My placement in Delhi was extremely rewarding and wonderfully exciting! I made so many likeminded friends that I'm sure will last a lifetime and my experience in my placement in a slum school in outer Delhi I cannot even begin to describe; it was profound and undeniably changed my outlook on life.

Childcare in

Many childcare centers in India operate at or near capacity, which can make for a challenging time for local staff. The aim of the Childcare project is to provide much-needed assistance within these centers, which can in turn provide greater access to care and education for children.

Issues such as poverty can present significant challenges to children growing up in India. However, dedicated assistance with both traditional and social education can make a genuine difference to their lives.

This project is well suited to caring and enthusiastic volunteers, who have an interest in working with children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Volunteers are placed at a number of different childcare placements, the majority of which are located in the area of Faridabad. Children at these placements are typically aged between 4 and 8 years-old.

All placements require volunteers to help the children with their education by taking English lessons, assisting with homework and teaching essential life skills, such as personal hygiene, while also arranging games and activities for the children.

This project is open to all volunteers who are interested in working with children, and as you work under the supervision of local staff, prior childcare experience is not required.

    Dentistry in

Dental tourism is increasingly popular in India, where foreigners travel to take advantage of cheap dentistry procedures compared to their home country. By shadowing and observing a local dentist, volunteers are able to see a range of procedures and learn by seeing them in action.

Dentistry volunteer in Kerala, India with IVHQ

This project is ideal for dentistry students in the early stages of their study, or even those interested in pursuing dentistry, who have no experience. Due to governmental regulations, volunteers are unable to do hands-on work, so more senior students or qualified dentists should have realistic expectations for what you’ll be doing. It may be best to use your observations as part of further research or a project.

The clinic you’ll be volunteering in is very well established and is run by an enthusiastic local dentist who is able to offer good insight into running an practice and individual treatments and procedures. This kind of experience is very similar to an internship.

The Dentistry project has a minimum duration of two weeks and a surcharge of $50 per week to cover the extra supervision and materials that are required. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.

      Health in

Healthcare volunteers in India can work in either local hospitals or slum clinics, shadowing well-respected physicians who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and expertise.

While hospitals are under-resourced and equipment is basic, these institutions are bound by government regulations and cannot allow international volunteers to perform tasks independently. Your primary role is to observe local professionals and learn about the treatment of prevalent diseases in India, and as a result this is better suited to volunteers with less experience. Volunteers generally assist with routine jobs, such as taking the height, weight and blood pressure measurements. During routine check-ups, volunteers can provide advice around nutrition, general health and sanitation.

Volunteers on the slum clinic placement will have the opportunity to perform more hands-on tasks such as treating minor injuries as well as cleaning and bandaging wounds. This can be a busy but rewarding placement, and it’s better suited to qualified professionals or experienced students.

More experienced volunteers may request to work in their area of expertise or training; however, it is important to note that volunteers are only able to perform tasks relevant to their skills and qualifications.

Long-term volunteers (three months or longer) will have more scope to assist with hands-on tasks and fully qualified doctors can occasionally assist with surgical procedures, subject to their qualifications and experience.

Volunteers must present their practicing license/certificate or proof of medical study to our local staff upon your arrival in Delhi. This can be a letter from your professor or a copy of your academic transcript.

There are more than 20 different languages spoken in India, and English is often seen as a universal way to communicate between people from different regions. This means it’s an important language to start learning from a young age, and fluent speakers are considered hugely valuable teachers for young children.

As a volunteer on the Kindergarten project, you can give young students a good start to learning the English language. Kindergartens are typically associated and housed within primary schools and you will be working in the junior classrooms of schools throughout Kochi.

A special project for groups of eight or more, this is a customized opportunity designed to enable groups to do specific outreach work in communities in and around Delhi. These week-long campaigns involve visiting communities alongside local professionals to provide basic health services to those who need better access to them.

You can help to treat and educate patients, provide check ups and help with health education. If your group has a particular medical specialty, then your campaign can be tailored to provide specialist services in dentistry, physical therapy or nursing. Groups can be student- or faculty-led, and the level of care you provide can also be customized to the experience of your group, from pre-med students to qualified professionals.

A volunteer Medical Campaign involves visiting and working with up to five communities throughout the week. They enable both children and adults to receive basic medical services in their own neighborhoods, making them much more accessible.

The Medical Campaign program fee is US$370 per person for the week, and includes 24/7 support, accommodation, meals, airport transfers, Medical Campaign, private transportation to placement daily, language translators, program orientation and discounts on language lessons.

Kerala is recognized for having the best healthcare system in India and doctors in South India are well known to be among the best in the world. Medical and nursing volunteers on the medical project will shadow a local professional, either a doctor or nurse, and will observe all aspects of their work, including patient consultations and surgery.

As a volunteer on the Medical project, you can work under the supervision of practicing medical professionals within modern private hospitals. You can choose from a wide range of specialties and have first-hand access to the daily duties of leading doctors and nurses working in that field.

