I am a big fan of IVHQ and have had wonderful experiences in Zambia, Madagascar, Indonesia, and now Ghana. My advice is to go with no expectations and keep a completely open mind throughout the experience. I enjoy getting completely out of my own world and immersing myself in another country and culture. The most remarkable thing about volunteering is the feeling of giving back and meeting wonderful people along the way, both locals and other volunteers.

At first, I was definitely overthinking not knowing if this program would be the “ right fit”. I took a leap of faith and joined the IVHQ Ghana volunteer medical program for 2 weeks and it was the best experience ever. I should have done 3 weeks honestly as the time flew by. I got to be immersed in the culture, see and understand new perspectives, serve others humbly and care for the sick in a way I would have never been able to back home. I would 100% do this program again in any other country and want to continue helping the less fortunate as I have been so blessed throughout my life. The program will tell you everything you need to know from beginning to end and I was comfortable throughout the entire process before, during and after.

Volunteering as a nurse in Ghana was an incredible experience that gave me a deeper appreciation for cultural humility, adaptability, and the power of human connection. The people were kind, welcoming, and eager to share their knowledge, and the volunteer organization truly thought of everything. I felt safe, supported, and well-prepared throughout. I gained valuable experience in how a field school is run with students and it gave me a completely different perspective on both nursing and life.
