Essential Insights:
  • Expect the Unexpected: Unforeseen factors like weather, road conditions, and fellow trekkers' health may affect the trek's duration. We recommend adding 1-2 extra days to ensure a smooth transition to your international flight home. Note that this trek is not advisable from January to mid-February due to weather conditions.
  • Accommodation: Anticipate staying in locally run lodges known as tea houses, featuring simple furnishings, shared rooms and shared bathrooms. Your support enhances the local economy in the Annapurna Region.
  • Meals: Relish a "teahouse trek" experience with a range of dining options in the villages. Breakfast and dinner are typically enjoyed at the same lodge where you spend the night, offering diverse culinary choices.
  • Fitness Requirements: The trek features steep ascents and descents + altitude gain that occurs quite quickly, demanding a good level of fitness. The daily walking time varies based on the group's fitness and weather conditions; so this trek is not recommended for older travellers or those with concerns about altitude adjustment.
  • Footwear and Clothing: Equip yourself with well-broken-in hiking shoes suitable for snow and waterproof. Additionally, bring comfortable clothing, including a windproof jacket. It is recommended that volunteers bring their own trekking equipment, but the Local Team can provide a down jacket, sleeping bag, walking poles and a backpack if required.
  • Travel insurance - Recognize that high-altitude trekking poses risks. Standard travel insurance packages often exclude high-altitude activities. Ensure your coverage includes altitude-related illnesses, including helicopter rescues, as you will be at an approx. altitude of 4130m.  
  • Timing - If you choose to join this program prior to your volunteer program beginning, you will need to arrive a week before your program start date (on the Sunday), just to ensure the things mentioned in the 'Expect the unexpected' section above don't affect the start of your volunteer program. If you do finish the trek earlier, then you would need to book extra nights of accommodation and the local team will help arrange these. 
  • SIM - Ncell SIM card has coverage up to Deurali, while NTC SIM card covers areas above that. 
  • Tips: Plan for a minimum US$100 tip for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, payable to your guides on-site.

Your Responsibilities:

Embark on a transformative journey through the breathtaking Himalayas with our 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek. This iconic expedition isn't just a trek; it's an opportunity to challenge yourself, immerse in Sherpa culture, and witness awe-inspiring vistas that will leave you speechless.

In addition to completing the mighty journey to Everest Base Camp, you will visit an ancient monastery in Tengboche, and enjoy stunning views of Mt Lhotse, Mt Makalu, and Cho Yo. Amidst all the rugged mountains vistas, you will also see the Khumbu Glacier and ascend the famous Kala Pathar for a close, unobstructed view of Mt Everest.

This trek begins on the first and third Sunday of each month; however, if you are looking to join outside of this time, please let your IVHQ Program Manager know and they will be happy to check availability for you.

Day 1: Arriving at The Capital – Kathmandu (1400 m), where you will spend the night in a local hotel
Day 2: Fly to Lukla (2860 m) and Trek to Phakding (2610m) Trek duration 3-3.5 hours
Day 3: Phakding to Namche Bazar (3440 m) Trek duration 5.5 hours
Day 4: Acclimatization at Namche Bazar
Day 5: Trek to Tengboche (3860 m) Trek duration: 5-6 hours
Day 6: Trek to Dingboche (4350 m) Trek duration: 5 hours
Day 7: Acclimatization at Dingboche
Day 8: Trek to Lobuche (4910 m) Trek duration: 5 – 5.5 hours

Important things to note:


Price - The price is quoted for 7 or more volunteers taking part on the tour. If there are fewer volunteers taking part on the tour, the cost will be higher. Any difference (between $20 and $290) will need to be paid directly to the local team in-country before starting the tour. You will be notified at your program orientation if there is any extra amount to be paid. Your Program Manager can provide more information on the potential cost based on numbers of volunteers participating.

Expect the unexpected - The weather and health of fellow trekking members can impact the number of days it takes to complete the trek, therefore we recommend allocating 1-2 days extra to ensure you will make your international flight home. January & February can be very cold. 

Accommodation - You can expect to stay in local run lodges known as tea houses which are simply furnished with a bed and occasionally a small table. Bathrooms are typically shared and are in a separate area of the teahouse or in some tea houses will be outside. Staying in a teahouse is a great way to support these local businesses and boost the local economy in the Everest Region. You will need to bring a sleeping bag with you. 

Meals - You will be doing “teahouse trek,” meaning there are villages with lodges and restaurants to eat and stay in along the entire route. You are expected to eat breakfast and dinner in the same lodge where you are spending the night. Typical food available for lunch and dinner is Nepali rice and lentils, pasta, potato dishes, soups or pizzas. Delicious pancakes, porridge, toast and eggs are the main breakfast fare, while tea, coffee and hot chocolate are always available. You will probably be pleasantly surprised at the variety of food at the lodges.

Level of fitness required - There are a lot of steep ascents and descents on the trek and a good level of fitness is required. Some days you may be required to walk up to seven hours. Please note that the estimated walking time each day will vary according to the overall fitness of the group and weather conditions.

Packing list - Bring well broken-in hiking shoes that are suitable for snow, thick socks, light socks, camp shoes (e.g. flip flops or sandals), down or fibre filled waterproof jacket and pants, sweater or fleece jacket, underwear, warm and cotton or polypropylene pants or jeans, shirts and T-shirts, shorts, wool hat, sun hat/cap, gloves, bathing suit, comfortable track/gym suit, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50), elastic knee brace, ear plugs, wallet, books or kindle, head torch, basic first aid kit and personal medication, extra batteries for camera and gadgets, cables and chargers, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitizer, etc.).

Travel insurance - Although the itinerary has been made accordingly so that the trekker's body slowly gets used to the altitude, it is important to note that you will be at the altitude of approximately 5545m at the base camp. The risks of trekking at a high altitude are significant; therefore, it is essential to note that most standard travel insurance packages do not include high-altitude trekking. As such, please be aware of the approximate altitude of 5545m when obtaining travel insurance, as you will need to ensure you are covered for all altitude related illnesses (including helicopter rescues).

Tips - There is generally a minimum US$250 tip required for the Everest Base Camp Trek and this will be paid to the relevant guide/s once in-country. 

Cancellation - It is worth noting that any cancellations within 14 days of your start date for the Everest Base Camp Trek may incur a cancellation fee.

Day 2: Delhi/Āgra. Enjoy a youth-led walk through the backstreets of Delhi with 'City Walk'. Observe a different perspective of Delhi while supporting at-risk youth in the community. Later, explore Old Delhi and travel onward to Āgra, home of the Taj Mahal.

  • City Walk: Explore the streets of Delhi with a youth-led tour guide from the City Walk project. As a former at-risk youth, your local guide will have a unique perspective on the city and can provide more information on the life of a child in India. The guided tour helps support the guide's college or university tuition.
  • Old Delhi Guided Walk: Visit historic Old Delhi. Explore Jama Masjid, the "Great Mosque," and enjoy its massive courtyard, which can hold up to 25,000 worshippers. Also, visit the ancient Sikh temple of Gurdwara SisGanj, which was established in 1783.
  • Private Vehicle: Delhi - Āgra, 4 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

Day 3: Āgra. Set eyes on the sparkling Taj Mahal at sunrise before exploring more of this famous landmark. In the afternoon, visit the I'timad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj) and the Agra Fort.

  • Taj Mahal Visit: Cross one off your bucket list as you visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Explore the gorgeous white marble mausoleum, built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a testament of his love for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
  • Baby Taj Visit: Visit this mausoleum that looks like a jewel box, built before the Taj Mahal by Queen Nur Jahan for her father. Enjoy the intricate details of the structure; it was the first Mughal building faced with white marble and where "pietra dura" (precious stones inlaid into marble) was first used.
  • Āgra Fort Visit: Enjoy a visit to this impressive Mughal fort made of red sandstone and white marble.