Departments that volunteers choose from can include paediatrics and neonatal, imaging and radiology, emergency and critical care, oncology, cardiology and cardiac surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, gastroenterology, urology, gynaecology, transplant surgery and one of India’s largest and most advanced dialysis practices.

Volunteers must be medical students, nursing students or students of another relevant medical field. The majority of volunteer work on this project is observational but medical students may have the opportunity to do basic tasks, which is at the discretion of the doctor you are working with. Nursing students can expect more hands-on work, including blood pressure measurement, helping with bandages and other basic tasks. Community-based health camps can also be arranged for groups of volunteers. In the past, medical students have also conducted first aid workshops in school.

Please note that only breakfast and dinner are provided on this project and lunch needs to be purchased at your placement, for a very affordable price.

The Medical project has a minimum duration of 2 weeks and a surcharge of $50 per week, which covers the supervision, materials and logistics required. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.

              Slum Teaching in

For many children in India, school is simply not an option. It is estimated that there are more than 11 million marginalized and vulnerable street children in India. Many of these children work on the streets with their parents selling goods, foraging and performing to make a living.

Volunteers play an important role in providing these children with access to basic education along with new opportunities they would otherwise been deprived of.

This project is well suited to volunteers who are passionate about education and providing support for children with limited access to education. Your tasks can include taking English or other lessons, facilitating games and introducing the children to activities they otherwise would never have had the chance to take part in.

This project is greatly valued by the local community, due to the new perspectives and lessons that international volunteers provide. As a result, volunteers should expect large class sizes of around 30 students, generally aged between 5 and 11 years-old.

Volunteers will take classes independently, with limited teacher support. You need to plan your lessons to ensure classroom activities actively engage the children for the duration of the lesson. As a result, it’s best suited to those with teaching experience.

Having a child with a physical or mental disability creates negative social stigma for families in India, and low income families can find it especially difficult to support disabled children with the care they need.

For people living with special needs, extra attention and mentoring can make a significant difference to their education. As a volunteer, you’ll play an important role in providing individual assistance in learning tasks that students would not otherwise have.

This project is best suited to volunteers with a caring and compassionate nature who are patient, hardworking and willing to offer support with a range of duties. You can expect to help with basic sensory activities, life skills, learning English or help with physical movement.

Volunteers work with disabled children aged between 2 and 22 years of age in schools and care facilities. Disabilities range from severe to mild and many of the individuals supported by the project have both mental and physical disabilities. In addition to their disabilities, students only have a very basic understanding of English, so you’ll be supported by expert local carers at all times.

You are not required to have any previous experience to join this project, though an understanding of special needs education is beneficial.

                  Teaching English in

Children growing up in disadvantaged areas around India often face significant challenges, and it can be hard for them to grow beyond the lives they, and their parents are born into. However, by acquiring new knowledge and skills, their chances of living productive lives increase.

One core skill that opens up new opportunities is the ability to speak English. Volunteers play a valuable role in providing the skills of a native or fluent speaker, and helping children to practise the English language.

As a volunteer on the Teaching English project, you will focus on developing the students’ conversational English, while also gaining new skills by working in a new cultural environment. Volunteers on this project can expect to assist in developing creative lesson plans and teaching classes independently with the support of local teachers. Students range in age from 5-11 years-old.

Volunteers are placed in a range of different schools in Delhi, the majority of which are located in Faridabad. As volunteers work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and local teachers, you don’t need to be a qualified or experienced teacher to participate; however, you must be fluent in English.

We encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

This means those who learn the language at school can have far greater prospects later in life, both in Kerala and elsewhere in India.

The Teaching project is well suited to volunteers who have strong English skills and a passion for education. Volunteers on this project will work in schools in Kochi area to build the English language ability of children between the ages 6 and 12 years old.

Volunteers work alongside local teachers and project coordinators and may also be required to assist with math and science lessons. Classes are typically small, with one volunteer working with no more than 10 students. You can also team up with another volunteer to teach in pairs

You are not required to have previous teaching experience to participate on this project, however we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, such as a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Women's Empowerment in

Women’s empowerment in India is still a relatively recent concept, and many women live very traditional lives. By taking free classes for local women, volunteers can help to teach English, and educate them on contemporary social issues to help build independence and confidence, and enable them to combat conservative inequalities.

English is an official language in the city of Kochi, and women who can speak it are much more likely to find jobs. However, lessons are often expensive and inaccessible. Volunteers provide an alternative by hosting small classes with women from 20 to over 70, to increase their confidence and chances of finding jobs. By also focusing on social issues, you can add to the value of the class by empowering women.

It’s important to recognize that the context around women’s equality in India is far different than in other parts of the world, so volunteers should have realistic expectations around what you will achieve. The main focus is on speaking conversational English using contemporary topics.

This project is run with the help of a dedicated local co-ordinator, who can help to prepare lessons and provide resources. This means you don’t need prior teaching experience, but it is important you have a good grasp of the English language. We encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, such as a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course.
