I came to Morocco thinking I was going to give, but I went home with so much more. I gained new friendships, a deeper understanding of another culture and faith, and memories with children and families that will stay with me for life.
If you are hesitant, go. You don’t have to change the whole world. Sometimes, sharing your time, your knowledge and your heart is enough. And somewhere along the way, you may discover that the experience changes you too.
I felt completely immersed in a radically different culture with support, accessible contacts, and kindness. I had a safe and clean home to return to, and I feel like they have become extended family to me now. Connecting with the children was absolutely magical. They were so happy to have us there and we were greeted with hugs and love from them every day. The location was perfect, and I now have lifelong friends in Rabat. My life has improved, and my world has expanded because of this trip. I will absolutely do another one, somewhere different, and continue to broaden my world through this organization. I cannot say enough about my local coordinator. He is a gem - a truly good person with a kind heart and all the knowledge and tools to set us up for a successful experience.
One of the greatest lessons I learned from my volunteer experience in Morocco is that opportunity is not shared equally. I met talented and hardworking people whose opportunities are often shaped by access to resources many of us take for granted.
What I will remember most, however, is the incredible kindness of our host family. They welcomed us with warmth, generosity, and love, making us feel like part of their family. Despite our different backgrounds, we shared meals, stories, laughter, and a genuine human connection.
The experience also gave us the opportunity to teach our children the value of gratitude, service, and cultural understanding. Not just through words, but through firsthand experience. We returned home with a deeper appreciation for the blessings we have and the importance of building bridges across cultures.
This experience has given me so much more than I ever expected. I came back with a new perspective on life, a greater sense of empathy, and memories that will last a lifetime. Taking part in several programs allowed me to truly see the difference we can make, and the bonds I built with the local team, the host family, and fellow volunteers are something I will cherish forever.
To anyone who is hesitating: just do it. Don't overthink it. You will be supported every step of the way by an amazing local team who is always there for you, and welcomed like family by your host family. It is not just a volunteering trip it is a life-changing adventure that will push you out of your comfort zone in the best possible way. A special mention to my host family, who were absolutely incredible. From the very first day, they welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like part of the family. Their kindness, generosity, and warmth made such a difference to my overall experience. Living with them was without a doubt one of the highlights of my time in Morocco!
One piece of advice I would give to anyone staying for a longer period: don't stick to just one program! Taking part in several programs is the best way to maximise your impact, discover different aspects of the local community, and make the most of your time. Each program brings something unique, and the more you do, the richer your experience will be!