Day 4: Āgra/Dhula Village. Stop at Fatehpur Sikri, the now-deserted former capital of the Mughals, and a stunningly preserved UNESCO site. Visit the Abhaneri Stepwell and marvel at this uniquely Indian water harvesting system. In the afternoon, travel to Dhula Village and get a closer look at rural life in Rajasthan. Tonight, settle in to your cozy tent then opt to relax by the fire and take in the starry night sky.

  • Private Vehicle: Āgra - Dhula Village, 5 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Fatehpur Sikri Visit: Explore the magnificent red sandstone fort city that was once the capital of India's Mughal Empire and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Keep an eye out for elements of different religions, as King Akbar built three palaces for each of his favourite wives—a Hindu, a Muslim, and a Christian—in the city.
  • Abhaneri Stepwell Visit: Walk around the amazing Chand Baori, a tenth century water tank that's an impressive 30m (100 ft) deep. Learn about ancient Indian environmentalism—a "baori" is a unique Indian invention for harvesting rainwater.
  • Dhula Village Experience: Get a closer look at village life with a stay in rural Dhula. Enjoy opportunities to interact and explore that may include meeting shepherds and their flocks, cycling through hamlets, tea with villagers at the local temple, trekking in the hillocks.

Day 5: Dhula Village/Jaipur. Continue to the pink city of Jaipur. Along the way, try your hand at block printing with the women of the Anoothi Project before arriving at your hotel. Built according to Hindu architectural principles, Jaipur utilizes a unique organization unlike anywhere else in India.

  • Private Vehicle: Dhula Village - Jaipur, 2 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Jaipur Orientation Tour: Enjoy an orientation of the Pink City by foot, with a short e-rickshaw ride in the walled city.
  • Anoothi Block Printing Experience: Women from marginalised communities outside Jaipur came together to create the Anoothi Project. In Hindi, Anoothi means 'unique and extraordinary' and by teaching these women to master the traditionally male handicraft of block printing, the collective shines a light on the unique and extraordinary within each individual. At this visit, engage in a hands-on block printing activity with the local women as you indulge in some local snacks prepared by your hosts

Day 6: Jaipur. Enjoy a visit to the Amber Fort, famous for its mixture of Hindu and Muslim architecture. After, visit the City Palace and have a photo opportunity at Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds).

Today's activities:
  • Amber Fort Visit: Take in the Hindu and Muslim architecture of the beautiful Amber Fort. Wander through the halls and courtyards and admire the intricate details.
  • City Palace Visit: Explore the courtyards, gardens, and buildings that make up the City Palace. Located in the heart of the Old City, it is a striking blend of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture. Visit the palace's museum to look at ancient carriages and the former maharaja's gold-embroidered wedding outfit.

Day 7: Jaipur/Delhi. If you aren't afraid of heights, opt for a morning hot air balloon ride over Jaipur. Return to Delhi in the afternoon and enjoy free time to explore more of the bustling city.

Day 8: Delhi/Kathmandu. Catch a flight from Delhi to Kathmandu today where you will enjoy free time in the city before a walk with the group in Patan Durbar Square.

  • Plane: Delhi - Kathmandu, 2 hours. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... yup, it is a plane, actually.
  • Free Time: Free time in Kathmandu to get to know the capital city of Nepal.
  • Patan Durbar Square Tour: Enjoy a guided tour of this spectacular square built primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries. Located within it are the Royal Palace and many temples built in the traditional Newari pagoda style. We also visit the Golden Temple and Patan museum. South of the square lies the Kumari Chowk, home to Nepal's living goddess, the Kumari, a prepubescent girl chosen as the incarnation of the Hindu goddess Talejn. The Kumari lives a cloistered life, rarely leaving the confines of the chowk. When she does, it is for important religious festivals, but her feet are not allowed to touch the ground. Once the Kumari reaches puberty, another 3-5-year-old girl will take her place. If she is receiving visitors, we may be able to stop by for a blessing.

Day 9: Kathmandu. Take a guided tour of the royal city of Bhaktapur and visit the most ancient shrine in Kathmandu, Swayambhunath Temple. Enjoy a cooking demonstration and learn how to make Nepalese momos (dumplings). Afterwards, taste the delicious dishes made during an authentic local lunch. The evening is free to do as you please.

Today's activities:
  • Bhaktapur Excursion: Visit this unique old town known as the City of Devotees. Explore Hindu temples, pagodas, palaces, and monuments, including the beautiful wood-carved palace in Durbar Square. You can pick up clay pots and other souvenirs in the colourful open markets and taste home made yogurt, known as khopa dhau, which Bhaktapur is famous for.
  • Nepalese Dumplings Cooking Demonstration: Enjoy a cooking demonstration at a local establishment and learn how to make momos (traditional dumplings). Afterwards, taste the delicious dishes made during a Nepali lunch.
  • Swayambhunath Temple Visit: Visit Swayambhunath Buddhist temple and Unesco World Heritage Site, the most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy shrines in Kathmandu. Explore the structure and be sure to check out the Buddha's eyes painted on each side of the Stupa. The site is also known as the monkey temple, for the vast amount of creatures who call the complex home.

Day 10: Kathmandu/Pokhara. Drive across the mountains to beautiful Pokhara. Immerse yourself in the views of the spectacular Annapurna Range. Upon arrival set out on an orientation walk along Phewa Lake.

  • Pokhara Orientation Walk: Breathe in the fresh air and take in the views of the Himalayas and Phewa Lake while getting your bearings around this scenic city.

Day 11: Pokhara. Spend the day as you please, indulging in a variety of optional activities in Pokhara. Find a cute cafe to sip some tea in or maybe go for a short hike in the Annapurna ranges. You could also walk up to Sarangkot for incredible views or spend time boating in Phewa lake and walk through the gardens.

  • Free Time: Enjoy Pokhara today. Hike in the foothills of the Annapurna Range or take a stroll through the lakeside market of Pokhara.

Day 12: Pokhara to Chitwan National Park. Leave Pokhara behind and transfer by private vehicle to Chitwan. Upon arrival enjoy a welcome by the Chitwan Community Guesthouse. Travel to this UNESCO World Heritage Site and enjoy an overnight cultural experience with the indigenous Tharu community. Experience their culture through dance and song, along with a traditional meal in the familial dining area. In the evening, retreat back to your private thatched cottage to watch the buffalo and goats roaming about.

  • Private Vehicle: Pokhara - Royal Chitwan National Park, 4 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

  • Cycling: Explore the village and its surroundings with a guided bike ride. Enjoy sunset on the banks of the Narayani river over a cup of tea.
  • Barauli Community Guesthouse Stay: Enjoy the hospitality of the Tharu, an indigenous community from the Teral belt of Nepal who live in eco-friendly homes. Experience their unique culture through dances, songs, and a delicious traditional meal. Day 14: Chitwan National Park to Kathmandu. Travel back to the capital city and enjoy a free evening for last minute shopping and exploring.

Day 1 – Arrive in India!
Welcome to India, a country that requires little introduction. This vast subcontinent is a tapestry of unrivaled cultures, offering phenomenal cuisine, warm hospitality, remarkable diversity, and immersive architecture shaped by religion, pride, patriotism, and history.
Arrive throughout the day, get an airport transfer included on day one and meet your group leader at your hotel in the heart of New Delhi. Tonight, you’ll venture out as a group for your welcome dinner and your first chance to sample that famous Indian cuisine.

