From my experience, I grew mentally, physically and emotionally. While the program was so mentally challenging at first, from the shock of the different culture, to watching how happy the children are although they have almost nothing, this experience proved to be the best thing I ever did.

I grew as a person, realising that life isn’t all that bad, and that I am so privileged to have a full wardrobe, roof over my head, food everyday and more. The children were the most special people I have ever met, they rarely have anything but the clothes on their backs yet they are the most content and happy little kids ever.

I would do this experience over and over again and I wish I could tell my pre-program self that there is nothing to be afraid of and it will be the best thing she has ever done.

Any questions and queries I had were answered fully by the IVHQ team and Jessica Chadwick, who organized the group trip I attended. The local team was great and very helpful, especially on our orientation day.

Through this experience, I've gained confidence and friendship from people across the globe. Give it a go for at least two weeks as the longer you're at placement, the more you gain. If possible try speaking to people who will be there at the same time before arriving through social media, as seeing a friendly face on arrival makes you feel more comfortable quicker.

Also, I love how you’re immediately connected with people who can help. I went with Jess Chadwick, and she was amazing—so helpful, friendly, and easy to get along with. Having the chance to go with an IVHQ ambassador was such a fantastic idea. It made the whole experience much less intimidating, especially since I wasn’t confident about doing a trip like this on my own. It’s the perfect way to ease into an adventure like this!

Honestly, it’s really hard to put my experience into words. But if i had to, I’d define as: powerful, life changing and impactful. The bond I have created with the students and teachers at the day care is so special. There so much support from the moment you book until you get to placement. You get lots of support in country!

From volunteering to coming back to work at home, I have brought with me so many stories and experiences that my students at home have never heard of! I have also brought teaching strategies that I can use in my own professional practice.

The staff at the volunteer house were lovely and always willing to help or have a chat. This made my stay so much more enjoyable.

I would like to express my profound gratitude to the local team for their exceptional efforts. Their dedication and hard work throughout the entire process have been truly outstanding. The time and effort they have invested in the organisation surpasses all expectations.

In terms of my accommodation, both the house and the people living/working in the house have played a significant role in my experience during the project. The family I stayed with has been exceptionally warm and helpful, making me feel almost at home from the very first day. Their hospitality has been truly remarkable.

I would advise prospective participants to take the leap and embrace this opportunity. Throughout the entire program, you will never feel alone; there is always someone to support you. You will be immersed in a new culture, meet new people, and have enriching experiences, all while making a meaningful impact.
When selecting a volunteering organisation, I highly recommend IVHQ and the local team in Arusha.

It was amazing! I was prepared for something else and it ended up being better. Everything was very well organised and I felt so comfortable during my stay. I would definitely go on another volunteer program with IVHQ again, including Tanzania for a second time.
