After School Care in

In areas of Naples, local children often spend their free time on the streets, without any adult supervision or opportunities for constructive activities. As a volunteer on the After School Care project in Italy, you’ll provide care and the chance to build on their education with after school activities.

Volunteers help to organise and run after school workshops and educational activities, incorporating music, art, cooking, sports, games and leisure activities. While some basic resources are available, you’ll need to use your initiative and creativity to arrange activities - if you’re able to bring your own resources, it’ll make things much easier.

After school care volunteer in Naples with IVHQ

This project is well suited to volunteers who enjoy working with children and supporting youth development outside the classroom. Strong organisational skills and the ability to improvise will be highly valuable on this project, as providing care to children in an unstructured environment can be challenging. However, the children are incredibly enthusiastic and grateful for the opportunity to learn from international volunteers.

As the project runs in the afternoon, you will have mornings free to plan for the day’s work. You will be volunteering alongside our local placement staff so you don’t need to be qualified or have teaching experience to join this project. Many students are new to learning English, so you should expect a language barrier at times. You’re welcome to take advantage of Italian language lessons offered by your local team, which will help you to communicate.

Please note that if you apply for the After School Care project during the school holidays (June - September), you’ll spend your time helping on a holiday camp.

    Creative Technologies in

This is a high-impact volunteer project where volunteers with technical-digital skills can make a difference in supporting causes which NGOs in Rome are fighting for. These include, but are not limited to; social inclusion, anti-racism, animal protection and environmental conservation. For many of these NGOs communication is the key to obtaining donations, raising awareness, and making local citizens more active in these causes.

As a volunteer with experience in the digital and marketing sector, you can help these NGOs increase their reach and exposure, develop websites, design marketing material, capture film and video of their activities and create social media campaigns. This is all done while also expanding your own portfolio and learning more about the social and environmental issues facing Rome.

Creative Technologies Volunteering in Rome, Italy with IVHQ.

Volunteers with a range of skills can assist on the Creative Technologies project:

    • Experienced website developers can help create or update websites incorporating relevant content and media to support charitable initiatives
    • Graphic designers can help to create a range of marketing materials - such as flyers, print advertisements, website content, social media posts or logos and e-books
    • Volunteers with experience in videography or film can create promotional videos or documentaries
    • Photography lovers can help NGOs in documenting their activities, creating catalogues, and providing images for social media and marketing material

If you have a preference in regards to the type of NGO you would like to work with, please note this in your application when you apply and we will do our best to match you to that focus area. These NGOs generally won’t have an abundance of resources available, so volunteers need to provide their own laptops, design software (Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent) and/or camera equipment in order to participate on this project. Volunteers will be required to have prior skills, so please ensure you include all relevant qualifications and/or experience in your application.

      Environmental in

Naples is home to many historical and UNESCO World Heritage sites, but they need regular maintenance and attention to be in their best condition. It’s important they are properly conserved for both historical value and to help to stimulate the natural economy by attracting visitors, and volunteers play a significant role in enabling this to be done properly.

As an Environmental volunteer, you’ll be placed with a local Environmental NGO, helping with a range of tasks including the preservation of archaeological ruins or protected marine life, farming and bio-construction as well as supporting the NGO with administration, organising and running community workshops, conferences, outreaches and research.

Your exact tasks will vary depending on the specific NGO you’re assisting, but can include cleaning monuments, protecting restricted areas of national parks, event planning, litter collection, helping with administration and farming. Please note, all volunteer work is dependent on the weather. If the weather requires work to be cancelled, you can either have a free day or help out on another project.

To participate on this project, you must be 18 or older and able to commit to a minimum duration of 3 weeks. Please include your skills and motivations for volunteering in your application so that our local team can arrange a suitable placement for you. Inclusive Agriculture in

The Inclusive Agriculture project gives volunteers an opportunity to experience a piece of the Rome countryside while supporting a social integration model and assisting with a range of seasonal tasks. The goal of this project is to maximize production and help with the care of vegetables and aromatic plants in the garden while also empowering the acquisition of professional skills for asylum seekers working with you.