Day 2 - Delhi City Tour & Street Food Tour
This morning you'll jump straight on the city’s metro with your guide and make your way to Jama Masjid, the city’s oldest mosque. Ready your appetite, because you’re about to taste your way through Old Delhi’s legendary street food scene. Wander through tangled alleyways and try breakfast favourites like Bedmi Poori with potato curry, crispy jalebi, or hot paratha straight from the pan. Keep your eyes peeled for the local chai wallah, pouring steaming cups of sweet, spiced tea.
Next, you'll hop aboard a rickshaw (similar to Tuk-Tuks) and weave through Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in the city. Lose yourself in the chaos of spice-scented backstreets and visit Khari Baoli, the largest open-air spice market in Asia. While Hinduism is the dominant religion here, Delhi is also home to a significant Sikh community. You’ll learn more about their traditions over a vegetarian lunch at a local Sikh temple, and see the impressive community kitchen where thousands of free meals are prepared daily.
This evening, your guide will lead you to a local restaurant for an indulgent Mughlai dinner to top off a big day exploring Delhi.

Day 3 - Agra Fort & The Taj Mahal
After breakfast, jump aboard a local train for an air-conditioned ride to Agra. Known worldwide for the iconic Taj Mahal, Agra is a city rich in Mughal history, filled with lush gardens and architecture. This afternoon, you'll head to the impressive Taj Mahal and then explore one of India’s finest forts, Agra Fort. Step inside its imposing red sandstone walls to discover throne rooms, intricate mosques, and sweeping views across the city.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at Sheroes Hangout, a vegetarian and vegan café with a powerful purpose. This inspiring social enterprise is run by women who are survivors of acid attacks, offering them employment, opportunities, and a welcoming space to share their stories.

Day 4 - Bollywood Movie
Say goodbye to Agra and hop on your air-conditioned public bus to the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur. Designed by royalty, Jaipur is a city of grand forts, lavish palaces, and buzzing bazaars, with its iconic pink-washed buildings welcoming visitors for centuries.
This evening, step into the glitz and drama of Indian cinema with a Bollywood blockbuster at the spectacular Raj Mandir Cinema – a Jaipur landmark. Expect a whirlwind of action, romance, drama, and music (sometimes all at once) in one of the most opulent theatres in the country. Your leader will also have plenty of great dinner recommendations to round out your night.

Day 5 - Jaipur: Pink City & the Monkey Temple
Start your morning with breakfast at one of Jaipur’s much-loved local spots, such as the iconic Samrat Restaurant. Then, join your guide for an orientation walk through the walled old city. Wander the local markets, hear the story behind Jaipur’s “Pink City” nickname, meet friendly traders, and learn about the fragrant spices that are the backbone of Indian cooking. You’ll also stop to admire the Palace of the Winds, a stunning red and pink sandstone masterpiece and one of Jaipur’s most recognisable landmarks.
Next, hop into Tuk Tuks and wind your way up to Galta-Ji, better known as the Monkey Temple. Built into the hills and surrounded by natural springs, this sacred site is home to hundreds of playful grey long-tailed monkeys. The rest of the day is free for you to explore more of Jaipur at your own pace.

Day 6 - Pushkar, Blessing on the Lake
After breakfast in the morning, you'll take a private transfer to Pushkar, known as one of the holiest towns in India. Pushkar is a backpacker’s paradise with amazing food, beautiful markets, rolling landscapes, hiking, and unrivalled sunsets. In the afternoon, a local Brahmin will induct you to Pushkar properly with a blessing on the holy lake, and you’ll grab a drink at a lakeside cafe before heading back to your accommodation for the night

Day 7 - Udaipur, Sunset Cruise on Lake Pichola
Today you'll return to Ajmer before taking the train to Udaipur, the “White City” – also known as the city of lakes. It is also the location for filming the James Bond film, Octopussy! The lakes and architecture provide a perfect balance between the hectic and the tranquil and no better way to experience this is with a walk through the markets and old town and finishing with a private sunset cruise on the lake. Afterwards, you’ll head to one of our favourite rooftop restaurants for dinner with a view.

Day 8 - Udaipur
Welcome to Udaipur, the enchanting ‘City of Lakes’. Built around the shimmering waters of Lake Pichola, Udaipur is a tapestry of ornate palaces, intricate temples, and grand havelis (merchant mansions). This morning, join your leader for a walking tour through its winding streets, browsing shops filled with colourful Rajasthani crafts and textiles. You’ll also visit the magnificent Jagdish Temple, where the detailed stone carvings are nothing short of mesmerising.
The afternoon is yours to explore, perhaps wander through the opulent City Palace or relax by the lake with a chai in hand. In the evening, step inside a local home for a hands-on cooking class. You’ll learn how to prepare a traditional vegetarian north Indian thali. A feast of rice, dahl, vegetables, roti, papad, curd, chutney or pickle, and a sweet treat to finish. After all that cooking, sit down with your hosts to enjoy the flavours of your creation.

Day 9 - On to Jodhpur
Today you will take a bus to the home of the blue city, Jodhpur. On arrival, we’ll transfer to our traditional Haveli accommodation. Your Haveli is situated in the middle of the blue city where the walls are painted blue throughout this labyrinth of buildings in the shadow of the ever imposing Mehrangarh Fort.
In the late afternoon, you will stroll through the mesmerising blue city and pause at the Jodhpur stepwell, an impressive marvel of ancient stonework. As you wander around the clock tower market, you can sample the famous Saffron Lassi and some delicious samosas. Finally, you will head back to your accommodation to wrap up the day.

Day 10 - Mehrangarh Fort & Overnight Train
You will have the morning free to relax after yesterday's travel. During your free time, you can choose to explore the blue city on foot, take a rooftop yoga class, or, for the more adventurous, zipline over the ramparts of the Jodhpur fort. In the early afternoon, your group will meet and walk to the Mehrangarh fort with your local guide. Your guide will show you around the immaculately kept fort, and with the assistance of an audio guide, you’ll leave with a thorough understanding of Indian royal life.
Return to the hotel for wash and change before your transfer to the railway station for your overnight train to Delhi.

Day 11 - Delhi
On your arrival in Delhi, you will be transferred from the train station to your final hotel.
You will have the afternoon free to do as you please before meeting with your group to enjoy your final dinner in India with your new travel friends.

Day 12 - Let's go to Nepal!
This morning you will be transferred to Delhi Airport for your included flight to Kathmandu. Say goodbye India and hello Nepal!
Upon arrival in Nepal, you will be greeted at the airport and begin the final part of your Expedition tour in Kathmandu, the vibrant and colorful capital teeming with life. After a day of travel you will be ready for another warm welcome dinner at an authentic Nepali restaurant in Thamel Bazaar, where you’ll indulge in local flavors amid the buzz of this cultural hotspot.

Day 13 - Exploring Kathmandu
Explore the vibrant city of Kathmandu on your included city tour, where ancient traditions meet modern life. You’ll explore the iconic Kathmandu Durbar Square, marveling at its architecture and historic palaces. Visit the Swoyambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, for serene spiritual vibes and panoramic city views. Don’t miss Patan Durbar Square, famous for its exquisite temples and artisan shops.
You’ll end your day with a unique cooking demonstration and dinner at Seven Women, a social enterprise devoted to empowering marginalised women through education and employment opportunities. Savor the flavors of authentic Nepalese cuisine while supporting a meaningful cause.

Day 14 - Journey to Chitwan National Park
Today, after breakfast, you’ll travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chitwan National Park, a sanctuary for diverse wildlife including rhinoceros, tigers, elephants, and over 500 species of birds. Widely recognised as one of the best national parks in Asia, Chitwan offers a unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Settle into your comfortable accommodation, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature. In the evening, relax and immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance of this extraordinary place.

Day 15 - Chitwan Jungle Adventures
Immerse yourself in the wonders of Chitwan with a series of captivating jungle activities. After breakfast, you’ll start your morning with a one-hour jungle walk, where you can observe the rich flora and fauna up close. Next up is a 45-minute canoe ride along the tranquil river, offering a unique perspective of the park’s diverse ecosystem. In the afternoon, gear up for a 4-hour jeep safari, providing plenty of opportunities to spot the park’s incredible wildlife, including rhinos, tigers, and a variety of native birds. Chitwan is one of the few places in the world where you might witness rhinos roaming the streets of the town, showcasing the unique coexistence of humans and wildlife in this region.

