Location

Volunteer Abroad in Jamaica with IVHQ

Location

On the world stage, Jamaica is the star of the Caribbean. Home to the Rastafarian religion and culture, reggae music and known for its sporting efforts, it also boasts dazzling beaches, plentiful wildlife and being the backdrop for many James Bond films. It has long been a popular tourist destination. But despite all of this, Jamaica has a history of slavery, unemployment and slow economic development that are still in the process of being remedied today. Volunteers are needed to provide support for people who face the challenges of living in low-income communities and to help address socioeconomic inequalities so this island nation can continue to grow and prosper.

Tucked up on the stunning north-eastern coast is the parish of St Mary where IVHQ’s Jamaica program is based. Volunteer projects are located in St Ann and St Mary, within 10 to 50 minutes from the volunteer accommodation and close to the port town of Ocho Rios, which is a resort and cruise ship harbor and has plenty of restaurants and craft markets which volunteers can explore in their free time.

Arrival and orientation

Once you’ve registered, please book your flights to arrive at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) on the Sunday before your retreat begins. Airport pick-up is included in your Program Fee if you arrive between 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Sunday. If your flight arrives outside of this window, you’ll need to arrange your own transport to the volunteer accommodation.

Upon arrival at Sangster International Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted by a member of our local team who will escort you on a scenic 1.5-2 hour drive to your volunteer accommodation in the beautiful St. Mary region. After you check in and settle into your new surroundings, we’ll gather for a delicious welcome dinner—a vibrant Caribbean feast where you’ll meet your fellow participants and get a sneak peek of what’s in store for the week ahead. The night’s accommodation is included in your Program Fee.

On Monday morning, we’ll kick off with a rejuvenating yoga session to set the tone for the week, followed by a hearty breakfast. Afterward, we’ll dive into orientation, where you’ll learn more about the exciting volunteer projects and the goals we’ll be working toward together. You’ll also enjoy a guided tour of Ocho Rios, a charming local town, where you’ll get to explore and connect with the community. The day will wrap up with a relaxing group dinner, giving you the chance to unwind and bond with your fellow participants.

Accommodation and WiFi

Experience the warmth of Jamaica while staying in one of two comfortable houses, located on the same property. The main house accommodates up to 15 participants, while the other house offers a smaller setting for 7 guests. Rooms are shared with up to three fellow guests, and all bedrooms include an ensuite bathroom for added convenience.

The houses are equipped with electricity, running water, and WiFi, though occasional outages may occur due to local infrastructure. Bathrooms are western-style, with low-pressure showers that typically provide cool water, a refreshing option in the tropical climate. Ceiling fans are provided in each room to help with the heat, especially during the summer. Mesh screens are installed on the windows, though bringing a mosquito net is optional for added comfort.

A staff member is always nearby, either staying on-site or close by, to provide support when needed. Safes are available to secure your belongings, and a housekeeper visits once or twice a week to assist with upkeep. Volunteers are expected to contribute by cleaning up after themselves and keeping shared spaces tidy.

For safety reasons, there is an 11:00 PM curfew every night, including weekends, as transportation options are limited after this time.

If you prefer more privacy, private room upgrades are available on-site for an additional charge, providing a quieter and more personal space to relax after a busy day.

This property also accommodates volunteers participating in other projects offered in Jamaica. This provides a wonderful opportunity where you can connect with fellow volunteers engaged in a diverse range of volunteering activities, embrace local culture, and enjoy your time in Jamaica.

Meals

Caribbean-inspired menu with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and a focus on clean eating. Offering a variety of vegetarian and pescatarian options, volunteers can enjoy dishes like jerk vegetables, rice and peas, grilled fish, and seasonal salads, all prepared with authentic Caribbean spices. This menu provides a healthy, flavorful experience that perfectly complements the Caribbean adventure while supporting wellness.

Breakfast is served at around 7:30 AM (exact time depends on the sunrise yoga session).

Dinner is served at 6:00 PM.

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

Nicole Mills

I gained a deeper sense of gratitude, empathy and purpose from the Christmas Project experience in Jamaica. Seeing the joy and impact of giving back was incredibly heartwarming. I would encourage anyone who is hesitant to step outside of their comfort zone, as the program on a whole is meaningful and such a rewarding experience that certainly stays with you long after it ends. It has truly helped me grow emotionally as I was given so much power in giving back. And trust me, it has not stopped, a barrel is sitting beside ready to be shipped back to the community.

There were a lot of resources and it was organized on the website very well. It’s hard to miss anything which I really appreciated. The local team was very caring. They truly want you to feel comfortable! The kids were truly the best and welcomed me into their lives with open arms. They are kind, resilient, have so much energy and an infectious laughter that filled each day with joy and purpose. Every moment spent with these kids was a reminder of the incredible capacity we all have to uplift one another. The connections I built with the kids, teachers and locals was something I’ll always remember.

The advice I would give to someone joining this program is to take it day by day. There will be days that are hard especially adjusting from being away from home. Be patient with yourself and don’t compare yourself to the other volunteers. The more open minded you are the more fun you will have. I got sick mid way through the program and at first I was really down on myself, I felt like I was missing out and it put me into a slump. Once I changed my mindset and allowed myself to rest, my energy shifted. By the end of the program I didn’t want to go home. Overall my advice is to cherish every moment, even the ones that may be hard because so much growth comes from it.

This program exceeded my expectations! I went in with a wish to volunteer and learn from a new country and left with life long friends, kids who appreciated every moment we were volunteering in their school, pictures of beautiful landscapes, stomach hurting laughs, beautiful heart touching interactions and lots of love in a new country. The local team were all really nice and friendly, the accommodation was really nice and clean, and the meals were perfectly prepared and I enjoyed tasting flavors I’m not used to.
