English lessons in Ecuador are seen as incredibly valuable in opening up opportunities, but they’re often expensive and inaccessible for those from lower income communities. Volunteers contribute greatly by encouraging the correct usage and pronunciation of English in conversation, reading and writing.
As a volunteer English teacher, you can choose between assisting local teachers, leading a classroom independently or working with a group of adult students. Volunteers who choose to teach children can also provide supplementary tutoring and help teachers to supervise playtimes.
You’ll generally volunteer for up to four hours a day, teaching English in classrooms of up to 35 students. You’ll need to be able to speak Spanish to at least a basic level in order to be successful in this project.
As volunteers work with the support of IVHQ’s local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher. However, we encourage volunteers to come prepared by completing some relevant training, like a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course. Visit our Online TEFL Course page to learn how to gain an internationally-recognized TEFL certification at a discounted rate.