Day 16 - Gateway to the Himalayas: Pokhara
Today you will journey to Pokhara, an enchanting lakeside city, also known as the Gateway to the Himalayas. Nestled in the foothills of the Annapurna range, Pokhara offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. After settling into your new accommodation you’ll be taken on an evening orientation walk around the tranquil waters of Phewa Lake, visit the Tal Barahi Temple, explore charming fisherman villages, and wander through vibrant local bazaars filled with colorful handicrafts and delicious street food. We do not doubt that you will ever forget this incredible week exploring Nepal.
Your included transfer will be a 8-9 hour journey. To avoid this longer journey, you may also take a short domestic flight back to Kathmandu. *Please note that this will have to be arranged independently and is not included in the tour.

Day 2 - Exploring Kathmandu
Explore the vibrant city of Kathmandu on your included city tour, where ancient traditions meet modern life. You’ll explore the iconic Kathmandu Durbar Square, marveling at its architecture and historic palaces. Visit the Swoyambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, for serene spiritual vibes and panoramic city views. Don’t miss Patan Durbar Square, famous for its exquisite temples and artisan shops.

Day 3 - Journey to Chitwan National Park
Today, after breakfast, you’ll travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chitwan National Park, a sanctuary for diverse wildlife including rhinoceros, tigers, elephants, and over 500 species of birds. Widely recognised as one of the best national parks in Asia, Chitwan offers a unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Day 4 - Chitwan Jungle Adventures
Immerse yourself in the wonders of Chitwan with a series of captivating jungle activities. After breakfast, you’ll start off with a 45-minute canoe ride along the tranquil river, offering a unique perspective of the park’s diverse ecosystem. Next you’ll contiue walking along the river on a guided walk into the local village. In the afternoon, gear up for a 4-hour jeep safari, providing plenty of opportunities to spot the park’s incredible wildlife, including rhinos, tigers, and a variety of exotic birds. Chitwan is one of the few places in the world where you might witness rhinos roaming the streets of the town, showcasing the unique coexistence of humans and wildlife in this region.

Day 5 - Gateway to the Himalayas: Pokhara
Today you will journey to Pokhara, an enchanting lakeside city, also known as the Gateway to the Himalayas. Nestled in the foothills of the Annapurna range, Pokhara offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. After settling into your new accommodation you’ll be taken on an evening orientation walk around the tranquil waters of Phewa Lake, visit the Tal Barahi Temple, explore charming fisherman villages, and wander through vibrant local bazaars filled with colorful handicrafts and delicious street food. Embark on a 5-day Himalayan adventure like no other, where time and trekking prowess need not limit your dreams. Join us on the enchanting Poon Hill Trek and unlock the magic of Nepal's mountain culture.

Your Journey:
A mere 1.5-hour drive from the vibrant city of Pokhara, your epic trek begins. Venture along ancient trails connecting local communities, journey through quaint villages, and wander through blooming rhododendron forests in the spring. Traverse terraced slopes, paddy fields, and lush greenery. Experience the heartwarming hospitality of local Gurung villages as you rest in their welcoming tea houses.

The pinnacle of your journey awaits at the summit viewpoint of Poon Hill, standing tall at 3,200 meters. Here, you'll be greeted by the breathtaking majesty of the world's tallest peaks: Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Machhapuchhare, Annapurna, and Lamjung.

Your 5-day Trek Includes:

  • Private, round-trip overland transportation (Pokhara to Pokhara)
  • Accommodation in tea houses during the trek
  • All meals during the trek
  • All required documentation and trekking permit (TIMS)
  • Guide fees
  • National Park fee
  • All government and local taxes

Itinerary: 

  • Day 1: Drive from Pokhara to Naya Pul and trek to Tikhe Dhunga/Ulleri (6-7 hours).
  • Day 2: Trek from Tikhe Dhunga/Ulleri to Ghorepani (5-6 hours).
  • Day 3: Trek from Ghorepani to Tadapani, including a morning hike to Poon Hill (4-5 hours).
  • Day 4: Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk (3-4 hours).
  • Day 5: Trek from Ghandruk to Naya Pul and return to Pokhara.

Important Considerations:

Expect the unexpected - The weather, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns and health of fellow trekking members can impact the number of days it takes to complete the trek; therefore, we recommend allocating 1-2 days extra to ensure you will make your international flight home.

Accommodation - You can expect to stay in local run lodges known as tea houses which are simply furnished with a bed and occasionally a small table. Bathrooms are typically shared and are in a separate area of the teahouse or in some tea houses will be outside. Staying in a teahouse is a great way to support these local businesses and boost the local economy in the Annapurna Region.

Meals - You will be doing “teahouse trek,” meaning there are villages with lodges and restaurants to eat and stay in along the entire route. You are expected to eat breakfast and dinner in the same lodge where you are spending the night. Typical food available for lunch and dinner is Nepali rice and lentils, pasta, potato dishes, soups or pizzas. Delicious pancakes, porridge, toast and eggs are the main breakfast fare, while tea, coffee and hot chocolate are always available. You will likely be pleasantly surprised at the variety of food at the lodges.

Level of fitness required - There are a lot of steep ascents and descents on the trek and a good level of fitness is required. Some days you may be required to walk up to six hours. Please note that the estimated walking time each day will vary according to the overall fitness of the group and weather conditions.

Footwear and clothing - Bring well broken-in hiking shoes, suitable for snow, thick socks, light socks, camp shoes; down or fiber filled waterproof jacket and pants, sweater or fleece jacket, underwear, warm and cotton or polypropylene pants or jeans, shirts and t-shirts, shorts, long underwear, wool hat, sun hat, gloves, bathing suit; comfortable track/gym suit.

Travel insurance - Although the itinerary has been made accordingly so that the trekker's body slowly gets used to the altitude, it is important to note that you will be at the altitude of approximately 3200m at the base camp. The risks of trekking at a high altitude are significant; therefore, it is essential to note that most standard travel insurance packages do not include high-altitude trekking. As such, please be aware of the approximate altitude of 3200m when obtaining travel insurance, as you will need to ensure you are covered for all altitude related illnesses (including helicopter rescues). 

Your Budgeting Responsibilities:

Without knowing what the right price is to pay in Nepal for an airport transfer, you can easily get overcharged, or spend a long time trying to find a decent price. Enjoy a stress free ride back to the airport arranged by our Local Team. 

You’ll be picked up from your accommodation at your chosen time, and driven directly to Kathmandu International Airport (KTM) with plenty of time for your flight. If you are based in Chitwan or Pokhara, our Local Team will help arrange a bus transfer back for you the day before your flight is due to depart and a night of accommodation at local accommodation in Kathmandu. Your airport transfer will then be from the accommodation.

In addition to completing the mighty journey to Everest Base Camp, you will visit an ancient monastery in Tengboche, and enjoy stunning views of Mt Lhotse, Mt Makalu, and Cho Yo. Amidst all the rugged mountains vistas, you will also see the Khumbu Glacier and ascend the famous Kala Pathar for a close, unobstructed view of Mt Everest.

This trek begins on the first and third Sunday of each month; however, if you are looking to join outside of this time, please let your IVHQ Program Manager know and they will be happy to check availability for you.

Day 1: Arriving at The Capital – Kathmandu (1400 m), where you will spend the night in a local hotel
Day 2: Fly to Lukla (2860 m) and Trek to Phakding (2610m) Trek duration 3-3.5 hours
Day 3: Phakding to Namche Bazar (3440 m) Trek duration 5.5 hours
Day 4: Acclimatization at Namche Bazar
Day 5: Trek to Tengboche (3860 m) Trek duration: 5-6 hours

Important things to note:


Price - The price is quoted for 7 or more volunteers taking part on the tour. If there are fewer volunteers taking part on the tour, the cost will be higher. Any difference (between $20 and $290) will need to be paid directly to the local team in-country before starting the tour. You will be notified at your program orientation if there is any extra amount to be paid. Your Program Manager can provide more information on the potential cost based on numbers of volunteers participating.

