to the ongoing work on the reserve. Once work on the reserve begins, the following tasks can take place:

  • Orientation and bush craft training - covering animal identification and behaviour, dealing with potentially dangerous game, orientation and navigation as well as basic bush skills
  • Game drives
  • Vegetation sampling
  • Camera trapping
  • Habitat assessments
  • Monitoring of rare and endangered species
  • Location and mapping of injured animals by vehicle patrols
  • Assisting with bush and alien plant clearing
  • Vulture nest monitoring
  • Assisting with long term biodiversity surveys
  • Road maintenance
  • Erosion control measures
  • Fence line patrols
  • Disaster Management – drought, flooding, storms and wildfires
  • Any other tasks that may arise including manual labour and more mundane tasks

Conservation work is very diverse and dependent on many uncontrollable influences such as climate changes, environmental factors, animal behaviour and external human intervention. Many activities listed above are seasonal and therefore all activities cannot be guaranteed during your stay.

This project is perfect for anyone who is passionate about animals and wildlife conservation. It is also great for those looking for an experience away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You do not have to have any previous training or experience as volunteers work closely with the Field Facilitators, Reserve Manager and Scientific Coordinator on the project. However, all volunteers must have an adequate level of fitness given the physical nature of the work.
