Andean Immersion in

This unique project is very different from the other projects offered on the Cusco program. You will be volunteering in a small rural village in the Andes Mountains 90 minutes from Cusco, assisting families with all aspects of daily life. These are families that get great personal benefit from having your assistance, and offer an immersive volunteer experience in return.

You’ll live with a Quechua-speaking family, where the pace of life is slower and the standard of living is very basic. Often these families will speak no English, but some Spanish, so you should come prepared with at least basic Spanish language.

Andean Immersion volunteer in Cusco, Peru with IVHQ

The type of work you’ll be doing varies greatly according to the needs of each family - it could be anything from helping with physical agricultural or construction work to more domestic chores and helping to weave fabrics to sell. Your help will make the family more efficient, both economically and around the house.

Immersion volunteers should come prepared for basic but comfortable living conditions. There is running water, though it’s not heated, limited electricity and no internet. You’ll eat traditional food and live day to day life the way locals do.

Please note, the Andean Immersion project has an extra cost of US$75 (approximately £65) per week for extra supervision, materials and logistics. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.

    Animal Care in

Animal Care volunteers in Cusco can assist either a local dog shelter or a small zoo, which operates as a rescue center. In both instances, the care they are able to provide for animals is greatly increased by the number of people they have available.

Volunteers at the dog shelter assist local staff to care for and entertain abandoned dogs, with the aim of having them be rehoused. Your time is spent helping with feeding, playing and cleaning both animals and the shelter itself. Most of these dogs have been rescued from the streets and all are vaccinated.

The zoo placement is administered by a biology faculty at the local university, and accepts exotic-type animals that have been either harmed by humans, or abandoned by people they’ve been dependent on. Animals can include eagles, monkeys, felines, bears, llamas, deer, colorful birds and turtles. You’ll focus on all aspects of animal care and also help with assisting logistical tasks such as journal keeping.

We ask that you state your placement preference when you apply to volunteer with animals in Cusco. However, as placements are allocated based on need, your preferred option cannot always be guaranteed.

      Animal Care in

Thousands of stray dogs call the streets of Lima home, especially in areas that are faced with poverty. Many people have pet dogs, but struggle for access to sterilisation programs, and when dogs fall pregnant they are often abandoned as the family can’t afford to provide for a litter of pups.

Dog shelters are seen as important institutions to help manage street dogs that commonly suffer from hunger, infection and injuries, however they are not funded and rely on the help of volunteers to operate.

Volunteers assist in the daily running of non-profit dog shelters, which provide a loving home to many dogs that would otherwise be on the street. Tasks include dog walking, bathing, feeding, playing games, administering vitamins, cleaning and general upkeep of the shelter. You can also help with adoption campaigns to help give dogs a permanent home and free up shelter space for other dogs.

This project is well suited to volunteers who love dogs and are willing to help out in a range of tasks with the ultimate goal of having them be rehoused. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a guardian.

Volunteers work in community centres, schools and kindergartens. Your duties will vary, but will generally involve providing individual attention, playing with children, organising games and activities, assisting with homework, English classes and educating children about hygiene.

Families in underprivileged communities around Lima often live in makeshift homes that they can’t afford to make much-needed improvements to. Similarly, community buildings that are home to valuable services are often in need of basic maintenance that, when not done, makes them less desirable for locals to use.

The volunteer workforce can play a big part in bringing these buildings up to a good standard for the people that use them that live in them. You can assist to improve roofing, flooring, electricity, plumbing, painting, gardening or any other repair work that’s required.

The scope of the project you’ll assist with will vary depending on the need in the community and feasibility of completing tasks, based on the number of volunteers available. You don’t need any building or renovation experience to participate, but if you have relevant skills, then if you list them on your application then we can ensure you’ll be best utilised to make a difference.

Volunteers during busy season (May - August) generally have the opportunity to assist with more large scale projects, with September and October involving continued renovation and beautification activities.

Please note, the Construction and Renovation project is only available from May through until the end of October. Holiday Experience in

For those wanting a special and unique way to volunteer over Christmas, the Holiday Experience provides the opportunity to participate in a variety of projects and activities in the local community. The project was designed by our local team as an alternative to the standard projects which have frequent public holiday closures over the Christmas and New Year period.

Volunteers on the Holiday Experience project assist in a range of tasks, such as coordinating holiday parties for underprivileged children and the elderly, assisting in the daily life and work of a nearby Andean village (such as cooking, weaving, farming) and renovating a local community center. With such a range of tasks at hand, you’ll need to be open to contributing wherever your help is required.

Clinics and hospitals for low income families in Cusco tend to be underfunded and understaffed. As a result, medical volunteers play an important role in assisting local nurses and doctors in a range of specialist departments, while also learning about the healthcare system in Cusco.

This is an excellent project for those who want to specialise in a certain medical field. You’re able to state a preference for the department you’d like to volunteer in; including pediatrics, pharmacy, psychology, geriatrics, triage or dentistry. While your preference will be a strong factor in allocating your placement, it does not guarantee it.

Volunteers can assist in a range of tasks depending on your prior experience. Pre-medical and lesser experienced students are able to assist local staff in routine jobs, while students in your third year of study or above, or qualified medical professionals are able to help with more hands-on tasks. It’s important you have realistic expectations with regard to the activities you’ll be doing.

Please note, at a minimum, volunteers need to be training and have clinical experience in a medical setting. You need to bring evidence of your education with you to Cusco. Your ability to speak Spanish will also be a factor in your placement. Basic Spanish is recommended but a higher level is preferred, and those with better Spanish are more likely to have more hands-on roles.

The Medical project has an extra cost of US$75 (approximately £65) per week for extra supervision, materials and logistics. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.

Many people in Peru live in poverty, which makes access to healthcare and other basic services difficult. However, daily medical campaigns aim to widen the reach of public health in Lima, and volunteers play an important role in making that happen.

Medical volunteers can help local schools with children’s health evaluations, health prevention talks, basic preventive checkups in local markets and supporting local government health campaigns. If you’re someone who has an interest in international healthcare systems in vulnerable communities, this project is a great choice for you.

As the closest city to Machu Picchu, Cusco is the tourism capital of South America and many local children will tell you that they want to be tourist guides when they grow up. They know this dream requires a high level of English and are enthusiastic about learning the language. As tourism forms an integral part of the local economy, the ability to speak English gives locals a genuine opportunity to support themselves and find work.

Having fluent and native speakers is a huge bonus for students, as it gives them an authority to test their language skills and ask questions.

Volunteer English teachers are placed in local schools on the outskirts of Lima, where you’ll lead English lessons for local children who range in age and language ability.