Expect the unexpected - The weather and health of fellow trekking members can impact the number of days it takes to complete the trek, therefore we recommend allocating 1-2 days extra to ensure you will make your international flight home. January & February can be very cold. 

Accommodation - You can expect to stay in local run lodges known as tea houses which are simply furnished with a bed and occasionally a small table. Bathrooms are typically shared and are in a separate area of the teahouse or in some tea houses will be outside. Staying in a teahouse is a great way to support these local businesses and boost the local economy in the Everest Region. You will need to bring a sleeping bag with you. 

Meals - You will be doing “teahouse trek,” meaning there are villages with lodges and restaurants to eat and stay in along the entire route. You are expected to eat breakfast and dinner in the same lodge where you are spending the night. Typical food available for lunch and dinner is Nepali rice and lentils, pasta, potato dishes, soups or pizzas. Delicious pancakes, porridge, toast and eggs are the main breakfast fare, while tea, coffee and hot chocolate are always available. You will probably be pleasantly surprised at the variety of food at the lodges.

Level of fitness required - There are a lot of steep ascents and descents on the trek and a good level of fitness is required. Some days you may be required to walk up to seven hours. Please note that the estimated walking time each day will vary according to the overall fitness of the group and weather conditions.

Packing list - Bring well broken-in hiking shoes that are suitable for snow, thick socks, light socks, camp shoes (e.g. flip flops or sandals), down or fibre filled waterproof jacket and pants, sweater or fleece jacket, underwear, warm and cotton or polypropylene pants or jeans, shirts and T-shirts, shorts, wool hat, sun hat/cap, gloves, bathing suit, comfortable track/gym suit, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50), elastic knee brace, ear plugs, wallet, books or kindle, head torch, basic first aid kit and personal medication, extra batteries for camera and gadgets, cables and chargers, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitizer, etc.).

Travel insurance - Although the itinerary has been made accordingly so that the trekker's body slowly gets used to the altitude, it is important to note that you will be at the altitude of approximately 5545m at the base camp. The risks of trekking at a high altitude are significant; therefore, it is essential to note that most standard travel insurance packages do not include high-altitude trekking. As such, please be aware of the approximate altitude of 5545m when obtaining travel insurance, as you will need to ensure you are covered for all altitude related illnesses (including helicopter rescues).

Tips - There is generally a minimum US$250 tip required for the Everest Base Camp Trek and this will be paid to the relevant guide/s once in-country. 

Cancellation - It is worth noting that any cancellations within 14 days of your start date for the Everest Base Camp Trek may incur a cancellation fee. 

You will be responsible for:


  • Any difference in the cost, based on the number of people joining - please see 'Price' point above
  • Personal expenses (beverages, laundry, tips, phone calls, hot showers, extra snacks, etc.)
  • Items to pack - please see 'Packing list' point above
  • Sleeping bag
  • Medical evacuation in case of emergency

Keep an eye out for elements of different religions, as King Akbar built three palaces for each of his favourite wives—a Hindu, a Muslim, and a Christian—in the city.
  • Abhaneri Stepwell Visit: Walk around the amazing Chand Baori, a tenth century water tank that's an impressive 30m (100 ft) deep. Learn about ancient Indian environmentalism—a "baori" is a unique Indian invention for harvesting rainwater.
  • Dhula Village Experience: Get a closer look at village life with a stay in rural Dhula. Enjoy opportunities to interact and explore that may include meeting shepherds and their flocks, cycling through hamlets, tea with villagers at the local temple, trekking in the hillocks.

Day 5: Dhula Village/Jaipur. Continue to the pink city of Jaipur. Along the way, try your hand at block printing with the women of the Anoothi Project before arriving at your hotel. Built according to Hindu architectural principles, Jaipur utilizes a unique organization unlike anywhere else in India.

  • Jaipur Orientation Tour: Enjoy an orientation of the Pink City by foot, with a short e-rickshaw ride in the walled city.
  • Anoothi Block Printing Experience: Women from marginalised communities outside Jaipur came together to create the Anoothi Project. In Hindi, Anoothi means 'unique and extraordinary' and by teaching these women to master the traditionally male handicraft of block printing, the collective shines a light on the unique and extraordinary within each individual. At this visit, engage in a hands-on block printing activity with the local women as you indulge in some local snacks prepared by your hosts

Day 6: Jaipur. Enjoy a visit to the Amber Fort, famous for its mixture of Hindu and Muslim architecture. After, visit the City Palace and have a photo opportunity at Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds).

Today's activities:
  • Amber Fort Visit: Take in the Hindu and Muslim architecture of the beautiful Amber Fort. Wander through the halls and courtyards and admire the intricate details.
  • City Palace Visit: Explore the courtyards, gardens, and buildings that make up the City Palace. Located in the heart of the Old City, it is a striking blend of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture. Visit the palace's museum to look at ancient carriages and the former maharaja's gold-embroidered wedding outfit.

Day 7: Jaipur/Delhi. If you aren't afraid of heights, opt for a morning hot air balloon ride over Jaipur. Return to Delhi in the afternoon and enjoy free time to explore more of the bustling city.

Day 8: Delhi/Kathmandu. Catch a flight from Delhi to Kathmandu today where you will enjoy free time in the city before a walk with the group in Patan Durbar Square.

  • Plane: Delhi - Kathmandu, 2 hours. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... yup, it is a plane, actually.
  • Free Time: Free time in Kathmandu to get to know the capital city of Nepal.
  • Patan Durbar Square Tour: Enjoy a guided tour of this spectacular square built primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries. Located within it are the Royal Palace and many temples built in the traditional Newari pagoda style. We also visit the Golden Temple and Patan museum. South of the square lies the Kumari Chowk, home to Nepal's living goddess, the Kumari, a prepubescent girl chosen as the incarnation of the Hindu goddess Talejn. The Kumari lives a cloistered life, rarely leaving the confines of the chowk. When she does, it is for important religious festivals, but her feet are not allowed to touch the ground. Once the Kumari reaches puberty, another 3-5-year-old girl will take her place. If she is receiving visitors, we may be able to stop by for a blessing.

Day 9: Kathmandu. Take a guided tour of the royal city of Bhaktapur and visit the most ancient shrine in Kathmandu, Swayambhunath Temple. Enjoy a cooking demonstration and learn how to make Nepalese momos (dumplings). Afterwards, taste the delicious dishes made during an authentic local lunch. The evening is free to do as you please.

Today's activities:
  • Bhaktapur Excursion: Visit this unique old town known as the City of Devotees. Explore Hindu temples, pagodas, palaces, and monuments, including the beautiful wood-carved palace in Durbar Square. You can pick up clay pots and other souvenirs in the colourful open markets and taste home made yogurt, known as khopa dhau, which Bhaktapur is famous for.
  • Nepalese Dumplings Cooking Demonstration: Enjoy a cooking demonstration at a local establishment and learn how to make momos (traditional dumplings). Afterwards, taste the delicious dishes made during a Nepali lunch.
  • Swayambhunath Temple Visit: Visit Swayambhunath Buddhist temple and Unesco World Heritage Site, the most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy shrines in Kathmandu. Explore the structure and be sure to check out the Buddha's eyes painted on each side of the Stupa. The site is also known as the monkey temple, for the vast amount of creatures who call the complex home.

Day 10: Kathmandu/Pokhara. Drive across the mountains to beautiful Pokhara. Immerse yourself in the views of the spectacular Annapurna Range. Upon arrival set out on an orientation walk along Phewa Lake.

