Construction and Renovation in

Many schools in Fiji don’t have resources to upgrade or maintain their facilities, and need help to make regular improvements. Volunteers help to overcome these funding shortages by helping with renovation projects in classrooms, libraries and resource centres.

You’ll be working under the guidance of a local project coordinator, helping with building, demolition, painting, cleaning, landscaping and repairs. The exact nature of your volunteering will depend on the ongoing project at the time, as well as the local priorities.

This project is suitable for all volunteers who are interested in getting their hands dirty and who are generally enthusiastic about physical work. As you’ll be volunteering alongside local staff, you don’t need any previous building experience.

Volunteers typically work for three hours each day, and have the rest of the day to either join another volunteer placement or enjoy free time.

Please note, the Construction and Renovation project has an extra cost of US$50 (approximately £42) per week for extra supervision, materials and logistics. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply. If you choose to join the Introduction Week, the weekly surcharge will start on your second week.

Kindergarten in

Children in Fiji often grow up without luxuries, but despite this are extremely happy and playful. As a result, local kindergartens are busy and lively places, with lots of energy. Volunteers are extremely helpful in being able to target this energy in lessons and constructive activities to help the early development of young children.

As a volunteer in kindergartens, you’ll help local teachers with informal lessons and confidence building for children aged 4 and 5. You’ll provide valuable exposure to English, which is beneficial for children’s later learning, and use your creativity to carry out fun and educational activities.

Volunteers work in the morning from 9am to 12 noon. In the afternoon, you can either continue to teach at the Kindergarten, helping with the Teaching or Sports Education projects or plan your lessons for the following day.

The Kindergarten project is ideal for volunteers who are energetic and love working with children. All volunteers have the support of local staff, who can guide you in your tasks and activities.

Kindergartens in Fiji do close over holidays (typically April, August, November through January) and for other local occasions, but during these times you can help on a day camp for local children while the schools are closed. It’s important to be flexible in your approach, and appreciate that you may even have days off from time to time.

Sports Education in

Sport is an integral part of growing up in Fiji, where young people are active and lively, and love to get outside and play. As a volunteer, you’ll help to deliver sport and lessons that cater to every ability, creating a fun and healthy environment.

You’ll be based either on after school sports programs or in a local elementary school. This placement depends on your experience and time on the program - volunteers with a coaching or sports qualification, who are in Fiji for four weeks or more will be placed in schools, and volunteers who are staying for less than four weeks or don’t have sporting qualifications will help on after school tutorials.

When you volunteer in schools in Fiji, you’ll assist local staff in structured physical education classes, playing games and helping to develop skills and understanding, according to the local curriculum.

Sports Education volunteer in Fiji with IVHQ

On after school tutorials, your role is simply to play games. You’ll encourage fair play and teamwork, passively helping local school children to be active and improve their skills.

This project can be unstructured, so you’ll need to be flexible and be willing to teach their choice of sports/activities with limited equipment available. The main sports the children play are soccer, netball, rugby and volleyball, however you’re welcome to introduce a sport from your home.

You’ll need to be energetic and able to keep up with excitable children who enjoy being active. The project is best suited to volunteers who have some experience in sport, though this is not a requirement.

During school exams or holidays, all volunteers will be placed in either the Construction and Renovation project, Kindergarten project or participate in ‘Kids Club’. On the ‘Kids Club’ you can expect to teach sport education on Fridays and the remainder will be general teaching according to the theme of the week, such as healthy living.

Teaching in

Class sizes in Fijian schools are large, with up to 50 children per teacher, so holding inclusive lessons where each student gets equal benefit can be challenging. Volunteer teachers add great benefit in enabling education to be targeted to students of different abilities.

As a Teaching volunteer, you’ll be placed in either a local school or on an after school teaching tutorial. This placement depends on your teaching experience and time on the program - qualified teachers who are in Fiji for four weeks or more will be placed in schools, and volunteers who are staying for less than four weeks or don’t have teaching qualifications will help on after school tutorials.

Volunteers in schools will follow the local curriculum, helping with students aged between 6-16. You can either assist a local teacher or lead the class independently, but in both instances you’re encouraged to be creative in planning and executing your lessons in a lively and interesting manner.

Teaching volunteer in Fiji with IVHQ

The after school tutorials have a lot more freedom, as they’re considered supplementary lessons that don’t need to follow a set curriculum. They’re designed to be fun and interactive, and should reinforce what’s being learnt at school. It requires some time to plan lessons each day, and the local team can help you with this. Because you’ll have time free in the morning, you can choose to assist on either the Kindergarten or Construction and Renovation projects.

During school exams and holidays (typically April, July, and August through to January), all volunteers will be placed on after school tutorials. Additionally, occasional events like graduation, festivals and other school activities may mean students have time off, so volunteers aren’t required. This is a normal part of the education system in Fiji and you’ll need to be flexible in accepting free time yourself.

We encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course, especially if you want to volunteer in schools. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognised TEFL certification at a discounted rate.