As a volunteer you’ll be working in one of Rome’s historic parks, helping cultivate the vegetable garden, the nursery built inside it, the botanical collection of Mediterranean plants, the urban garden and the laboratory of manufacturing and craft activities, and so much more. This is a hands-on project based on multiculturalism, sustainability and ecology, where you’ll be working in the field often side by side with migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, as well as with people with mental and motor disabilities, the elderly and even with children.

Inclusive Agriculture Volunteering in Rome, Italy with IVHQ.

This project is suited to hands-on volunteers who care about functional, sustainable and ecological solutions applied to models of social inclusion. Volunteer activities range according to the season and current tasks but you can expect a range of the following:

        • Cultivating and harvesting vegetables and legumes in the large garden
        • Craft workshop activities creating objects of various designs using waste or recyclable materials

The profits resulting from these activities (when present) go the projects in which the refugees are involved, as well as to other local non-profits associations involved in supporting social issues.

As your tasks will vary based on the season, you should be open to helping out in whatever kind of activity is prioritized while you’re there. This project has a minimum duration requirement of two weeks.

          Teaching English in

Naples has a high student drop-out rate, with many young people choosing to leave school early in favour of finding work on the streets. Volunteers can make a big difference to make education appealing and valuable to students who may otherwise leave school.

Volunteer English teachers either assist local teachers during the day at a public school, or work on an after school program, organising activities and workshops to help students aged between 6-18 improve their English language. Here, you’ll either assist a local teacher or host classes in pairs with another volunteer.

In both cases, you should expect most students to be new to learning English. Your lessons will generally be teaching the basics of the language, and you’ll have a local curriculum to help guide your lesson planning in this regard. You may also want to take advantage of the Italian language lessons offered by our local team to help you communicate with students.

Teaching English volunteer Italy, Naples with IVHQ

This project is well suited to volunteers who are passionate about working with young learners to help improve their English language skills, while also developing their interests and life ambitions.

As you will be volunteering alongside our local team and placement staff, you don’t need to have teaching experience to participate. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course to learn how to gain an internationally-recognised TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

Please note that if you apply for the Teaching English project during the summer holidays (June-September), you will be switched to a special summer camp project. During this time, you’ll provide support in creating opportunities for children, some of whom are recent migrants to Naples, to learn English.

You can expect to assist with activities including sports and the arts, playing games, accompanying the children on visits to cultural sites and helping them with their English. Most activities take place outdoors, rather than a classroom.

            Teaching English in

Within Italy there are several communities that, due to poor education and economic resources, do not have access to or a correct approach to the study of English. This often leads to a lack of opportunities for those born into poorer neighbourhoods. The Teaching English project provides access to language lessons for a variety of different people, including children, youth, adults and the elderly.

As a Teaching English volunteer, you can expect to work within a local NGO providing access to education for these groups. You will help with structuring the education programming according to the needs of the individuals who attend as well as the objectives of the NGO you are going to support. You should plan to lead lessons and educational activities for students who range in ability. English is by far the most common language being taught but if you are fluent in another language, and there is interest from locals to learn it, you may also be able to teach that.

Teaching English Volunteering in Rome, Italy with IVHQ.

Depending on the students you are assigned, the focus of your lessons will change:

            • With children and youth, you can alternate theoretical lessons with recreational and/or sports activities in English
            • With adults, you will focus on vocabulary to assist in a certain sector such as tourism, administration, health, and more, depending on their professional or personal needs
            • With the elderly, you can have fun teaching them basic vocabulary and creating handcraft activities or other projects that make them feel active, loved, and useful in their community

This project is well suited to aspiring teachers who would like to extend their teaching skills abroad as well as any volunteers interested in a cultural exchange that involves teaching language to those in need. As you will be volunteering with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you do not need to be a qualified or experienced teacher to participate on this project.