Day 11: Pokhara. Spend the day as you please, indulging in a variety of optional activities in Pokhara. Find a cute cafe to sip some tea in or maybe go for a short hike in the Annapurna ranges. You could also walk up to Sarangkot for incredible views or spend time boating in Phewa lake and walk through the gardens.

  • Free Time: Enjoy Pokhara today. Hike in the foothills of the Annapurna Range or take a stroll through the lakeside market of Pokhara.

Day 12: Pokhara to Chitwan National Park. Leave Pokhara behind and transfer by private vehicle to Chitwan. Upon arrival enjoy a welcome by the Chitwan Community Guesthouse. Travel to this UNESCO World Heritage Site and enjoy an overnight cultural experience with the indigenous Tharu community. Experience their culture through dance and song, along with a traditional meal in the familial dining area. In the evening, retreat back to your private thatched cottage to watch the buffalo and goats roaming about.

Day 14: Chitwan National Park to Kathmandu. Travel back to the capital city and enjoy a free evening for last minute shopping and exploring.

Day 1 – Arrive in India!
Welcome to India, a country that requires little introduction. This vast subcontinent is a tapestry of unrivaled cultures, offering phenomenal cuisine, warm hospitality, remarkable diversity, and immersive architecture shaped by religion, pride, patriotism, and history.
Arrive throughout the day, get an airport transfer included on day one and meet your group leader at your hotel in the heart of New Delhi. Tonight, you’ll venture out as a group for your welcome dinner and your first chance to sample that famous Indian cuisine.

Day 2 - Delhi City Tour & Street Food Tour
This morning you'll jump straight on the city’s metro with your guide and make your way to Jama Masjid, the city’s oldest mosque. Ready your appetite, because you’re about to taste your way through Old Delhi’s legendary street food scene. Wander through tangled alleyways and try breakfast favourites like Bedmi Poori with potato curry, crispy jalebi, or hot paratha straight from the pan. Keep your eyes peeled for the local chai wallah, pouring steaming cups of sweet, spiced tea.
Next, you'll hop aboard a rickshaw (similar to Tuk-Tuks) and weave through Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in the city. Lose yourself in the chaos of spice-scented backstreets and visit Khari Baoli, the largest open-air spice market in Asia. While Hinduism is the dominant religion here, Delhi is also home to a significant Sikh community. You’ll learn more about their traditions over a vegetarian lunch at a local Sikh temple, and see the impressive community kitchen where thousands of free meals are prepared daily.
This evening, your guide will lead you to a local restaurant for an indulgent Mughlai dinner to top off a big day exploring Delhi.

Day 3 - Agra Fort & The Taj Mahal
After breakfast, jump aboard a local train for an air-conditioned ride to Agra. Known worldwide for the iconic Taj Mahal, Agra is a city rich in Mughal history, filled with lush gardens and architecture. This afternoon, you'll head to the impressive Taj Mahal and then explore one of India’s finest forts, Agra Fort. Step inside its imposing red sandstone walls to discover throne rooms, intricate mosques, and sweeping views across the city.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at Sheroes Hangout, a vegetarian and vegan café with a powerful purpose. This inspiring social enterprise is run by women who are survivors of acid attacks, offering them employment, opportunities, and a welcoming space to share their stories.

Day 4 - Bollywood Movie
Say goodbye to Agra and hop on your air-conditioned public bus to the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur. Designed by royalty, Jaipur is a city of grand forts, lavish palaces, and buzzing bazaars, with its iconic pink-washed buildings welcoming visitors for centuries.
This evening, step into the glitz and drama of Indian cinema with a Bollywood blockbuster at the spectacular Raj Mandir Cinema – a Jaipur landmark. Expect a whirlwind of action, romance, drama, and music (sometimes all at once) in one of the most opulent theatres in the country. Your leader will also have plenty of great dinner recommendations to round out your night.

Day 5 - Jaipur: Pink City & the Monkey Temple
Start your morning with breakfast at one of Jaipur’s much-loved local spots, such as the iconic Samrat Restaurant. Then, join your guide for an orientation walk through the walled old city. Wander the local markets, hear the story behind Jaipur’s “Pink City” nickname, meet friendly traders, and learn about the fragrant spices that are the backbone of Indian cooking. You’ll also stop to admire the Palace of the Winds, a stunning red and pink sandstone masterpiece and one of Jaipur’s most recognisable landmarks.
Next, hop into Tuk Tuks and wind your way up to Galta-Ji, better known as the Monkey Temple. Built into the hills and surrounded by natural springs, this sacred site is home to hundreds of playful grey long-tailed monkeys. The rest of the day is free for you to explore more of Jaipur at your own pace.

Day 6 - Pushkar, Blessing on the Lake
After breakfast in the morning, you'll take a private transfer to Pushkar, known as one of the holiest towns in India. Pushkar is a backpacker’s paradise with amazing food, beautiful markets, rolling landscapes, hiking, and unrivalled sunsets. In the afternoon, a local Brahmin will induct you to Pushkar properly with a blessing on the holy lake, and you’ll grab a drink at a lakeside cafe before heading back to your accommodation for the night

Day 7 - Udaipur, Sunset Cruise on Lake Pichola
Today you'll return to Ajmer before taking the train to Udaipur, the “White City” – also known as the city of lakes. It is also the location for filming the James Bond film, Octopussy! The lakes and architecture provide a perfect balance between the hectic and the tranquil and no better way to experience this is with a walk through the markets and old town and finishing with a private sunset cruise on the lake. Afterwards, you’ll head to one of our favourite rooftop restaurants for dinner with a view.

Day 8 - Udaipur
Welcome to Udaipur, the enchanting ‘City of Lakes’. Built around the shimmering waters of Lake Pichola, Udaipur is a tapestry of ornate palaces, intricate temples, and grand havelis (merchant mansions). This morning, join your leader for a walking tour through its winding streets, browsing shops filled with colourful Rajasthani crafts and textiles. You’ll also visit the magnificent Jagdish Temple, where the detailed stone carvings are nothing short of mesmerising.
The afternoon is yours to explore, perhaps wander through the opulent City Palace or relax by the lake with a chai in hand. In the evening, step inside a local home for a hands-on cooking class. You’ll learn how to prepare a traditional vegetarian north Indian thali. A feast of rice, dahl, vegetables, roti, papad, curd, chutney or pickle, and a sweet treat to finish. After all that cooking, sit down with your hosts to enjoy the flavours of your creation.

Day 9 - On to Jodhpur
Today you will take a bus to the home of the blue city, Jodhpur. On arrival, we’ll transfer to our traditional Haveli accommodation. Your Haveli is situated in the middle of the blue city where the walls are painted blue throughout this labyrinth of buildings in the shadow of the ever imposing Mehrangarh Fort.
In the late afternoon, you will stroll through the mesmerising blue city and pause at the Jodhpur stepwell, an impressive marvel of ancient stonework. As you wander around the clock tower market, you can sample the famous Saffron Lassi and some delicious samosas. Finally, you will head back to your accommodation to wrap up the day.

Day 10 - Mehrangarh Fort & Overnight Train
You will have the morning free to relax after yesterday's travel. During your free time, you can choose to explore the blue city on foot, take a rooftop yoga class, or, for the more adventurous, zipline over the ramparts of the Jodhpur fort. In the early afternoon, your group will meet and walk to the Mehrangarh fort with your local guide. Your guide will show you around the immaculately kept fort, and with the assistance of an audio guide, you’ll leave with a thorough understanding of Indian royal life.
Return to the hotel for wash and change before your transfer to the railway station for your overnight train to Delhi.

Day 11 - Delhi
On your arrival in Delhi, you will be transferred from the train station to your final hotel.
You will have the afternoon free to do as you please before meeting with your group to enjoy your final dinner in India with your new travel friends.

