After volunteering with IVHQ in Bali my life has done a complete 180. I went to teach English however came home learning way more than expected. Each child I met left an imprint. I share my experience every chance I get. I'll be volunteering again with IVHQ this December in Guatemala, and each year plan on setting a new destination.

Help with upkeep and renovation for schools and community centers that can’t always afford to pay for the work themselves. A hands-on project for those who enjoy hard work and seeing tangible results.
School and Community Renovation in
Schools and community centers serve important functions for the wider Lovina population, but they often don’t make enough money to afford renovation work to keep their facilities in the best condition. As a volunteer, you can help with important upkeep to make sure they are attractive and functional for locals who rely on their services.
You’ll volunteer alongside a local coordinator making improvements and renovations to schools and community centers that need it most. Your days are split into a morning and afternoon shift, helping with repairs, making signs, painting, landscaping, gardening, cleaning and any other renovation tasks that are required.
If you’re someone who enjoys hands-on work, this project is perfect for you. You aren’t required to have previous experience with renovation work, however a reasonable level of fitness and strong work ethic will go a long way in ensuring you get the most out of your volunteer project.
Please note this project has a minimum duration of 2 weeks and incurs a surcharge of $$50 per week for extra supervision, materials and logistics. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.

Help to tackle Bali’s problem with litter by educating the next generation of students about proper waste disposal, and run clean up campaigns in the community.
Environmental Education in
Litter is a serious problem in Bali, and locals often throw their rubbish on the street when they’re finished with it. Food in Bali was traditionally wrapped in biodegradable banana leaves, but plastic waste in particular is now a common sight. Volunteers can play an important role in educating local children about protecting the environment and responsible practices.
You’ll be based in local primary schools, helping to run classes around recycling and getting into the community on clean up campaigns. It’s expected you’ll also spend an hour or two each day time preparing for the following day’s activities.
This project is well suited to volunteers with an interest in conservation and supporting the delivery of environmental education campaigns. Strong initiative is a must as you will need to have an idea of what you would like to teach and how your lessons will be implemented to engage a young audience. Being creative, dynamic and fun will go a long way in keeping the students engaged, as many students will have limited English skills.
Please note, many of the schools you’ll be based in are under resourced and, while basic materials can be provided, you will need to bring your own specialized resources if you require them. If you don’t actively plan a campaign, you will spend the majority of your time teaching English.
Project Highlights
What you need to know
- Volunteer in primary schools, educating students about conservation
- Take students on clean up campaigns around the community and encourage proper waste disposal
- Suitable for those who care about the environment and want to help to tackle the challenges of climate change
- Volunteer up to 5 hours per day

Help to bring basic health education to schools, teaching students about hygiene, good health practices and nutrition. There are also opportunities for qualified volunteers to run campaigns or clinics in the community.
Health Education in
Learning basic health practices at a young age can go a long way in supporting the long-term health of children. As a Health Education volunteer, you’ll play an active role in the promotion of better health and wellbeing among young people.
You’ll volunteer in local schools, actively teaching the importance of basic hygiene and general health. Topics can include brushing teeth correctly, washing hands, general body cleanliness and nutrition.
The project is well suited to volunteers with an interest in health and teaching basic hygiene techniques. Creativity is a must, as the children have limited English skills, so you need to be willing to adapt your approach to keep the students engaged in your lessons. You’ll also need to spend one to two hours each morning preparing for lessons in the afternoon.
Qualified doctors can also run health campaigns or check-up clinics in local villages. You’ll need to provide transcripts of your qualifications in advance, and should come prepared with an idea of what you want to focus on during your program. If it requires additional resources, you may also need to provide these yourself.
Project Highlights

