Many young people in Jordan face challenges growing up, and by working with them volunteers can help to raise their expectations of themselves and open up new possibilities for their future. The Youth Support project in Jordan provides an important and exciting developmental platform for these often underprivileged young people who need educational support and assistance with social and interpersonal skills.
As a Youth Support volunteer, you’ll be based in after school centers and act as a positive role model for young people aged between 6-18 years old. You can do anything from assisting with homework, supporting and encouraging studies in English, helping with arts and crafts activities, sports or any general work that needs to be done at the center. Your specific task will depend on the needs of the center at the time of your visit, but you’ll be volunteering alongside local staff, who can guide you.
A large focus of this project is to teach English in an informal way, by interacting with the young people at the center to improve their oral and written English language skills, which is often one of their biggest difficulties.
However, your main objective is to provide much-needed after school support. International volunteers are seen as an important part of the overall nurturing of young people as you’ll bring new perspectives and creativity to the centers, which can only benefit the people it aims to help.
This project is well suited to volunteers who are passionate about working with young people to support their education and helping them to develop their interests and life ambitions. These center can lack structure and organization at times, which requires volunteers to be adaptable and use their initiative and enthusiasm to be as effective as possible in their placements.
