Words cannot describe how unbelievably amazing my experience was! I spent my time between the local clinic and helping with the children at the school. The people and children I met have changed me, they were the most welcoming people you could meet. The IVHQ team were an amazing team.

Agriculture in

Agriculture is a central source of food in Ghana, and this project aims to be a sustainable food provider for IVHQ’s Childcare volunteer placements. If you’re someone who’s passionate about sustainability and is looking for some hands-on volunteer work, this project will be perfect for you.

As an Agriculture volunteer, you’ll be based on local farms, helping with both crop (corn, eggplants, capsicums and palms) and animal farming (pigs, rabbits, goats, chickens). You’ll be involved in clearing and developing land for crops, fertilising, planting, nurturing, teaching farming techniques to locals, fencing, and assisting with purchasing, moving and caring for stock.

Agriculture volunteer in Ghana with IVHQ

Your work will depend on the season and your exact placement, which will be determined based on the needs of the local community. You aren’t required to have previous agricultural experience to participate on this project, but you should come expecting physical work. More experienced volunteers may be able to assist in developing the project and teaching new techniques to locals, helping them to farm their crops and animals more effectively.

Work on the Agriculture project usually stops during the hottest period of the day, and during this time you can assist with teaching in local schools to ensure you have sufficient volunteer work.

Please note, resources and machinery are extremely limited on this project and most work is labour intensive. You should bring a flashlight, a lightweight scarf for sun protection, a hat, insect repellent, gloves, working boots and a water bottle.

This project has an extra cost of US$49 (approximately £41) per week for extra supervision, materials and logistics. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply.

Childcare in

Rural communities in Ghana often don’t have access to proper childcare facilities, and volunteers on the Childcare project can provide education, care and attention to children from low-income families. The aim of this project is to ensure these children are given the best possible opportunities and are supported in their health and learning. This is done in an informal manner, with less classroom time and more support outside lessons.

Volunteers on this project contribute to the community by helping with food preparation and meal distribution, ensuring children receive proper meals each day. Work also involves providing care and entertainment by assisting with homework, providing exposure to casual English language and playing games after school. There may also be the opportunity to introduce your own educational activities and lessons.

You’re welcome to bring along books, pencils, basic first aid supplies and musical instruments to help your volunteering. These supplies can generally be purchased in Ghana, which also supports the local economy.

This project is well suited to volunteers with a warm and caring nature, who love working with children and are passionate about supporting early childhood development.

Please note the school year is broken up into three terms, with four week breaks in between. Because you generally work with children in schools, if you apply for the Childcare project during holiday breaks, it may be unavailable. During these times, you’re able to work with school directors and placement staff on school holiday workshops.

Healthcare Outreach and Education in

For those who really want to take healthcare to as many people as possible, this is the project for you. The Healthcare Outreach and Education project is a special one week project that offers volunteers a chance to contribute to the health and wellbeing of Ghanaian people living in rural areas.

As a Healthcare Outreach volunteer, you’ll spend the week visiting rural communities where healthcare is inaccessible for many people, helping with malaria testing and treatment, as well as education around sexual health, hygiene and nutrition.

Healthcare Outreach and Education volunteer in Ghana with IVHQ

Your tasks can include community education and prevention and malaria testing. If you’re trained in a particular medical specialty, such as dentistry, it may be possible for you to do a specialised outreach.

As the project focuses on malaria testing as well as education and prevention, you do not need to have any medical training or qualifications in order to participate, though volunteers with professional experience can use their expertise. All volunteers will receive training and guidance in administering malaria tests.

This project is well suited to volunteers who are passionate about healthcare, who are adaptable and open to learning new things. It’s also open for those who don’t have formal medical training.

The project begins on the 15th of each month and runs for one week. The program fee of US$520 for the week covers accommodation, three meals a day, basic first aid supplies, malaria testing kits, malaria medication, transport and supervision.

