I have way too many favorite moments from my volunteering experience in Morocco to put into words. From the times I spent with my students in class to the time I spent with them outside of class and the time I spent with the staff and the adventures I experienced on weekends, volunteering with IVHQ in Morocco was my favorite moment. I made connections with people that will last a lifetime.

Childcare in

Childcare projects in Morocco perform an important, two-sided role in society. They provide a supported developmental and growth environment for young children, and they allow parents to go to work, knowing their children are being well cared for. In disadvantaged neighborhoods, this is an important service that enabled families to be productive.

Teaching English in

Although the Moroccan government is working hard to improve literacy and promote professional development, a large percentage of Moroccan children and teenagers aren’t given the chance to acquire valuable second language skills. It’s well known that speaking a second language will enable students to further their education and integrate them well into the job market, but accessing opportunities to learn these languages is not easy.

Volunteers work with underprivileged children and adults, providing training in English and information technology. You’ll help to run small workshops, assist local teachers and organize educational games and activities for students of all ages. You can lead lessons, or pair up with another volunteer to deliver classes. You can also assist in summer camps during holiday periods.

Volunteers are also able to teach French, which is a popular second language in Morocco. If you can speak French and English, and are willing to volunteer teaching both languages, please include that in your application.

The nature of project work is essentially the same as our Teaching English project in Morocco - Marrakech. This project is better suited to volunteers wanting to be based nearer to the coast, where there are fewer tourists.

As volunteers work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to participate. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

Teaching French in

French serves as a second language in many educated communities in Morocco, and while it is considered an unofficial third language after Arabic and Berber, it is the primary language of commerce and economics in Morocco. A strong grasp of the French language is required for jobs in these sectors, but language lessons are out of reach for many people in low-income communities.

You’ll work with underprivileged children and adults, teaching French and information technology. Volunteer tasks include running small workshops, assisting local teachers and organizing educational games and activities. You can lead classes on your own or teach in volunteer pairs.

Women's Education in

Many women in Morocco suffer from poverty, illiteracy and unemployment, affecting their social standing and, in turn, their children’s education. Since a national directive in 2005, the Moroccan government has been working hard to improve women’s education and health, and is eager to promote income-generating activities for women. However, volunteers are still required to help to deliver these goals.

The Women’s Education project aims to enable local Moroccan women to improve their literacy levels in English, French and Arabic, and to provide them with professional development opportunities. You’ll volunteer in local organizations with local women and young girls. You’ll focus mostly on education and teaching English, and sometimes French.

Other tasks can sometimes include running cooking classes, sewing, computer training, offering academic support and occasional childcare. These tasks are dependent on your program duration and language ability, as longer term volunteers who can communicate in French or Arabic are more likely to be able to do them effectively.

Please note, volunteers must have an intermediate level of French and/or Arabic to participate.
