Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and Muslims worldwide observe this as a month of fasting. While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims only eat and drink outside of daylight hours.
In Jordan, around 92% of the population are practicing Muslims. The Ramadan project provides a unique opportunity for volunteers to experience Ramadan in a Muslim culture, while helping provide Iftar meals to socially disadvantaged families and individuals in a community kitchen.
The community kitchen you’ll be based in serves around 1,500 Iftar meals each day throughout Ramadan and provides a social place for people to break their daily fast with a warm meal. You’ll help to collect food, serve meals, organize activities, clean up and provide general support wherever it’s needed.
As a volunteer, you don’t need to be a practicing Muslim, however you are required to observe Ramadan customs. This project is only available during the four weeks of Ramadan. The timing of Ramadan is dependent on the moon, so changes each year, but in the next few years will fall between March to May. In 2021, Ramadan runs from April 12th to May 11th.
