Childcare centers are active and fun places where children first get exposure to formal education and structured play with others their own age. Run well, they can help to develop young brains and foster an appetite for later learning. Many centers around Kathmandu are seeking volunteer assistance in order to better provide this nurturing environment.

Volunteers assist in centers in different areas in Kathmandu, including both in the city and in the surrounding hills.

The tourist city of Pokhara is popular with travelers to Nepal and has been well supported by past Childcare volunteers. This means childcare centers are well funded and set up, which enables volunteers to continue to make a difference in an organised environment.

Volunteers should expect to be focusing on sustaining these rejuvenated placements, rather than implementing and funding new initiatives. The Childcare project in Pokhara offers volunteers a platform to contribute your enthusiasm and creativity in order to brighten up the days of the children and advance their English language skills by engaging them in fun and educational activities.

You’re encouraged to arrive with your own initiatives and ideas of activities to arrange for the children. We encourage volunteers to not be afraid to get involved in the day-to-day running of these placements.

Volunteers who want additional work outside the childcare center also have the option to take part in nearby before and after school classes with local children. The Childcare project in Pokhara is perfect for first time volunteers or for those who have not worked within a Childcare center before.

Medical Elective in

The contrast between medical practices in the western world and those in developing countries can be stark, and this is a real opportunity to understand and contribute to the realities of modern medicine in an under-resourced environment.

Volunteers are placed in hospitals in Kathmandu, Chitwan or Pokhara, where you shadow and assist local physicians and nurses. It’s possible for volunteers to get good exposure to a range of different medical departments, but as local regulations prevent volunteers from performing independent tasks, you should not expect to be carrying out hands-on medical duties. For this reason, this project is best suited to medical students.

Medical Elective volunteer in Nepal with IVHQ

Volunteers are able to observe operating rooms and assist with physical therapy, burns patients, emergency room rounds, family planning sessions, immunizations and helping new mothers and babies.

Experienced and longer term volunteers (i.e. two months or more) are more likely to be able to assist with hands-on tasks, and can also help with healthcare and outreach campaigns in rural health clinics

This project is open to volunteers who are in their third year of medical or nursing school or above. You will need to present a copy of your qualification to our local team at least 30 days prior to your arrival.

Please note there is a minimum duration requirement of 2 weeks for this project and there is also a surcharge of US$60 (approximately AU$90) per week to cover training and resources used. This will be included in the program fee quoted to you when you apply. Please ensure that you apply for the Medical Elective project at least six weeks before your chosen start date, to provide enough time to arrange a suitable placement.

NGO Support in

In Nepal, NGOs play an important role in the development of the country and improving the quality of life for locals. However, many are in need of volunteer assistance, meaning there are plenty of opportunities to assist under-resourced organizations. Your volunteering can help these worthy initiatives to achieve both the long-term development goals of Nepal and important fundraising goals that directly support the immediate community.

These small, local NGO’s operate in areas including youth and women’s empowerment, education, environment & conservation, public health, management & administration and journalism. Hard-working, independent volunteers who have relevant skills and experience are well suited to this project.

NGO Support volunteer in Nepal with IVHQ

Your tasks can include administrative work, monthly/annual reporting or working in communities to support the initiatives of the NGO you’re placed in. You can expect to work between four - eight hours per day, where your tasks will depend on your individual skills and interests, as well as your program duration.

The NGO Support project is open to all volunteers who have an interest in international relations, social work, development studies, social issues or those who want to learn about project management. A basic knowledge of how non-profit organisations operate is preferred and this understanding will help you maximize your time in Nepal.

Your placement will be decided based on your skills and interests, as well as the needs in Nepal at the time. You will need to be flexible and understand the workload and type of work will vary depending on the time of year and the exact placement you volunteer at.

This project has a minimum duration requirement of 4 weeks to give you enough time to understand the needs of the NGO you’re assisting and maximize your contribution as a volunteer. You need to register no later than four weeks prior to your start date to allow the local team time to arrange your volunteer placement.

Agriculture is the single largest employer in Nepal, providing livelihoods for nearly 70 percent of the population. However, many local farmers struggle to make a profit and produce an adequate supply of food for their communities.

As a volunteer on the Sustainable Agriculture project, you’ll provide support to small-scale local farmers, helping to improve livelihoods for farming communities and implementing more resilient practices.

You can expect to be involved in tasks such as clearing land, cultivating and harvesting crops, caring for and moving livestock, and general farm maintenance. If you’re someone who loves the outdoors and you’re looking for hands-on volunteer work, this is a great project for you.

For those with prior knowledge or experience, there is also scope to introduce new ideas on how to manage farms from a business standpoint, with the aim of providing support to increase their financial security.

Teaching English in

The majority of Nepali children do not have access to a good standard of education. This is due to the lack of financial and physical resources in Nepal, as well as the remote mountain geography of the country.

Volunteers on the Teaching English project teach English in public or private schools in Nepal, depending on the need for volunteers at the time of placement. Students generally have a good grasp of English already, and are eager to learn more and enhance their later job prospects.

Teaching volunteer in Nepal with IVHQ

Volunteers on this project can assist in creating low-cost teaching materials for the schools and help organize health checkups for students. You can also be involved in organizing other school activities, such as sports or sanitation programs.

It’s important to be aware that volunteers may be required to teach other subjects including math, science and social studies. As volunteers work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, they do not need to be qualified or experienced teachers to participate. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognised TEFL certification at a discounted rate.
