I stayed in Romania for two months with the special needs program. It's hard to put my experience into words, but to start it was incredible, enlightening, and life changing. The people I met, the staff and children I worked with - I'll truly never forget them. Romania is beautiful country and fairly undiscovered by hoards of tourists so it's a lot of fun to travel around.

After School Support in

Many Romanian children from disadvantaged backgrounds require extra support once school finishes. These children typically lack adequate care and attention and are underperforming at school. The After School Support project aims to provide these children with a safe environment to continue learning and playing fun educational games.

As a volunteer, you’ll be based on after school programs helping students with their homework, informal English lessons, playing games and encouraging teamwork and collaboration where possible. By spending time with these children you’ll not only be helping them with their academic studies but also enhancing their self-esteem, confidence and motivation to better their lives.

This is an open project with little structure, and volunteers are encouraged to bring new games and activity ideas for when the children have completed their homework. If you are creative, patient and proactive, this project is for you.

The After School Support Project is not available during the summer holidays. Those looking to volunteer during summer holiday dates can expect to be placed on the Summer Camp project. During other holidays, project work will be during the day, instead of after school. In both instances, the nature of volunteer work will remain the same.

Animal Care in

Local dog shelters are important institutions for both animals and locals in Romania, keeping dogs off the street and providing them with their daily basics with the hope of getting re-homed. Animals are commonly mistreated or abandoned, and volunteers are needed to help local staff deal to give the required attention to all the dogs at the shelter.

Volunteers help to protect the animals, providing companionship, medical treatment and opportunities for play. You’ll be responsible for brushing the dogs, providing basic obedience training, cleaning cages, assisting with feeding and playing, maintaining the shelter grounds and occasionally walking them. A key aspect of your role is to provide positive social experiences for the dogs so they’re ready to be adopted.

Depending on your program duration, you may also be able to assist with some small construction projects at the shelter, photography, administration and vaccination campaigns in the community. All dogs are fully vaccinated.

The shelter in Miercurea Ciuc is in better condition than many other Romanian shelters, but is different to Western European standards, so you’ll need to be prepared for this. There are hundreds of dogs and the shelter tends to get quite muddy, so you’ll also need to dress accordingly.

It’s important to note that volunteers participating from October until February need to be prepared for very cold conditions, as most project work is based outdoors. You can expect a lot of snow and for the terrain to be muddy.

Use your experience in special needs support to assist in centers for disabled children and adults. Help to run lessons and games, using your initiative and creativity to overcome a lack of resources.

Special Needs Support in

Many families in Romania are unable to properly care for family members with disabilities, as there is a strong social stigma and a lack of government support available. As a volunteer on the Special Needs Care project, you’ll help to bridge that care gap by motivating and enriching the lives of children and adults living with personal challenges.

You’ll be based in special need centres, helping to plan and run games and educational activities for people with a range of mental and physical disabilities. This is a specialised placement for those with expertise in caring for the disabled, and also includes the chance for qualified volunteers to provide therapy and rehabilitation.

Special Needs Support volunteer in Romania with IVHQ

Volunteering with the disabled is a challenging project that is well suited to patient and caring individuals. You’ll need strong organisational skills and the ability to improvise, as there aren’t many resources available for you to use. However, the children and adults are incredibly enthusiastic and you will receive big smiles in exchange for your time.

Volunteers wishing to take part for less than 4 weeks need to have completed at least one year of relevant special needs support or have appropriate training. If you don’t have previous experience, you’ll need to volunteer on the project for at least 4 weeks. This is to ensure you have enough time to understand your role and make a positive difference as a volunteer.

Please note, this project is closed in August due to the school holidays. If your duration crosses into this period you will be transferred to a different project. There is also a minimum duration requirement of 2 weeks.

A world of excitement awaits on Summer Camps for children and teenagers, helping to organise and run fun activities and lessons. Open during the local holidays between June - September.

Summer Camp in

Summer camps can be unforgettable experiences for young people, providing a whole range of fun activities and social time in a way that cannot be replicated elsewhere. In Romania, summer holidays are three months long and young people, especially those from the villages, have little to keep themselves occupied. These camps are designed to keep children engaged and having fun during their holiday breaks.

Volunteers help a team of organisers to plan and run English-themed summer camps for young people who range in age from 6-15. You’re encouraged to use your passion for things like music, art, sport and drama to create exciting and inspiring programs to help to engage and motivate those on the camp to learn English.

This is a hugely rewarding project, and you can expect plenty of laughter, fun, new friendships and the satisfaction of creating truly memorable summers for locals.

You don’t need to have any experience in teaching or working with children to participate on this project, as you’ll be working with the support of a local camp facilitator who will provide direction and guidance.

This project is open from mid-June to mid-September each year.

Help to run a community greenhouse, producing organic fruit and vegetables to feed people in need.

Sustainable Agriculture in

Organic farming is increasingly being seen as the best way to produce fresh fruit and vegetables around the world. By avoiding the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers, conventional agriculture can reduce its carbon footprint, become more sustainable and provide communities with better, more nutritious food.

As a Sustainable Agriculture volunteer, you’ll have a crucial role in the upkeep of a local garden and greenhouse that provides fruit and vegetables for people in need. To uphold traditional Romanian agricultural practices, you’ll help to plant a variety of local seeds, utilise homemade solar panels, create eggshell powder and use wood ash to add nutrients back into the soil, as well as collect rain water to sustain the garden.

Sustainable Agriculture volunteer in Romania with IVHQ

The specific tasks you’ll undertake will depend on the time of year. You can help a range of areas including planting, harvesting vegetables, cultivating flowers, composting and other maintenance work. It’s important you’re prepared to help out where the need is greatest at the time as this is how tasks are assigned. The project is closed from November to February, as the winter temperatures are too cold for meaningful volunteer work.

You’re encouraged to use innovation and sustainable practices to try out new techniques. As an example, previous volunteers have created an active composting system, installed a drip irrigation system and built a solar panel using recycled cans.

While you’re volunteering, you may also be able to spend time with other community causes, including local conservation-focused NGOs, in their efforts toward environmental preservation. This can include hay meadow mowing, river clean-ups as well as monitoring and protecting endangered flora and fauna. This kind of work usually comes in the form of one-off events, which the local team can facilitate with you.

Teaching English in

Romanian students don’t often come into contact with native English-speaking teachers, but when they do they can be a real source of knowledge and inspiration to their studies. Volunteers can provide this spark in local schools around Miercurea Ciuc, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Volunteer teachers are valued assistants to local teachers, or can teach independently, helping in all aspects of schooling, with an emphasis on English language lessons. Your aim is to help stimulate an interest in learning English and to support teachers to create engaging and creative lesson plans.

Teaching volunteer in Romania with IVHQ

Students can range from 6-16 years old. This project is ideal for volunteers who want to teach in a structured environment, and as such is a good introduction to a teaching career.

As you will work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to participate. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognised TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

The Teaching project isn’t available during the summer holidays, from June to September, but if you want to travel in that time, you can volunteer on the Summer Camp project. If your project runs during other school holidays, then you can also expect to be involved in holiday activities.

If your project is within two weeks of the start or end of the summer vacation, you should expect schooling to be run differently to normal, as schools are either winding down or starting up for the school year. These are extremely busy periods in the school calendar and very little formal teaching occurs. This time may also also involve helping with after school programs.
