Both my placements for Teaching and Temple Renovation were perfect. It was awesome to actually see the work we had done. Volunteering with IVHQ has changed me as a person. Before I went to Sri Lanka I had never left the US, and truly did not understand how people lived in other countries, but after I volunteered it really opened my eyes and showed be a new way of life.

Cultural Immersion in

For those looking to experience the life and culture of a traditional tribal community in Sri Lanka, look no further! Not only will the Cultural Immersion project provide a unique insight into a way of life that locals normally only have access to, but you’ll help to actively improve the standard of living and wellbeing of the people who live there.

You’ll be based in a Vaddah community in Dambana. The Vaddah people are known as the earliest inhabitants of Sri Lanka. As a volunteer, you’ll stay with a local family, living life as they do, providing the benefit of cultural exchange and helping them where it’s required. You’ll develop a shared understanding as you learn from them and work with them to support the long term goals of the community.

You could find yourself developing community buildings such as schools, temples and pre-schools, helping with English language lessons, childcare or education in general. The rural environment and nature of this project means that schedules and work can vary greatly, so it’s important to come with an open mind and a willingness to help where it’s most needed.

You should expect not only a slower pace of life, but a basic standard of living, with outdoor showers, squat toilets and a woodfire oven.

The project is well suited to the volunteers who are willing to support and know more about the Sri Lankan indigenous community. If you are someone who wants to get out of your comfort zone, is interested in anthropological studies, or wants to learn more about new cultural practices, then this project is a wonderful opportunity for you.

Please note this placement is located in Dambana, three hours from Kandy. You’ll need to be comfortable being in a remote setting with only basic facilities. Most villagers also don’t speak English, so you’ll need to be creative in finding ways to communicate.

Wild Elephant Conservation in

Elephants hold great cultural and religious significance in Sri Lanka; however, they’re viewed as a nuisance by many rural people, as they invade farms looking for crops. The aim of the Wild Elephant Conservation project in Sri Lanka is to develop effective measures to resolve human-elephant conflict and to ensure wild elephants are no longer being killed by farmers.

Wild Elephant Conservation in Sri Lanka with IVHQ

This unique and exciting project gives you the chance to directly help wild elephants in Sri Lanka. Together with the local wildlife conservation society, you’ll assist in observing the behavior of wild elephants and carry out research-related tasks within the Wasgamuwa region, in the Central Province of Sri Lanka.

By volunteering with elephants, you’ll help with a range of tasks, including:

  • Observing wild elephants and human-elephant interactions
  • Monitoring the behavior of wild elephants and observing birds and other wildlife
  • Trekking to observe wildlife and birds, looking for signs of leopard and elephant activity
  • Observing various habitats and visit forest hermitages
  • Birding and observing nature around the volunteer camp
  • Monitoring electric fences erected to stop elephants from raiding village homes
  • Meeting with community leaders and members to monitor human-elephant conflict resolution projects
  • Gaining experience in the use of GPS
  • Getting involved in initiatives such as ‘Project Orange Elephant’ and using honey bees as an elephant deterrent.

These initiatives all aim to develop conservation strategies focused on mitigating human-elephant conflicts and conserving elephants, leopards, other wildlife and their habitats in the central and north-central provinces of Sri Lanka

It’s important to note you won’t be interacting with elephants directly, but rather observing their movements in the jungle.

The Elephant Conservation project has a minimum duration of 2 weeks. All volunteers take part in introduction week in Kandy from Monday to Friday, before traveling to the project site on Sunday. You must apply for the Elephant Conservation project no later than 2 weeks before you wish to begin.

Medical in

Training hospitals have huge benefits both for budding medical professionals and members of the community. They provide opportunities for students to see and experience healthcare first-hand, while locals have better access to affordable treatment.

Medical volunteers in Sri Lanka are placed in a training hospital in an observational capacity, shadowing local staff and providing assistance where necessary. Local regulations prevent volunteers from working alone, so you should not expect independent tasks. For this reason, this project is only for medical students; qualified professionals will find their skills better utilized on another medical project.

You can volunteer in a range of different departments and get an insight into many different medical fields. If you have a specific area of interest then please indicate it on your application, though this is not a guarantee you’ll be able to volunteer in that area.

  • Proof of current level of study
  • CV/resume specific to medical skills and experience
  • Letter of recommendation from a medical tutor or supervisor
  • Letter of intent, outlining why you’re volunteering and what you are hoping to gain

Prospective volunteers must apply for the medical project no later than six weeks before you wish to begin. If the above documents are not received by our local staff at least four weeks prior to your program start date, you cannot be guaranteed a Medical placement and should expect to work on another project.

Volunteers can provide great help in assisting with the long term development of these communities and the education of local villagers. This is a unique opportunity to experience traditional Sri Lankan village life and leave a legacy.

Teaching in

Private language lessons are often the best way for Sri Lankans to learn English, however the price can be too much for many. By bringing your skills as a fluent English speaking volunteer, you’re not only providing access to lessons, you’re bringing your skills as a language expert.

Volunteer teachers in Sri Lanka help in a range of temples, monasteries, pre-schools, disabled schools and village homes, where you will usually take one class per day with students ranging in age from 5 to 50 years old.

Teaching volunteer in Sri Lanka with IVHQ

You’ll generally be teaching under the supervision of local teachers. You’ll have guidance into exactly what you’ll be teaching and it’s expected you’ll set time aside each day to prepare your lessons.

As you will be volunteering with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to participate. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Construction and Renovation in

There are many stunning Buddhist temples throughout Sri Lanka, but while locals commonly help with cooking for monks, there aren’t enough hands to help keep the temples in good order. Similarly, local schools and pre-schools are hugely important for the next generation of locals, but without regular upkeep they can fall into disrepair. By helping to renovate these buildings, volunteers not only keep them looking their best, but you can also get unique insight into the local culture and construction methods.

Construction and Renovation volunteer in Sri Lanka with IVHQ

Volunteers help with whatever tasks are required to bring temples, schools and pre-schools back to their former glory. It often involves painting and cleaning, and those with illustration skills are also able to help to restore paintings or paint something new. If you’re interested, we recommend you spend time thinking about what you could do.

All materials are provided and there is an onsite coordinator to provide guidance to volunteers. The exact project you’ll be contributing to will depend on the local priorities at the time of your volunteering.

It’s important to note that during the monsoon season when it is wet, work may be disrupted and volunteers will be offered alternative project work.

Turtle Conservation in

The Indian Ocean is a popular area for sea turtles to live and breed in, however the turtle population in popular coastal areas is struggling to combat the effects of climate change and human population. Volunteers can help with intervention efforts helping to assist injured turtles and boost conservation around the southern coast of Sri Lanka.

You’ll be based in the town of Ambalangoda, contributing on conservation projects that are certified by the Sri Lankan government. Your focus will be caring for disabled turtles, promoting conservation and recycling awareness among locals, with an overarching goal of increasing the turtle population.

Your tasks can include cleaning turtles and their tanks, sourcing and preparing food, feeding the turtles, assisting with beach cleaning, maintaining hatcheries, relocating eggs to protect them from predators and releasing hatchlings. Duties are often seasonal so will depend on the time of year you’re in Sri Lanka. It’s important to be flexible and open to helping wherever it’s required.

Accommodation is an easy 5-minute walk from the beach and volunteer placement in a dormitory-style volunteer house, with comfortable but basic living facilities.

This project is open to all volunteers with an interest in conserving sea life and is well suited for those who are prepared to work hard and don’t mind getting dirty.