For alternative medical volunteering opportunities in Ghana that are suitable for pre-med and pre-nursing students, as well as healthcare students and professionals - see our Medical volunteer project in Ghana.

Medical in

The healthcare system in Ghana is considered fairly good in relation to other African countries, however there is still considerable need for volunteer assistance. Once you leave the major cities, the standard of healthcare drops considerably and there is a real shortage of trained medical professionals to work in these communities and provide basic healthcare services.

When volunteering on the Medical project in Ghana, you can help in small clinics in under-resourced, rural areas for two days a week, and with mobile wound care outreach for the remaining three days. You should expect to be working with limited resources, and understand that the healthcare environment you’re volunteering in will be different to what you’re used to.

Medical volunteer in Ghana with IVHQ

Volunteer duties will depend on your experience and how much time you’re spending on your program. Longer term and qualified volunteers are more likely to have hands-on tasks, though this should not be expected. Initially at least, your tasks are likely to be mostly observational or administrative. Outreach clinics are more hands-on than clinic-based volunteering.

This project is well suited to pre-med and medical students, as well as qualified healthcare professionals with an interest in expanding their global medical perspective and gaining first-hand experience in a new healthcare medical environment.

This project is open to qualified medical or nursing professionals as well as volunteers who have completed at least two years of medical or nursing training. You will need to provide a copy of your qualifications, or a letter and transcript from your school to the local team in Ghana on arrival. Midwives are also able to work within one of our rural clinics on this project.

A US$49 (approximately £41) per week surcharge applies to cover additional transportation and materials required.

For alternative healthcare volunteering opportunities in Ghana that are suitable for students as well as healthcare professionals, see our Healthcare Outreach and Education project in Ghana.

Sports Teaching in

There’s a huge amount of enthusiasm for sport in Ghana, and by helping to provide structure around games in schools, fun-loving volunteers can bring a whole lot of joy to students.

As a Sports Teaching volunteer, you’ll be based in schools, helping to develop the interest in physical education and increase students’ skills in a range of sports. It also helps to encourage discipline, and enhances alertness and coordination among the students you’ll be working with. Volunteers help to structure games before and after school.

Sports Teaching volunteer in Ghana with IVHQ

One of the big aims for volunteers is just to help kids have fun. Sport has the added benefit as a platform to teach students about teamwork, bringing the best out of the players, and developing their self-confidence. Football/soccer is a popular sport in Ghana, but you’re also encouraged to introduce new sports from home. To teach these sports, you may need to bring equipment with you, as it may not be available for purchase in Ghana.

This project is well suited to individuals with a love of sport and real enthusiasm for supporting youth development and working with young people. Previous teaching experience isn’t required, but you may also be required to teach other classes, such as math, English, science, geography and history, as sport is usually taught in the outside school hours.

Please keep in mind that during the school holidays, you’ll work on school holiday workshops that will be created by the school directors, placement staff and other volunteers.

Teaching English in

Although Ghana is officially an English-speaking country, teacher shortages mean school children often don’t have the best opportunities to learn the language. Native and fluent English speakers bring authority and expertise to these lessons, which make a huge difference to the learning ability of students.

Volunteers on the Teaching project work in rural communities, either teaching solo or assisting local teachers. As well as teaching English and other typical lesson topics, music, math, geography and arts are also incorporated into the syllabus, and as a volunteer, you can bring your own resources to assist with these lessons.

Teaching volunteer in Ghana with IVHQ

This project is ideal for volunteers who are teachers, aspiring to become a teacher or simply interested in education.

Volunteers will have the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, so don’t need to be qualified or experienced as a teacher to participate. However, volunteers are encouraged to come prepared by completing some relevant training, such as a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognised TEFL certification at a discounted rate.

Please note the school year is broken up into three terms, with four week breaks in between. Because volunteers assist children in schools, if you apply for the Teaching project during these holiday breaks, it will be unavailable.
