This was my third time to Guatemala, and I absolutely love it there! Guatemala itself is a beautiful place to be, but it's truly the people you meet in Guatemala that enrich your experience! I have never met such grateful, appreciative kids, and there's no way anyone could leave them without wanting to return. The local team are fantastic and offer great opportunities to learn Spanish and make the most out of your time in Guatemala in many ways.

Animal Care in

Across Latin America, animals are not often looked upon as integral members of the family, as they are in more developed countries. This often leads to animals being neglected or abandoned, where their chances of becoming injured or ill are very high.

By volunteering with animals in a range of placements, you can help to match the high demand for assistance. Placements include a dog and cat shelter, a veterinary clinic and an exotic animal refuge, catering to crocodiles, snakes, lizards and turtles.

You can expect to help with cleaning cages, bathing or brushing animals, helping with obedience training and veterinary care, walking and playing with the animals or small construction tasks, functional structures at the animal care facilities. We recommend stating a preference for the type of placement you wish to volunteer in, but we cannot guarantee preferences as volunteers are ultimately placed where their help is most needed.

This project is open to all volunteers and a veterinary background is not required, although is highly advantageous.

Eco-Agriculture in

This is a rare opportunity to contribute to some of Guatemala’s leading industries while spending time immersed in rural communities. You can be based in either a coffee or macadamia nut farming community at the base of the stunning Guatemalan Highlands working on sustainable volunteering projects to benefit locals.

The coffee co-operative that volunteers work with focuses on economic development and sustainable agriculture. Local farmers work their own land, producing organic coffee that is shade grown, hand processed and sun dried. The high coffee harvesting season is from December until early March, but there is plenty of work to do all year round.

The local organisation planting macadamia trees seeks to address climate change, assist communities with self-sustaining agriculture and educate the public about the environment. By planting trees, they’re able to introduce Macadamia seedlings to communities as an alternative to slash and burn agriculture.

At both volunteer placements, you’ll work side by side with farmers, providing support in every step of the growing process.

Volunteers at the coffee plantation help in the nursery, with coffee picking, harvesting, weeding, planting shade trees and even packaging of the final product. You can also help with community outreach and restoration efforts.

We recommend stating a preference for the placement you wish to work in, but we cannot guarantee preferences as volunteers are ultimately placed where their help is most needed.

As you will be volunteering alongside the local families, you do not need to have experience in coffee/nut production or farming to participate.

It’s well suited to active volunteers who enjoy immersive experiences.

Working with the Elderly in

Elderly people from low-income families in Guatemala often rely on local service organisations for their basic needs. Many of these organisations are underfunded, and by volunteering to help elderly people you provide a great source of support.

The aim of this project is to help create a compassionate and friendly atmosphere for the elderly. On your elderly volunteer project, you’ll help nursing homes and senior centers by providing one-on-one attention, basic healthcare and socialising with senior citizens. You can also organise recreational activities or assist with medicine distribution, meal preparation or even exercise programs and arts and crafts projects.