Day 12 - Let's go to Nepal!
This morning you will be transferred to Delhi Airport for your included flight to Kathmandu. Say goodbye India and hello Nepal!
Upon arrival in Nepal, you will be greeted at the airport and begin the final part of your Expedition tour in Kathmandu, the vibrant and colorful capital teeming with life. After a day of travel you will be ready for another warm welcome dinner at an authentic Nepali restaurant in Thamel Bazaar, where you’ll indulge in local flavors amid the buzz of this cultural hotspot.

Day 13 - Exploring Kathmandu
Explore the vibrant city of Kathmandu on your included city tour, where ancient traditions meet modern life. You’ll explore the iconic Kathmandu Durbar Square, marveling at its architecture and historic palaces. Visit the Swoyambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, for serene spiritual vibes and panoramic city views. Don’t miss Patan Durbar Square, famous for its exquisite temples and artisan shops.
You’ll end your day with a unique cooking demonstration and dinner at Seven Women, a social enterprise devoted to empowering marginalised women through education and employment opportunities. Savor the flavors of authentic Nepalese cuisine while supporting a meaningful cause.

Day 14 - Journey to Chitwan National Park
Today, after breakfast, you’ll travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chitwan National Park, a sanctuary for diverse wildlife including rhinoceros, tigers, elephants, and over 500 species of birds. Widely recognised as one of the best national parks in Asia, Chitwan offers a unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Settle into your comfortable accommodation, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature. In the evening, relax and immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance of this extraordinary place.

Day 15 - Chitwan Jungle Adventures
Immerse yourself in the wonders of Chitwan with a series of captivating jungle activities. After breakfast, you’ll start your morning with a one-hour jungle walk, where you can observe the rich flora and fauna up close. Next up is a 45-minute canoe ride along the tranquil river, offering a unique perspective of the park’s diverse ecosystem. In the afternoon, gear up for a 4-hour jeep safari, providing plenty of opportunities to spot the park’s incredible wildlife, including rhinos, tigers, and a variety of native birds. Chitwan is one of the few places in the world where you might witness rhinos roaming the streets of the town, showcasing the unique coexistence of humans and wildlife in this region.

Day 16 - Gateway to the Himalayas: Pokhara
Today you will journey to Pokhara, an enchanting lakeside city, also known as the Gateway to the Himalayas. Nestled in the foothills of the Annapurna range, Pokhara offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. After settling into your new accommodation you’ll be taken on an evening orientation walk around the tranquil waters of Phewa Lake, visit the Tal Barahi Temple, explore charming fisherman villages, and wander through vibrant local bazaars filled with colorful handicrafts and delicious street food. Take a moment to enjoy the stunning reflection of the surrounding mountains on the lake’s surface as you immerse yourself in the local culture.

Day 17 - Trekking to Australian Camp
Set out on a scenic trek to Australian Camp via Dhampus village. This 5-6 hour hike takes you through lush rhododendron forests, terraced farmlands, and traditional villages, offering breathtaking views of the Annapurna Mountain Range. As you traverse the trails, you’ll encounter vibrant local wildlife and experience the culture of the indigenous communities.
The trek provides numerous opportunities for photo moments, with stunning vistas at every turn. Whether you’re an keen hiker or a nature enthusiast, this journey will captivate you with its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. It’s an experience that will transform your perspective on the world, leaving you with memories you’ll cherish forever. As the night approaches, gather for a farewell dinner and reflect on the incredible adventure and friendships you’ve made on tour.

Day 18 - Return to Kathmandu
Today you will bid farewell to the serene beauty of Pokhara and journey back to Kathmandu. Take a moment to reflect on the vibrant culture, warm-hearted locals, and breathtaking landscapes that have made your Nepali adventure extraordinary. We do not doubt that you will ever forget this incredible week exploring Nepal.
Your included transfer will be a 8-9 hour journey. To avoid this longer journey, you may also take a short domestic flight back to Kathmandu. *Please note that this will have to be arranged independently and is not included in the tour.

Day 1 - Welcome to Nepal!
Begin your journey by arriving in Kathmandu, the vibrant and colorful capital teeming with life. Your Himalayan adventure starts here with a warm welcome dinner at an authentic Nepali restaurant in Thamel Bazaar, where you’ll indulge in local flavors amid the buzz of this cultural hotspot.

Day 2 - Exploring Kathmandu
Explore the vibrant city of Kathmandu on your included city tour, where ancient traditions meet modern life. You’ll explore the iconic Kathmandu Durbar Square, marveling at its architecture and historic palaces. Visit the Swoyambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, for serene spiritual vibes and panoramic city views. Don’t miss Patan Durbar Square, famous for its exquisite temples and artisan shops.
You’ll end your day with a unique cooking demonstration and dinner at Seven Women, a social enterprise devoted to empowering marginalised women through education and employment opportunities. Savor the flavors of authentic Nepalese cuisine while supporting a meaningful cause.

Day 3 - Journey to Chitwan National Park
Today, after breakfast, you’ll travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chitwan National Park, a sanctuary for diverse wildlife including rhinoceros, tigers, elephants, and over 500 species of birds. Widely recognised as one of the best national parks in Asia, Chitwan offers a unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Settle into your comfortable accommodation, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature. In the evening, relax and immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance of this extraordinary place.

Day 4 - Chitwan Jungle Adventures
Immerse yourself in the wonders of Chitwan with a series of captivating jungle activities. After breakfast, you’ll start off with a 45-minute canoe ride along the tranquil river, offering a unique perspective of the park’s diverse ecosystem. Next you’ll contiue walking along the river on a guided walk into the local village. In the afternoon, gear up for a 4-hour jeep safari, providing plenty of opportunities to spot the park’s incredible wildlife, including rhinos, tigers, and a variety of exotic birds. Chitwan is one of the few places in the world where you might witness rhinos roaming the streets of the town, showcasing the unique coexistence of humans and wildlife in this region.

Day 5 - Gateway to the Himalayas: Pokhara
Today you will journey to Pokhara, an enchanting lakeside city, also known as the Gateway to the Himalayas. Nestled in the foothills of the Annapurna range, Pokhara offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. After settling into your new accommodation you’ll be taken on an evening orientation walk around the tranquil waters of Phewa Lake, visit the Tal Barahi Temple, explore charming fisherman villages, and wander through vibrant local bazaars filled with colorful handicrafts and delicious street food. Take a moment to enjoy the stunning reflection of the surrounding mountains on the lake’s surface as you immerse yourself in the local culture.

Day 6 - Trekking to Australian Camp
Set out on a scenic trek to Australian Camp via Dhampus village. This 5-6 hour hike takes you through lush rhododendron forests, terraced farmlands, and traditional villages, offering breathtaking views of the Annapurna Mountain Range. As you traverse the trails, you’ll encounter vibrant local wildlife and experience the culture of the indigenous communities.
The trek provides numerous opportunities for photo moments, with stunning vistas at every turn. Whether you’re an keen hiker or a nature enthusiast, this journey will captivate you with its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. It’s an experience that will transform your perspective on the world, leaving you with memories you’ll cherish forever. As the night approaches, gather for a farewell dinner and reflect on the incredible adventure and friendships you’ve made on tour.

Day 7 - Return to Kathmandu
Today you will bid farewell to the serene beauty of Pokhara and journey back to Kathmandu. Take a moment to reflect on the vibrant culture, warm-hearted locals, and breathtaking landscapes that have made your Nepali adventure extraordinary. We do not doubt that you will ever forget this incredible week exploring Nepal.

Your included transfer will be a 8-9 hour journey. To avoid this longer journey, you may also take a short domestic flight back to Kathmandu. *Please note that this will have to be arranged independently and is not included in the tour.

If you are continuing to your volunteer program you will need to ensure you have any additional accommodation before the start of your program, our team will help you organise what you need. 

