Arts and Music in

Arts and music are a universal language that can bring people closer together regardless of their backgrounds. The Arts and Music project in Jordan works to help child refugees and children from other marginalized communities by using creative outlets to raise awareness of different social issues.

You’ll work alongside a team of local staff and fellow volunteers helping to run creative workshops which use art and music therapy as a means of empowering students to make positive changes in their own community and way of life. Themes can include diversity, gender equality, the pursuit of their dreams, deforestation, the impact of plastic on the world and climate change. By looking at universal issues, these lessons can also help students to understand their roles as global citizens in the world.

You’ll also help to promote a variety of important life skills such as creativity, confidence, communication, problem solving and team-work.

This project is well suited to creative volunteers with skills in art or music, who are also passionate about global issues and working with children. Many placements tend to have a stronger focus on art as opposed to music, though if you want to do more music-related activities, please note that on your application. It may be helpful to bring your own musical equipment with you in these instances, and please also be prepared to take part in art activities if required.

Ramadan in

Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and Muslims worldwide observe this as a month of fasting. While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims only eat and drink outside of daylight hours.

In Jordan, around 92% of the population are practicing Muslims. The Ramadan project provides a unique opportunity for volunteers to experience Ramadan in a Muslim culture, while helping provide Iftar meals to socially disadvantaged families and individuals in a community kitchen.

Ramadan volunteer in Jordan with IVHQ

The community kitchen you’ll be based in serves around 1,500 Iftar meals each day throughout Ramadan and provides a social place for people to break their daily fast with a warm meal. You’ll help to collect food, serve meals, organize activities, clean up and provide general support wherever it’s needed.

As a volunteer, you don’t need to be a practicing Muslim, however you are required to observe Ramadan customs. This project is only available during the four weeks of Ramadan. The timing of Ramadan is dependent on the moon, so changes each year, but in the next few years will fall between March-May. In 2020, Ramadan runs from April 23 to May 23.

Special Needs Support in

Social stigma still surrounds special needs in Jordan and with a lack of support, there are many families who are unable to properly care for family members who have mental and physical disabilities. Centers providing individualized care and education make a huge difference to the lives of people living with disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome.

As a Special Needs Support volunteer in Jordan you can help enrich the lives of these people by providing support in centers that are dedicated to improving their well-being and quality of life.

You’ll help a team of local staff and fellow volunteers to run educational lessons, games and activities such as arts and crafts, tapestry and woodwork for children and adults who attend the special needs centers each day. For those with relevant training or experience, you can also assist with treatment, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation.

This project is well suited to compassionate, patient and caring volunteers who have a strong interest in working with people with special needs. Previous experience with individuals with special needs is preferred, but because you’ll be working closely with the local placement staff, you don’t need to have any. If you want to be involved in physical therapy, then you should have appropriate training.

Teaching in

Many young people in Jordan grow up disadvantaged, but there are a range of support services that aim to help them through the different stages of their lives. As a teaching volunteer, the students you’ll help teach in Jordan have often been part of youth homes and come from challenging backgrounds. The next phase of the support they receive is a bridging education that enables them to look forward to the futures they can have.

You’ll work in learning centers with teenagers and young adults who want to further their education and integrate well into the job market. You can expect to tutor students one-on-one with a focus on teaching English, unless you can speak Arabic well enough to be able to teach other subjects. You’ll assist local staff to run intensive language classes and educational activities, provide tutoring for exams, help to develop resumes and applications for further study opportunities.

Teaching volunteer in Jordan with IVHQ

The Teaching project in Jordan provides an important educational platform for underprivileged young adults who need additional support to obtain their high school certificate or to work towards higher education and acceptance to university. Your assistance as a volunteer teacher in Jordan can make an incredible difference to the students involved in the project, as you help to open up further educational opportunities that can change the course of their lives.

As you’ll be volunteering with the support of IVHQ’s local team, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to participate in this project. However, we encourage you to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

Women's Education in

Many women in Jordan experience poverty, illiteracy and unemployment. In turn, this impacts their children. In an effort to combat the issues these women face, a range of initiatives have been established to improve their access to education and skills training and promoting income-generating activities.

As a Women’s Education volunteer in Jordan, you’ll be based in local centers for women and girls that aim to improve their education and provide them with professional development opportunities that help them to become self-sufficient. Jordanian culture is centered around food, and a core focus is teaching the women how to cook on a commercial scale as a means to generate income and support their families.

You can also help to teach art and handicraft-making, embroidery and fashion design and computer skills. Your specific tasks will depend on your program duration - longer term volunteers and volunteers who can communicate in Arabic will have more opportunities to help in more involved activities.

This project is well suited to volunteers who are passionate about women’s empowerment and who also have skills in food preparation, arts and crafts and small business promotion. Volunteers who don’t speak Arabic should expect a significant language barrier and come prepared with creative ways to overcome this. Due to cultural sensitivities in Jordan, this project is only available to female volunteers.

Youth Support in

Many young people in Jordan face challenges growing up, and by working with them volunteers can help to raise their expectations of themselves and open up new possibilities for their future. The Youth Support project in Jordan provides an important and exciting developmental platform for these often underprivileged young people who need educational support and assistance with social and interpersonal skills.

As a Youth Support volunteer, you’ll be based in after school centers and act as a positive role model for young people aged between 6-18 years old. You can do anything from assisting with homework, supporting and encouraging studies in English, helping with arts and crafts activities, sports or any general work that needs to be done at the center. Your specific task will depend on the needs of the center at the time of your visit, but you’ll be volunteering alongside local staff, who can guide you.

Youth Support volunteer in Jordan with IVHQ

A large focus of this project is to teach English in an informal way, by interacting with the young people at the center to improve their oral and written English language skills, which is often one of their biggest difficulties.

However, your main objective is to provide much-needed after school support. International volunteers are seen as an important part of the overall nurturing of young people as you’ll bring new perspectives and creativity to the centers, which can only benefit the people it aims to help.

This project is well suited to volunteers who are passionate about working with young people to support their education and helping them to develop their interests and life ambitions. These center can lack structure and organization at times, which requires volunteers to be adaptable and use their initiative and enthusiasm to be as effective as possible in their placements.
