I have way too many favorite moments from my volunteering experience in Morocco to put into words. From the times I spent with my students in class to the time I spent with them outside of class and the time I spent with the staff and the adventures I experienced on weekends, volunteering with IVHQ in Morocco was my favorite moment. I made connections with people that will last a lifetime.

Amazigh Immersion in

The Atlas Mountains are a stunning natural range in North Africa, and home to the indigenous Amazigh (or Berber) community. They live a traditional life based around working the land, and are responsible for much of the popular art, crafts and music that Morocco is famous for. Volunteers get a rare immersive cultural experience, living in a village in the mountains and helping with all aspects of daily life.

You’ll be placed in rural villages in the Atlas Mountains, helping in community centres with teaching English, childcare, agriculture and women’s education.

Amazigh Immersion volunteer in Morocco with IVHQ

Your English classes will be open to locals of all ages, helping with their cultural appreciation and greatly improving their chances of finding work elsewhere.

Many agricultural tasks benefit from volunteer assistance, and you can help with feeding animals, managing offspring, milking and animal husbandry, as well as horticultural jobs including ploughing, seeding, weeding and harvesting crops.

This project is well suited to volunteers who want to get out of their comfort zone, experience a new culture and be immersed in a new way of life.

Please note this placement is located approximately two hours from Marrakech, so volunteers can expect the villages to be very remote and have extremely basic facilities. The majority of the villagers also don’t speak English, so you’ll need to be creative in finding ways to communicate.

By providing productive and stimulating environments for children at a young age, their brains can grow and develop in a way that will continue to benefit them for years to come. These kinds of daycares are rare in underprivileged Moroccan communities, but volunteers can make a real difference by helping busy local staff to inspire and excite young children.

Childcare projects in Morocco perform an important, two-sided role in society. They provide a supported developmental and growth environment for young children, and they allow parents to go to work, knowing their children are being well cared for. In disadvantaged neighborhoods, this is an important service that enabled families to be productive.

Teaching English in

Although the Moroccan government is working hard to improve literacy and promote professional development, a large percentage of Moroccan children and teenagers aren’t given the chance to acquire valuable second language skills. It’s well known that speaking a second language will enable students to further their education and integrate them well into the job market, but accessing opportunities to learn these languages is not easy.

You’ll be placed in community centres that provide free or very low cost language classes to local children, teenagers and adults. These centres often lack structure and organisation, so you’ll need to be adaptable and use your initiative to be effective. Volunteers assist the staff by running language classes, providing tutoring, organising games and activities, and helping with homework and exams. You’ll often be running classes in tandem with another international volunteer.

Volunteers are also able to teach French, which is a popular second language in Morocco. If you can speak French and English, and are willing to volunteer teaching both languages, please include that in your application.

The nature of project work is essentially the same as our Teaching English project on the Morocco program. This project is better suited to volunteers who want to be based closer to the Sahara desert, in a smaller city that is more popular with other tourists and known as Morocco’s cultural hub.

As volunteers work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to participate. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognised TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

Many women in Morocco suffer from poverty, illiteracy and unemployment, affecting their social standing and, in turn, their children’s education. Since a national directive in 2005, the Moroccan government has been working hard to improve women’s education and health, and is eager to promote income-generating activities for women. However, volunteers are still required to help to deliver these goals.

As a Women’s Education volunteer, you’ll focus primarily on teaching English, and sometimes French. Learning English is a skill that gives local women immense confidence and helps them to get jobs in industries like tourism.
