Guatemala

  • Qualifications required: Pre dental students, dental students and qualified dentists and dental hygienists
  • Placement settings: Local clinics and elderly homes
  • Program duration: Volunteer for 1 to 24 weeks, programs start every Monday
  • Program fees: From $299USD (+$65USD medical surcharge per week for supervision, materials and the logistics involved in this project). Fees include airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 in-country support

Volunteers working on the Medical project in Guatemala can get hands-on experience working with local professionals in small local clinics, providing check-ups and basic care in low income communities. Work is available for volunteers of all experience levels, but assigned tasks and the level of independence a volunteer will have depends their qualifications and experience, as well as Spanish language skills.

Peru - Cusco

  • Qualifications required: Pre dental students, dental students and qualified dentists and dental hygienists
  • Placement settings: Hospitals and clinics
  • Program duration: Volunteer for 1 to 24 weeks, programs start every Monday
  • Program fees: From $295USD (+$65USD medical surcharge per week for supervision, materials and the logistics involved in this project) which includes airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 in-country support

Clinics and hospitals for low income families in Cusco tend to be underfunded and under-staffed, and volunteers play an important role in assisting local dentists while also learning about the healthcare system in Cusco. Your placement will be dependent on your level of Spanish - a basic level is advantageous, but a higher level preferred.

Peru - Lima

  • Qualifications required: Pre dental students, dental students and qualified dentists with an intermediate level of Spanish
  • Placement settings: A mobile “clini-bus”
  • Program duration: Volunteer for 1 to 24 weeks, programs start on the 1st and 15th of each month
  • Program fees: From $180USD which includes airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 in-country support

Dental students and professionals who speak at least intermediate Spanish can help a mobile clinic provide dental care to underprivileged areas of Lima, while working alongside Peruvian healthcare professionals. Volunteers in Peru cater to a range of patient needs, as the clinic is operated in a bus that reaches neighborhoods where people cannot always afford even basic healthcare. Tasks will vary based on your level of experience and Spanish skill level.

India - Delhi

  • Qualifications required: Pre dental students, dental students and qualified dentists and dental hygienists
  • Placement settings: Hospitals and a mobile clinic
  • Program duration: Volunteer for 1 to 24 weeks, programs start on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month
  • Program fees: From $250USD which includes airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 in-country support

Delhi provides opportunities for both dental students, as well as qualified professionals to gain a first-hand insight to the medical systems in one of the world’s fast-growing countries. Dental volunteers in India work in hospitals and clinics in Delhi, shadowing experienced professionals who are enthusiastic about exchanging their knowledge and experience with international volunteers. Longer-term volunteers (staying 3 months or more) will have more scope to assist with hands-on tasks.

Tanzania

  • Qualifications required: Students who have completed at least 2 years at dental school and qualified dentists
  • Placement settings: Volunteers are based in variety of local Clinics and small Hospitals
  • Program duration: Volunteer for 1 to 16 weeks, programs start on the 1st and 15th of each month
  • Program fees: From $270USD which includes airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 in-country support

Dental volunteers are greatly received in Tanzania, especially those who come with initiative, enthusiasm and readiness to work in very basic facilities with limited resources available. Volunteers work in a variety of settings, including medical clinics and hospitals, with the location depending on the volunteers previous experience and training. To comply with the Tanzania Healthcare system, volunteers will shadow local professionals and assist in performing basic patient care, and it’s important to note that this project focuses more on observation, than getting involved in independent tasks. This project is ideal for those who have completed at least 2 years of dental school, or those wanting to broaden their experience and knowledge of healthcare systems around the world.

Bali - Ubud

  • Qualifications required: Volunteers are not required to have prior experience or training to participate.
  • Placement settings: Volunteers work in local schools
  • Program duration: Volunteer for 1 to 12 weeks, programs start every Monday
  • Program fees: From $295USD which includes airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 in-country support

Dental volunteers with an interest in education and dental hygiene are welcome to join the Bali Healthcare Education project. This project takes place in local schools in the Ubud area, actively teaching the importance of basic dental hygiene and general health. Topics can include brushing teeth correctly however volunteers are not restricted and are encouraged to come prepared with an idea of what they would like to teach.

Bali - Lovina

  • Qualifications required: Volunteers are not required to have prior experience or training to participate
  • Placement settings: Volunteers work in local schools
  • Program duration: Volunteer for 1 to 12 weeks, programs start on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month
  • Program fees: From $320USD which includes airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals and 24/7 in-country support

How do I apply for a dental volunteer abroad program with IVHQ?

  • Browse our dental volunteer opportunities and choose a destination and the project you wish to volunteer on, as well as the dates you wish to volunteer.
  • Complete the free online application form with the details of your chosen program and dates. You will then receive an email confirming that IVHQ has received your application. Within 48 hours (2 working days), you will receive an email from your IVHQ Program Manager acknowledging your application and confirming the country, project and dates of your volunteer program. In this email, you will receive instructions on how to pay the US$299 Registration Fee in order to confirm your booking with IVHQ.
  • Log in to your MyIVHQ account to pay your Registration Fee. As soon as your Registration Fee has been received by IVHQ, you will be provided with all the information and support you need to prepare for your upcoming volunteer program. Your IVHQ Program Manager will be your point of contact throughout your preparations up until you finish your volunteer program.

How can I volunteer with a group of dental students or colleagues?

We are proud to have hosted a large number of dental volunteer groups over the past 10 years, and we have a specialized IVHQ Groups Team who will provide your group with all the information and support you need to register for one of our volunteer programs. For groups of over 8 or more members, we can also help you in building a customized group itinerary, or organize a dental campaign for you to support. We’ll guide you and your group through the application process, from start to finish, and ensure that you and your group are prepared for your volunteer trip.
