A sad reality of living with special needs in Costa Rica is many people are abandoned by their families, who can’t or won’t give them the care they need. Many of these people live together in homes that are run by a few staff that have a high reliance on volunteers to assist with day-to-day tasks.
By volunteering with disabled people, you can help to increase the care and education they receive. You can help to make a genuine difference to their lives by bringing a caring attitude and desire to help them in community facilities and homes.
You’ll be helping local staff with one-on-one tasks, sensory activities, games and general care. There is a strong need for volunteer physical therapists on this project. Often it’s as simple as helping someone go for a walk outside, which can be hard to manage in a short-staffed environment.
This project is well suited to caring and energetic individuals who are passionate about contributing to the development those with intellectual and physical challenges and increasing inclusiveness for people living with special needs. You’re encouraged to bring your own creativity and ideas to this project, and are welcome to host activities in areas like gardening and baking.
As you will be working closely with the local placement staff, you aren’t required to have previous experience with people with special needs.Apply now
