The general level of education in Cambodia is considerably lower than other countries, leading to a high level of poverty and unemployment, and many families not being able to afford an education. As a volunteer English teacher in Cambodia, you’ll play an important role in helping increase opportunities for locals to learn the English language, which is a requirement for employment in many industries.
You’ll be placed in primary schools or after school education centers, assisting local staff in lessons for students who range in age from 5-16 years old. While your focus will be on teaching English, you may also help with IT, math and art tuition if required.
This project is well suited to creative-thinking volunteers who are self driven. It’s expected you’ll spend some time each day preparing your lessons, and the longer you spend on the project, the more responsibility you may be given.
If you want to volunteer for less than 4 weeks, you will be placed in Siem Reap. Those staying longer than 4 weeks will volunteer in Phnom Penh.
As volunteers work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teachers to participate, however we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.
