The healthcare system in Cambodia is quite different to those in other parts of the world, which means if offers a great learning experience for Medical volunteers. You can spend time in a pediatric hospital assisting and learning from local staff as they carry out their routine duties.
You’ll be based in Phnom Penh where your role will be mostly observational, though volunteers who stay longer on the program are more likely to have hands-on tasks. Regardless, you’ll get a much greater understanding of the differences between healthcare in a developing country and your own as you develop your medical knowledge by rubbing shoulders with local professionals.
This project is well suited to volunteers with medical skills, who are interested in experiencing a new culture and working environment.
Volunteers need to be in medical school, have completed at least three years of study and have some experience in pediatrics. You need to provide a resume and a recommendation letter from your university upon being registered for the program. You also need to bring your own scrubs or lab coat and stethoscope.
This project has a minimum duration of 3 weeks and a maximum duration of 12 weeks. Applications must be submitted at least 6 weeks before your chosen start date.
There is an initial surcharge of US$200 for the first month and then US$100 for each month thereafter to cover supervision and support from the hospital staff. See the Cambodia fees tab for a full breakdown of prices.
