Sport is an integral part of growing up in Fiji, where young people are active and lively, and love to get outside and play. As a volunteer, you’ll help to deliver sport and lessons that cater to every ability, creating a fun and healthy environment.
You’ll be based either on after school sports programs or in a local elementary school. This placement depends on your experience and time on the program - volunteers with a coaching or sports qualification, who are in Fiji for four weeks or more will be placed in schools, and volunteers who are staying for less than four weeks or don’t have sporting qualifications will help on after school tutorials.
When you volunteer in schools in Fiji, you’ll assist local staff in structured physical education classes, playing games and helping to develop skills and understanding, according to the local curriculum.
On after school tutorials, your role is simply to play games. You’ll encourage fair play and teamwork, passively helping local school children to be active and improve their skills.
This project can be unstructured, so you’ll need to be flexible and be willing to teach their choice of sports/activities with limited equipment available. The main sports the children play are soccer, netball, rugby and volleyball, however you’re welcome to introduce a sport from your home.
You’ll need to be energetic and able to keep up with excitable children who enjoy being active. The project is best suited to volunteers who have some experience in sport, though this is not a requirement.
During school exams or holidays, all volunteers will be placed in either the Construction and Renovation project, Kindergarten project or participate in ‘Kids Club’. On the ‘Kids Club’ you can expect to teach sport education on Fridays and the remainder will be general teaching according to the theme of the week, such as healthy living.Apply now
