Yes, you read the title right! You don’t need to be a pro surfer to appreciate the thrill involved in surfing, and surf enthusiasts of all abilities are welcome to join our Surf Outreach project in South Africa, helping to provide structure, learning and new skills to children from disadvantaged neighborhoods.
The project is divided into a two part program. The first part allows volunteers the opportunity to work independently with a surf instructor to develop their own surfing skills. For the second part of the program, volunteers work with children from the community to help improve both their surfing abilities and general life skills. You’ll provide a positive influence and help to build their self-confidence by providing them with an opportunity to spend their free time in a healthy and productive way. The project is also designed to create a long term sustainability for the children of the community, that could in the future potentially become a career choice. Learning to swim, environmental care and shark centre training is also undertaken to educate the children about the ocean and its importance.
Please note, this project is subject to favorable surf conditions. If the weather is unfit for surfing, you can help to organize and carry out educational classes or beach games. The project is open to all volunteers who are competent swimmers - you don’t need to know how to surf to participate.
If you choose to volunteer during the school holidays, you’ll help on a special holiday project, which involves a variety of activities aimed at promoting physical, social and personal development.