Assist kindergarten teachers with casual English and other lessons for children aged between 4-6.
Kindergarten in
Few foreigners travel to the northern coast of Bali, meaning children growing up in towns like Lovina don’t come across as many fluent English speakers as those in other parts of the island. Exposure to English-speaking teachers in kindergartens is a great thing for these children, and your presence can make a big difference in helping them to learn basic phrases from a young age.
As a Kindergarten volunteer, you’ll assist a local teacher with general lessons and English understanding for students aged between 4-6 years old. Teaching is generally informal and comes through play and fun activities suited to children of preschool age.
This project is best suited to volunteers who genuinely love working with children and understand their behavior. Be prepared for a lot of noise, laughter and excitement.
The Kindergarten project runs for two hours each morning. Volunteers are encouraged to help out the Teaching project in the afternoon which runs for 2-3 hours. You can arrange this directly with the local team in Lovina while you’re there.
Please note, the Kindergarten project will be closed in June, July, August and December for the holidays.
Project Highlights
What you need to know
- Volunteer in kindergartens in and around Lovina
- Help with fun, informal English language lessons
- Volunteer alongside local teachers, with children aged 4-6

Assist local kindergarten teachers with both formal and informal English language lessons for 4-5 year olds, aiming to give them a head start with basic words and phrases.
Kindergarten in
Pre-school is increasingly being seen as a hugely important place for children to start their education and develop learning habits that can last a lifetime. By helping in kindergartens around Ubud, you’re able to give 4-5 year olds a valuable head start on their English education before they begin formal schooling.
You’ll be based in small villages around Ubud, assisting the local teacher in English lessons. Your authority as a fluent English speaker makes you a valuable resource, and you can help with both formal lessons and informal learning. You can also help with playtime and it’s expected you’ll spend some time each day preparing for the following day’s lessons.
If you’re someone who genuinely loves working with children and understands their behavior, this project will be well suited to you. The teaching environment is generally much more casual than in schools, due to the age of the children.
Volunteer hours are in the morning only, but if you’d like to join another project in the afternoon, that can be arranged once you arrive in Bali. Due to school holidays, the Kindergarten project will be closed in June, July, August and December.

Help to teach English in local elementary schools, volunteering with students aged between 8-12 years old. Take charge of a classroom by yourself or in pairs with another volunteer.
Teaching in
The ability to speak English is a tremendous asset in Bali, as greater English literacy leads to better opportunities for higher education and career prospects in growing industries such as tourism.
As a volunteer teacher, you will play a hands-on role in developing the English language skills of elementary students in Lovina. Balinese students are eager to practice their conversational English skills and learn from native speakers, as they understand the benefits that come from greater fluency.
You’ll teach at a local elementary school, working with students aged between 8-12 years old on after school classes. Lesson themes and teaching methods can vary and include games, songs, art, sport and music - the only limit is your own creativity! There is a general syllabus for you to follow and examples of what previous volunteers have taught can guide your lesson planning. It’s expected you’ll spend 1-2 hours preparing your lessons each day.
Confident volunteers can take charge of classrooms on their own, or you can choose to pair up with another volunteer and teach as a team.
You’ll be teaching in a relaxed environment that requires greater flexibility, as the number of students that attend can vary. Students may also attend religious ceremonies or other activities after school, and in these instances you may be required to volunteer on another placement for a short period.
As volunteers work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training in teaching English as a foreign language. Visit our Online TEFL Course](/online-tefl-course/) page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

Based on the island of Nusa Penida, help to conserve the population of endangered sea turtles. Assist with feeding and cleaning while you’re based off the beaten track, enjoying island life away from modern distractions.
Sea Turtle Conservation in
One of IVHQ’s most popular projects, this is an amazing chance to volunteer and help to protect endangered sea turtles around Bali. You’ll be based on the small island of Nusa Penida, using both proactive and reactive means to conserve the environment and help to increase the local turtle population.
If you’re someone who has an interest in wildlife, conservation efforts and likes being outdoors, this project is for you!
As a Turtle Conservation volunteer in Bali, you’ll have a hands-on role in caring for the turtles housed at a local conservation center. When volunteering with turtles, you’ll help with feeding and cleaning them, as well as cleaning equipment at the center. You’ll also assist with proactive conservation efforts on beach clean ups and helping to improve waste management.
Volunteers need to be prepared for a basic standard of meals and accommodation on the island. Nusa Penida is not a tourist island and there are fewer shops and attractions available - although the beach is practically at your doorstep!
Turtle Conservation volunteers must participate on the project for at least 2 weeks.