If you are placed in Pokhara or Chitwan, you will travel to your placement location on Tuesday afternoon and you will begin work on Wednesday. If you are located in Kathmandu, you will begin work on Wednesday.

As you ascend toward Annapurna Base Camp on this moderate-level trek, you'll witness panoramic views of Himalayan wonders, including Himchuli, Annapurna South, Tent Peak, Machhapuchhre Fishtail, Annapurna III, and Ganga & Purna.

Itinerary:
Day 1: Pokhara to Nayapul to Jhinu Danda, then trek to Chhomrong (2,174m / 7,146ft)

Day 2: Chhomrong to Himalaya (2,900m / 9,515ft)
[Time: 6-7-hour trek]

Essential Insights:
  • Expect the Unexpected: Unforeseen factors like weather, road conditions, and fellow trekkers' health may affect the trek's duration. We recommend adding 1-2 extra days to ensure a smooth transition to your international flight home. Note that this trek is not advisable from January to mid-February due to weather conditions.
  • Accommodation: Anticipate staying in locally run lodges known as tea houses, featuring simple furnishings, shared rooms and shared bathrooms. Your support enhances the local economy in the Annapurna Region.
  • Meals: Relish a "teahouse trek" experience with a range of dining options in the villages. Breakfast and dinner are typically enjoyed at the same lodge where you spend the night, offering diverse culinary choices.
  • Fitness Requirements: The trek features steep ascents and descents + altitude gain that occurs quite quickly, demanding a good level of fitness. The daily walking time varies based on the group's fitness and weather conditions; so this trek is not recommended for older travellers or those with concerns about altitude adjustment.
  • Footwear and Clothing: Equip yourself with well-broken-in hiking shoes suitable for snow and waterproof. Additionally, bring comfortable clothing, including a windproof jacket. It is recommended that volunteers bring their own trekking equipment, but the Local Team can provide a down jacket, sleeping bag, walking poles and a backpack if required.
  • Travel insurance - Recognize that high-altitude trekking poses risks. Standard travel insurance packages often exclude high-altitude activities. Ensure your coverage includes altitude-related illnesses, including helicopter rescues, as you will be at an approx. altitude of 4130m.  
  • Timing - If you choose to join this program prior to your volunteer program beginning, you will need to arrive a week before your program start date (on the Sunday), just to ensure the things mentioned in the 'Expect the unexpected' section above don't affect the start of your volunteer program. If you do finish the trek earlier, then you would need to book extra nights of accommodation and the local team will help arrange these. 
  • SIM - Ncell SIM card has coverage up to Deurali, while NTC SIM card covers areas above that. 
  • Tips: Plan for a minimum US$100 tip for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, payable to your guides on-site.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Personal expenses (beverages, laundry, tips, phone calls, hot showers, extra snacks, etc.).
  • Travel insurance and medical evacuation coverage in emergencies.
  • Trekking gear, available for rent.
  • Contingency funds for unforeseen events such as flight cancellations, weather conditions, illnesses, and political unrest.
  • Additional tips and expenses for porters if required, as well as lunch and dinner in Pokhara.

Your Journey:
A mere 1.5-hour drive from the vibrant city of Pokhara, your epic trek begins. Venture along ancient trails connecting local communities, journey through quaint villages, and wander through blooming rhododendron forests in the spring. Traverse terraced slopes, paddy fields, and lush greenery. Experience the heartwarming hospitality of local Gurung villages as you rest in their welcoming tea houses.

The pinnacle of your journey awaits at the summit viewpoint of Poon Hill, standing tall at 3,200 meters. Here, you'll be greeted by the breathtaking majesty of the world's tallest peaks: Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Machhapuchhare, Annapurna, and Lamjung.

Your 5-day Trek Includes:

  • Private, round-trip overland transportation (Pokhara to Pokhara)
  • Accommodation in tea houses during the trek
  • All meals during the trek
  • All required documentation and trekking permit (TIMS)

Itinerary: 

  • Day 1: Drive from Pokhara to Naya Pul and trek to Tikhe Dhunga/Ulleri (6-7 hours).
  • Day 2: Trek from Tikhe Dhunga/Ulleri to Ghorepani (5-6 hours).
  • Day 3: Trek from Ghorepani to Tadapani, including a morning hike to Poon Hill (4-5 hours).
  • Day 4: Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk (3-4 hours).
  • Day 5: Trek from Ghandruk to Naya Pul and return to Pokhara.

Important Considerations:

Expect the unexpected - The weather, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns and health of fellow trekking members can impact the number of days it takes to complete the trek; therefore, we recommend allocating 1-2 days extra to ensure you will make your international flight home.

Accommodation - You can expect to stay in local run lodges known as tea houses which are simply furnished with a bed and occasionally a small table. Bathrooms are typically shared and are in a separate area of the teahouse or in some tea houses will be outside. Staying in a teahouse is a great way to support these local businesses and boost the local economy in the Annapurna Region.

Meals - You will be doing “teahouse trek,” meaning there are villages with lodges and restaurants to eat and stay in along the entire route. You are expected to eat breakfast and dinner in the same lodge where you are spending the night. Typical food available for lunch and dinner is Nepali rice and lentils, pasta, potato dishes, soups or pizzas. Delicious pancakes, porridge, toast and eggs are the main breakfast fare, while tea, coffee and hot chocolate are always available. You will likely be pleasantly surprised at the variety of food at the lodges.

Level of fitness required - There are a lot of steep ascents and descents on the trek and a good level of fitness is required. Some days you may be required to walk up to six hours. Please note that the estimated walking time each day will vary according to the overall fitness of the group and weather conditions.

Footwear and clothing - Bring well broken-in hiking shoes, suitable for snow, thick socks, light socks, camp shoes; down or fiber filled waterproof jacket and pants, sweater or fleece jacket, underwear, warm and cotton or polypropylene pants or jeans, shirts and t-shirts, shorts, long underwear, wool hat, sun hat, gloves, bathing suit; comfortable track/gym suit.

Travel insurance - Although the itinerary has been made accordingly so that the trekker's body slowly gets used to the altitude, it is important to note that you will be at the altitude of approximately 3200m at the base camp. The risks of trekking at a high altitude are significant; therefore, it is essential to note that most standard travel insurance packages do not include high-altitude trekking. As such, please be aware of the approximate altitude of 3200m when obtaining travel insurance, as you will need to ensure you are covered for all altitude related illnesses (including helicopter rescues).

Volunteers on the Nepal program are typically accommodated in a homestay; however, if you were interested in staying in a local hotel instead, then the private hotel room upgrade may be for you!

Please keep in mind that being accommodated in a hotel for your duration could mean that you may not be accommodated near other volunteers, as they will be in a homestay. Also, the cost of transportation to and from the volunteer placement and local hotel each day may be more expensive, so volunteers who choose to be accommodated in a local hotel (instead of a homestay) will need to budget accordingly.

Want your airport drop off organized for you for the end of your IVHQ Nepal trip? We can book an airport transfer for you from your volunteer accommodation back to Kathmandu International Airport (KTM) at an affordable price. 

Without knowing what the right price is to pay in Nepal for an airport transfer, you can easily get overcharged, or spend a long time trying to find a decent price. Enjoy a stress free ride back to the airport arranged by our Local Team. 

You’ll be picked up from your accommodation at your chosen time, and driven directly to Kathmandu International Airport (KTM) with plenty of time for your flight. If you are based in Chitwan or Pokhara, our Local Team will help arrange a bus transfer back for you the day before your flight is due to depart and a night of accommodation at local accommodation in Kathmandu. Your airport transfer will then be from the accommodation.

Important: the cost for the extra night of accommodation is not included in the price and you will be able to add an extra night of accommodation to your file via the 'Book add-ons, academic credit, and upgrades' section of your Pre-departure Checklist.
