I loved my project - it was the perfect fit! I made wonderful friends and connections with everyone. Being one of the youngest volunteers on my placement, it brought me a new sense of maturity. I'm extremely grateful for the personal and emotional growth that this project gave back to me. I can't wait to go back!

Costa Rica coastal and beach areas must manage ongoing problems with abandoned and stray dogs and cats. Due to the heat and tropical conditions, these animals often suffer from poor health, injuries, and lack of proper nutrition. Volunteers on the Animal Care project in Manuel Antonio assist in local veterinary clinics and animal welfare organizations that nurse these animals back to health, and help them get adopted into new, loving homes.

Childcare in

After school childcare initiatives in Manuel Antonio are in high demand from many children who’ve been sadly abandoned by their families. They are generally taken in by other relatives who work, so it can mean time outside of school is unstructured and lonely.

By volunteering with children, you can not only supplement their education and provide fun activities, but also give them support and nurturing they would not otherwise have.

Volunteer tasks will vary, but generally includes organising games, activities, hygiene education, teaching English, cleaning and assisting the local staff at the project site. There is plenty of opportunities for initiative, and it can often be that volunteers have a big role to play in helping to run the centers.

Childcare in

Because many Costa Rican schools are overcrowded, students often only have lessons for half a day. As a way of keeping them occupied for the rest of the day, community centers help to offer further education and games, helping to provide meaningful activities instead of leaving them to their own devices. Childcare volunteers can go a long way to supplementing local staff efforts, as it can be a very busy time catering for many children.

You’ll be volunteering with children from a range of ages up until 13 years old. Your role is to help local staff in a hands-on role in providing much-needed support in general activities. Much of the time is spent outside, as classrooms are often small and crowded.

Childcare volunteer in Costa Rica with IVHQ

Your tasks can include working one-on-one with the children, organising games and activities, providing education around hygiene and assisting with homework. The majority of the volunteer work is focused on working with children from low income and immigrant communities in Costa Rica that are facing social issues in regards to poverty, homelessness, and unemployment.

You aren’t required to have experience in childcare or education to take part in this project, as you will be working closely alongside local placement staff.

Healthcare in

Manuel Antonio is a picturesque national park that offers the chance to enjoy nature’s spoils outside your medical volunteering. Situated on the Pacific Coast, you can enjoy white sand beaches and bush trails in your time off.

The Healthcare volunteer program is based in community care facilities such as nursing homes and assisted living homes. The healthcare system in Costa Rica is relatively well developed, however local staff work hard and appreciate the assistance of volunteers.

Volunteers should expect to be acting in a shadowing or assisting role alongside local staff. You can help with distributing medication, rehabilitation exercises, feeding, bathing and keeping patients company. Qualified professionals who speak Spanish are more likely to have hands-on duties in assisting with check-ups, triage, taking vitals and preparing medical equipment. There is a genuine need for volunteer physical therapists, particularly in helping in elderly care facilities.

Healthcare volunteer in Manuel Antonio - Costa Rica with IVHQ

Please keep in mind that local regulations are likely to prevent independent medical volunteer work. Your help is often required for tasks such as helping people go for a walk, which requires staff members but is often not considered a priority task for doctors and nurses.

This project is well suited to volunteers currently working towards a healthcare degree and who have practical or shadowing experience. Your volunteer tasks will be determined by your level of training, Spanish language level, ability to take initiative and your program duration. Longer term volunteers are more likely to have more hands-on roles.

Special Needs Care in

A sad reality of living with special needs in Costa Rica is many people are abandoned by their families, who can’t or won’t give them the care they need. Many of these people live together in homes that are run by a few staff that have a high reliance on volunteers to assist with day-to-day tasks.

By volunteering with disabled people, you can help to increase the care and education they receive. You can help to make a genuine difference to their lives by bringing a caring attitude and desire to help them in community facilities and homes.

Volunteer English teachers can assist in classrooms, community centers and even family homes. Students are mostly adults, with some children too.

Help with in-demand English lessons for children and adults, enabling more locals to get access to the expertise of a fluent English speaker.

Suited to:

Teaching English in

English is increasingly being seen as a universal language across Latin America, offering fluent speakers better opportunities in a range of sectors. However, low-income communities don’t have good access to English lessons. As a volunteer English teacher, you’ll help to teach the language in those communities where fluent English tutors are rare.

Teaching happens in schools and community centers, with students that range in age from children to adults. Because of the high demand for English lessons, students are generally eager to learn. This also means there is a shortage of teachers, and your expertise as a fluent speaker is best used as a lead teacher.

Teaching volunteer in Costa Rica with IVHQ

Teaching English volunteers work with students in daily classes. It’s expected you’ll spend further time preparing lessons outside class time, and you’ll have a general syllabus and the guidance of local staff to assist you in this.

You aren’t required to have teaching experience to participate on this project as you will be provided assistance from the local team and placement staff. You can expect to be running classes independently, so we recommended completing a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course before traveling to Costa Rica if you don’t have prior teaching experience. Please note that schools in Costa Rica are closed from the third week of December until the second week of February and there is a two week holiday beginning on the first week of July. Any time that schools are closed, Teaching English volunteers usually teach in precarios (urban slums), community centers or churches.

Turtle Conservation in

While turtles are seen as stunning creatures around the world, the sad reality is many of them are critically endangered. Costa Rica is home to a range of turtle species, including the endangered Leatherback, Green, Olive Ridley and Hawksbill. While they produce thousands of hatchlings, only a few survive to reach adulthood.

By volunteering with turtles, protecting these spectacular species will be at the heart of all your work. You’ll be based on either the Nicoya Peninsula or the Caribbean Coast. Your role on the project will vary according to the time of year, but you’ll work a variety of day and night shifts, helping with beach patrols, building hatcheries to protect eggs from predators, beach cleaning, counting and tagging sea turtles, locating nesting females, collecting eggs and replanting mangroves. Nesting does not occur year-round.

This project is well suited to hard-working individuals who love nature, the marine environment and being part of rewarding volunteer work within a coastal setting.

Please note that this project has a minimum duration of 2 weeks and has an extra cost of US$75 (approximately £59) per week for the supervision, materials and logistics involved. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.
