Animal Care in

Pet shelters play an important role in Croatia, helping to rescue a high number of cats and dogs that are abandoned by their families for a number of reasons. Animal shelters are often overcrowded, and volunteers play an important role in giving time and love to animals, promoting their health and wellbeing and giving them the best chance of being adopted.

As a volunteer you’ll help with all manner of cleaning, feeding and playing with the dogs. Playing with the animals each day is considered a key part of your role, as it helps them to both get along with people and stay active. You can also help to develop online profiles for the animals, recording videos and building an ID book to help promote their adoption.

Creative Technologies in

Local NGOs in Croatia are increasingly focused on raising public awareness of environmental and social issues, and this can only be achieved by running successful awareness campaigns. As a volunteer on the Creative Technologies project, you’ll use your technical and marketing skills to create campaigns that encourage the local community to take action in their own surroundings.

Your volunteer experience can be catered for your expertise, and include web design, illustration, photography, videography, marketing and communications. Depending on the need for these skills, you could be helping NGOs that focus on women’s rights, gender equality, marine conservation, environmental issues or animal protection.

You’ll help to support these causes by creating infographics, brochures, posters, animations, videos, announcements and photos. Volunteers can also get direct experience helping your NGO with its core work, as your experience helping with their overall mission will help with the understanding of creating content.

Longer term volunteers may also have the opportunity to help renew the visual representation of the NGO in relation to their website, logos or other graphic items.

If you want to volunteer with an NGO in a particular field, please note this in your application and we’ll do our best to place you in that area. NGOs generally won’t have an abundance of resources available, so you should bring your own laptop, design software (Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent) and/or camera equipment. Volunteers will be required to have prior skills, so please ensure you include all relevant qualifications and/or experience in your application.

Marine Conservation in

If you think of the Croatian coast, chances are you’ll picture sparkling clear Mediterranean waters, beaches full of swimmers and an abundance of sea life. While this is often the case, it still requires plenty of work from dedicated marine conservationists to keep the water clean and reduce sea pollution.

As a Marine Conservation volunteer, you’ll help a local dive school to restore and maintain the natural state of the marine ecosystem around Croatia. You’ll be learning and using your scuba diving skills to make a real difference with ocean clean-ups and other activities to help the natural ecosystem be as pristine as possible.

Marine Conservation volunteering in Croatia with IVHQ

You’ll help to collect trash from the sea, log information on items collected, learn more about the marine ecosystem and how to protect it, and observe and identify fish. Depending on the time of the year, and after you earn your certification, you can also join a local scuba diving centre on underwater cleanup weekends in more remote areas around Split, which will further your impact in cleaning and protecting the sea and marine life in Croatia.

This project is open to beginners without any diving experience, though you will have to gain dive certification before engaging in any type of underwater conservation activities. Your Program Fee covers the cost of the required online and in-person training, full scuba equipment hire and volunteer supervision from an experienced dive instructor.

All volunteers complete the internationally-recognised SSI (Scuba Schools International) diving certifications. The specific certification you complete will depend on your diving experience and the length of your stay. Courses range from Scuba Diver through to Open Water Diver, and can include specialty courses such as Marine Ecology and Fish Identification.

Please note in your application if you have any existing dive certifications. If you do, you will need to send a copy of these along with your diving log book through to our local team in Croatia prior to your program starting. All volunteers are also required to provide a medical certificate which clears them for diving. You can choose to support this project for 1-4 weeks between the months of May to November.

Working with the local staff, you’ll help to organise and run activities such as beach walks, bicycle tours, animal farm projects, arts and crafts workshops, cooking and physical therapy.

Teaching in

Within Croatia, people from disadvantaged communities can struggle for adequate access to education. This leads to unequal opportunities for those born into these neighbourhoods, maintaining a class divide across the country. As a volunteer teacher, you’ll be contributing to increasing access to education for those who need it, helping to open up new possibilities for their future.

Volunteers help a local NGO that focuses on teaching different languages to locals. English is by far the most common language being taught but if you are fluent in another language, and there is interest from locals to learn it, then you may also be able to teach that too.

Teaching volunteer in Croatia with IVHQ

You’ll lead lessons independently for students of all ages and abilities, including adults who need advanced language skills for careers in tourism, children who have language difficulties or beginners who want to learn a new language.

This project is well suited to aspiring teachers who would like to extend their teaching skills abroad as well as any volunteers interested in a cultural exchange that involves teaching language to those in need.

As you will be volunteering with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you do not need to be a qualified or experienced teacher to participate on this project. However, we encourage you to come prepared by completing some relevant training. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognised TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

This project has a minimum duration requirement of 3 weeks.

Youth Support in

Croatian students who need extra educational and social support can find it at after school centres that exist to help those from underprivileged backgrounds. Volunteers are needed to help these centres provide the level of care they strive for as important developmental platforms.

As a Youth Support volunteer, you’ll act as a positive role model for students aged between 7-18 years old. You can do help with homework, organising activities and sports, and assist with any general work that needs to be done at the centre. You’ll also help to teach English in an informal way, mostly by simply interacting with the young people at the centre. Learning English is seen as a valuable skill, but it is often one of these students’ biggest difficulties.

Youth Support volunteer in Croatia with IVHQ

The main objective of the Youth Support project is to provide a much-needed safe place for young people to go after school. International volunteers are seen as an important part of the education they can provide, as those who use the centres often haven’t encountered different cultures and values before. This is an opportunity for you to bring new perspectives and creativity, helping to mentor young people and heighten their expectations for themselves.

This project is well suited to volunteers who are passionate about working with young people to support their education and help them to develop their interests and life ambitions. You’ll work closely alongside local staff and other volunteers to promote better outcomes for youth.

This project has a minimum duration requirement of 2 weeks and all volunteers are required to provide a recent medical certificate verifying they are fit to work with children.
