This program is ideal for:

Volunteers who are passionate about conservation and marine life and enjoy spending time beside the ocean.

Project details

Love the ocean and want to volunteer in coastal and marine conservation in Zanzibar? IVHQ’s program offers a hands-on opportunity to protect Zanzibar’s unique marine ecosystems, gain practical experience, support environmental education in local communities, and learn about key sustainability challenges.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

Matemwe is home to some of Zanzibar’s most beautiful beaches and is a popular tourist destination. Here, volunteers have the unique opportunity to work alongside local marine biologists to help protect the coastal environment and support marine life conservation.

In addition to hands-on conservation work, engaging the local community in sustainable practices and environmental education is key to creating long-term impact. Volunteers also contribute to addressing Zanzibar’s growing waste problem, which poses a threat to marine life, coastal ecosystems, and human health.

The program focuses on local environmental needs through practical conservation efforts, community education, and waste reduction initiatives. Tasks may include:

  • Mangrove Protection: Planting, mapping, and protecting mangrove forests to strengthen shorelines and support carbon storage.
  • Coastal Sustainability: Participating in beach and village clean-ups, as well as upcycling projects such as turning plastic and glass waste into useful items.
  • Community Education: Teaching local children and communities about marine conservation, waste management, and basic swimming skills.
  • Sustainable Infrastructure: Supporting initiatives such as permaculture farming, solar energy, and greywater filtration systems.
  • Marine Life Monitoring: Assisting with fish identification through snorkeling, as well as dolphin observation and data collection.
  • Cultural Activities: Taking part in cooking lessons with local Zanzibari families.
  • Seaweed Farming & Women’s Empowerment: Supporting local women through seaweed farming and product development initiatives.

Please note that not all activities may be available during your stay, as this depends on factors such as project needs and the duration of your placement.

Location

Volunteer Abroad in Zanzibar with IVHQ

Location

Matemwe is a peaceful village on Zanzibar’s north-eastern coast, known for its white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and traditional Swahili culture. It offers a more authentic and relaxed atmosphere compared to busier parts of the island, with views of the nearby Mnemba Atoll.

Volunteers stay at a coastal conservation camp just a short walk from the beach, with many activities taking place along the shoreline and within the local community. The area’s coral reefs and marine life also provide great opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and exploring the coast.

Arrival and orientation

Volunteers need to arrive in Zanzibar on their Wednesday start date and their orientation will take place on the Wednesday afternoon and/or the following day.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Zanzibar. Your airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee. We recommend that volunteers under the age of 18 travel internationally with a notarized letter from their parents to support their documentation.

When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation. Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the Wednesday night before your Thursday program orientation. If you are traveling in Tanzania prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up in Zanzibar on your start date.

Orientation is hosted by our local team at the volunteer accommodation. Orientation begins on the Wednesday afternoon and/or the Thursday morning after your chosen start date. Orientation covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Zanzibar – an introduction to Zanzibar, Zanzibar customs, rules and expectations, language lessons (Kiunguja), safety, travel opportunities in Zanzibar, and an introduction to your project and placement. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers.

Volunteer schedule example

First Day

On the first day of the volunteering placement, you will be introduced to the staff you will be working with.

Weekdays - A typical day would be as follows:

5:45 - 7:15 AM Beach patrol
7:30 - 8:30 AM Breakfast at camp
9:00 AM Volunteers begin work for the morning
1:00 - 2:00 PM Lunch at camp
2:00 - 5:00 PM Volunteers resume work for the afternoon
6:30 - 7:30 PM Dinner at camp

Please note that the schedule may occasionally change due to weather, public or school holidays, or other unforeseen events that could affect your placement. We recommend checking in advance whether your intended travel dates coincide with any public or school holidays.

Weekends

Volunteers have free time on the weekends and are able to make the most of the gorgeous beaches, explore Zanzibar’s historic Stone Town or other towns, shop for souvenirs, or enjoy a range of adventure and outdoor activities including snorkeling, diving, swimming, wildlife viewing and fishing. If you’re staying for a while you may also like to fly back to mainland Tanzania or other parts of Africa where you can go on safari or otherwise explore.

Accommodation and WiFi

Volunteers stay in semi-permanent, fully furnished tents at a camp just a short walk from the beach. Tents are shared with 1 to 3 other volunteers and, where possible, are separated by gender, though this cannot always be guaranteed due to occupancy levels.

Each tent is equipped with bunk beds, individual lockers, a fridge, a fan, and power outlets. Bathroom facilities are shared.

Bedding is provided, but you will need to bring your own towel and biodegradable toiletries. Biodegradable shower gel is available, as greywater is reused to irrigate the gardens. Showers are solar-heated, and as electricity supply can be unreliable, power outages are very common and should be expected.

The camp is supported by cooks, housekeepers, maintenance staff, and security personnel. Program coordinators are available during the week, with phone support on weekends if needed.

Free WiFi is available in most areas of the camp, and a local SIM card can be provided during orientation.

Extra nights can be arranged before or after your program for an additional cost (including meals), subject to availability. Please note that surcharges apply for airport transfers outside of Wednesdays. Private room upgrades are also available at an additional cost and can be requested via your MyIVHQ profile after registration.

Meals

Zanzibar’s cuisine varies across the island, influenced by local produce from inland and coastal areas. Staple foods include rice, chapati, and coconut-based dishes. The diet is largely plant-based, making it ideal for vegetarians, while meat is less commonly consumed.

Volunteers are provided with three buffet-style meals per day, featuring a mix of local and Western dishes. Breakfast typically includes toast with jam or honey, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, cereals, tea, and filtered coffee.

Lunch and dinner often consist of rice, chapati, beans, pasta, vegetables or occasional meat or fish. Vegetables commonly include carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, and okra, often prepared in a coconut-based sauce. The meal plan focuses on sustainable practices and balanced, plant-based nutrition, with approximately two meat and three fish dishes served per week.

Please note that while vegetarian diets can be accommodated, the local team may not be able to cater to other specific dietary requirements. Volunteers should be flexible or prepared to supplement meals if needed.

Filtered drinking water is available at the accommodation, and volunteers are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to help reduce plastic waste.

Weather and climate

Zanzibar follows very similar weather patterns to that of mainland Tanzania but is always a little more humid and warm weather should be expected all year round. The island’s rainy season runs from March through May when humidity is high and afternoon downpours are common. The dry season occurs from June through October and rain is infrequent. During November and December there’s another short rainy season followed by a short dry season across January and February.

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

Lizzie Parlane

It’s a life changing and incredibly valuable experience. My son gained so much from it. He said it was the best experience he’d ever had. I also have such precious memories of my week with Mother Nature as well.

Just commit and book it! I’m so grateful I did. I felt the normal worries like “What if I don’t make friends there? What if I do something stupid or culturally inappropriate? What if I don’t speak the language? What if I spend this money and the whole thing just isn’t what I was hoping for?”

The fact is, I’ve met some of the most incredible people in the world on these trips. The people volunteering abroad are generally very accepting and friendly. The culture is generally very accepting and friendly. We all make mistakes, but what we are doing is inherently good. That speaks worlds to how you will be seen and treated abroad. Money is replaceable but experiences like these are one in a million. I’m so grateful I went.

The meals were awesome! It was always clean and tasty. A good mix of local vs. western cuisine.

I felt so safe and taken care of by IVHQ and the local team. They were easy to reach in person or via phone, and always had my back.
