This program is ideal for:

Volunteers who are passionate about animals and animal rights. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about animal welfare in a different country while being part of a team that shares the same passion as you.

Project details

Love farm animals and cats and want to volunteer in Animal Care in Croatia? International Volunteer HQ’s Animal Care Program empowers volunteers to support a rural animal sanctuary in Brač and a dedicated cat shelter in Žrnovnica, just outside Split.

Volunteers gain hands-on experience caring for domestic and farm animals that have been rescued from neglect, abuse, or abandonment. By contributing time, energy, and compassion, you help ensure these animals receive the daily care, rehabilitation, and socialization they need to live safely and, where possible, find loving homes.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

Animal Care volunteers support two meaningful placements: a large Animal Sanctuary and a Cat Shelter focused exclusively on feline rescue and welfare. The level of care these animals receive depends greatly on volunteer support. Your contribution directly improves their quality of life and helps local teams continue their vital rescue work.

Volunteers are welcome to indicate their placement preference in their application, depending on their experience, interests, and passions. This helps us better understand what suits you best, and our local team will do their best to accommodate your preference.

Animal Sanctuary – Brač Island

Located on the beautiful island just outside Split (Brač), the Animal Sanctuary provides a safe, natural, and humane environment for animals rescued from across Croatia. Many of the animals have experienced neglect or abandonment and now rely on consistent care and attention.

The sanctuary is home to donkeys, horses, ponies, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits and cats.

As a volunteer, you will work alongside a team of passionate animal lovers and assist with all aspects of daily animal care. Tasks may include:

  • Feeding animals and preparing food
  • Cleaning and maintaining pens, stables, and enclosures
  • Grooming and brushing animals
  • Assisting with basic health monitoring (weighing, observing behavior)
  • Providing companionship and socialization
  • Supporting small construction or maintenance projects (fencing, shelters, green areas)
  • Taking photos and videos to support adoption promotion

Working with farm animals can be physically active and sometimes challenging, as animals can be strong, independent, and occasionally moody. However, it is also deeply rewarding.

The sanctuary plays a critical role in Croatia, where many farm animals are still vulnerable to neglect. Volunteers are essential in ensuring each animal receives proper care and attention.

Cat Shelter – Split and Žrnovnica

The Cat Shelter is based in Žrnovnica just 20 minutes from Split, and it is focused exclusively on rescuing and caring for cats. The shelter houses more than 20 cats at any given time, many of whom have been abandoned or rescued from difficult situations.

Volunteers assist with:

  • Cleaning litter boxes and maintaining hygiene
  • Feeding cats
  • Playing, socializing, and providing affection
  • Monitoring general health and behavior

In Split city, volunteers may also support field rescue activities, such as:

  • Feeding stray cats
  • Assisting with catching cats for sterilization programs
  • Responding to rescue calls (for example, retrieving a cat stuck in bushes or unsafe areas)

Because volunteers may sometimes work independently, particularly during rescue or field activities, previous experience with cats and confidence handling animals is required for this placement.

Contributes to United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #15: Life on Land

Human activity has altered almost 75% of the earth’s surface and around 1 million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. Nature is critical to our survival. We must promote kindness to animals and use regenerative techniques to combat deforestation, conserve biodiversity and protect wildlife.

Location

Volunteer Abroad in Split, Croatia with IVHQ

Location

The IVHQ Croatia volunteer program is based in Split, a vibrant seaside city on the Mediterranean coast and the second largest city in Croatia. This is a golden opportunity to volunteer in Europe in a destination that’s high on every traveler’s bucket list. Known for its scenic ocean views, rich cultural heritage and authentic Croatian charm, Split is a popular hub for both locals and tourists alike.

Volunteer placements are located in and around Split, with the Marine Conservation project based in the nearby coastal town of Omiš. While program activities take place in and around Split, volunteers are accommodated a short drive from the city centre, with easy access to explore the area on foot or by public transport.

While Split is a well-developed city, it still has under-served communities, social and environmental challenges, and community-driven initiatives in need of support. By choosing to volunteer here, you’ll be contributing to meaningful local projects that aim to improve the livelihoods and wellbeing of the surrounding communities.

Arrival and orientation

The Croatia volunteer program begins on the first and third Monday of every month, and you need to arrive in Split on the Sunday before your chosen start date.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at Split International Airport (SPU). Your airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee, however, if you arrive outside of Sunday between 9:00AM - 9:00PM, your pick-up will incur an extra cost.

When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and taken to the volunteer accommodation. Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the night before your program orientation.

If you are traveling in Croatia prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up from a meeting point in Split on the Sunday before your program start date. You are also free to make your own way to the volunteer accommodation.

On Monday, orientation is hosted by our local team in Croatia and runs for a full day. Orientation covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Croatia – an introduction to Croatia, Croatian customs, rules and expectations, safety, travel opportunities in Croatia, and an introduction to your project and placement. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing.

Weekends:

Volunteers have the weekends free and Split and Croatia are full of interesting things to do, see, visit, eat and learn.

Croatia has a wondrous history and culture, paired with beautiful coastline and nature. You can spend a weekend traveling across the country - visit the popular Klis fortress that is only a short drive from Split, or spend the day in nature surrounded by waterfalls in Krka National Park or Plitvice National Park. If you are looking for an adventurous activity, try rafting down the river in Dalmatian hinterlands, or sea-kayaking the beautiful see-through Adriatic Sea. There is so much to see and explore, and nothing is far away in Croatia!

Volunteers can make travel arrangements further afield once in Croatia, with the advice and guidance of our local staff.

Accommodation and WiFi

Volunteers stay in a modern, centrally located hostel in Split, just a short walk from public transportation. Everyday essentials like supermarkets, cafés, pharmacies, and ATMs are all conveniently nearby, making it easy to settle in and get around the city.

Accommodation is in dormitory-style rooms, separated by gender, with up to eight people per room. Each volunteer is provided with a secure locker, and the hostel includes free WiFi and air conditioning to ensure a comfortable stay.

Please note that this is a public hostel, so it is shared with other travelers as well as volunteers. This creates a lively, social environment and offers a great opportunity to meet people from around the world.

Shared facilities include a dining area, a lounge for relaxing and socializing, and a communal kitchen with a refrigerator, microwaves, and basic cooking utensils. Bathrooms are shared and separated by gender, with Western-style toilets and hot showers. Bedding and towels are provided, and the facilities are cleaned regularly, though volunteers are expected to help maintain cleanliness in communal areas.

For those desiring more privacy, private rooms can be arranged at an additional cost. Please contact us or your Program Manager for more details and pricing. Please note that all accommodation upgrades are subject to availability.

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

KP
Katie Parker

I feel that you have to just try it. You will never know if you like it if you don’t go for it. If you feel nervous about moving too far away from home then go to a country that you live near to so if it is not for you can can go home easily or your family/friends can visit.

I feel like I have gained so much appreciation for everyone I have met. Including the cats! They are so resilient despite illness or whatever life threw at them. I have been given so much life advice from the people I worked with and the coordinator and I am forever grateful to everything I have experienced.

This experience was truly amazing. I met so many amazing people and made beautiful relationships that I will cherish. Having the opportunity to support a local animal shelter really inspired me and motivated me to pursue that passion back home. I’m so thankful I had this experience :)

Go with an open mind. It’s helping animals in a shelter, it’s not the best environment however the pay off is heart warming. To arrive in the morning to a group of animals that are genuinely excited to see you, you clean their environments, socialise and feed them. Then to see them happy and content just for another day was for me absolutely a special feeling, happy tears to see them sleeping comfortably. Every day was special ❤️
