Can I volunteer abroad with my children?
Certainly - IVHQ offers a range of volunteer abroad programs suitable for parents who would like to volunteer abroad with children as part of a volunteer family vacation.
Our friendly Volunteer Program Consultants are happy to support you in selecting the volunteer abroad program best suited to the ages and abilities of your children and your family travel desires.
Where can my family volunteer abroad?
IVHQ has family-friendly volunteer abroad programs in over 35 destinations with a special program in Indonesia which is only available to families and volunteers over the age of 30. If you are looking to volunteer in a different destination, we recommend that families with children under the age of 15 look at our programs which offer home-stay accommodation, rather than those which offer dormitory-style accommodation. This is provides families with greater privacy and the opportunity to be accommodated together in private rooms. Living in a home-stay is a unique experience, as your family can enjoy living alongside a local family, while learning about their culture, cuisine and traditions.
Our volunteer programs that can accommodate families together in home-stay accommodation include Indonesia, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Kenya - Maasai, Morocco, Nepal, Peru - Cusco, Peru - Lima and Tanzania. If you are looking for a more social setting and the opportunity to live in a volunteer house alongside other international volunteers, your family can enjoy the comforts of a private room while volunteering in Argentina. In Bali, families can also be accommodated together in private villa accommodation.
Please contact us if you would like to discuss the suitability of any of these volunteer abroad programs for your family, as we will be happy to support you with selecting the best destination to meet the unique needs of your family.
Please note that children under the age of 18 years are able to volunteer abroad with a parent or guardian on any IVHQ program, with the exception of the Italy, Romania, Brazil and Colombia volunteer programs.
Which projects are most suitable for family volunteer trips?
During your volunteer program, children and teenagers under the age of 18 will need to be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.
For families with young children, our Childcare projects are generally the most suitable volunteer projects, as these allow children to become involved and interact with the other children. A Conservation project may also be suitable for families with children who enjoy working outdoors and don’t mind getting their hands dirty! Our conservation-focused program in Indonesia includes family-friendly volunteer work like bird watching, community development and turtle conservation activities.

You will have your weekends free to explore more of the host country and local culture. You also have the opportunity to take an organized tour or safari with a tour provider recommended to you by our local staff.
How do we apply to volunteer abroad as a family?

Each application must reference the name of the other family members in response to the question “Are you volunteering with a friend, relative or group?”. This allows us to ensure our local staff can place and accommodate your family together.
How much does it cost to to volunteer abroad as a family?
Each family member will need to pay a Registration Fee and Program Fee for your family’s chosen volunteer abroad program. Take a look at our program costs to see our range of affordable program fees.
