This program is ideal for:

Volunteers with experience in creativity, business or teaching, or anyone who is open-minded and happy to be flexible in supporting local Sri Lankan women.

Project details

Interested in supporting women’s empowerment in Sri Lanka? International Volunteer HQ’s Women’s Education project in Kandy offers volunteers the opportunity to work directly with women from the local community who are looking to build practical skills and increase their financial independence.

Many women in this region are eager to contribute to their household income but may not have access to formal training or resources. Through this project, volunteers help by sharing skills that can be turned into small home-based businesses or income-generating activities.

Workshops are typically informal and practical. Volunteers might demonstrate how to create handmade products, share simple business tips, or teach techniques that women can continue using long after the program finishes. The goal is not only to learn new skills, but to build confidence and create opportunities for long-term financial stability.

This project is particularly well suited to volunteers who enjoy creative activities, entrepreneurship, or sharing practical knowledge. Even simple ideas can have a meaningful impact when they help someone develop a product or service they can sell locally.

Women's Empowerment in Sri Lanka

Women’s empowerment in Sri Lanka focuses on helping women gain financial independence, build practical skills, and create sustainable livelihoods. Volunteers play an important role by sharing knowledge in areas such as crafts, small business development, and digital marketing, helping women develop income opportunities that support their families and strengthen their communities.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

Volunteering on the Women’s Education project means working alongside women who are motivated to learn skills that can help support their families. Many of the participants are interested in creating products they can sell locally or developing services they can offer within their communities.

Sessions usually take place in small group workshops where volunteers demonstrate techniques and then guide participants as they try the activities themselves. It is a relaxed learning environment where everyone shares ideas and learns from one another.

The types of skills volunteers may help teach vary depending on their experience and interests. Popular areas of learning often include craft production, small business skills, and practical trades that can be done from home.

Some examples include:

Sewing and Textile Skills

Women often want to learn sewing techniques that allow them to produce items they can sell, such as clothing, reusable bags, or children’s garments. Volunteers with sewing experience may demonstrate pattern making, garment construction, or simple textile upcycling methods that turn leftover fabric into useful products.

Handmade Crafts and Creative Products

Handmade crafts are another popular focus. Volunteers sometimes share techniques for creating jewelry, decorative items, or home décor products. Items made from recycled materials are particularly valuable because they keep costs low while allowing women to produce unique products for local markets.

Food Production and Small Home Businesses

Food products can be an effective way for women to start small businesses. Volunteers may demonstrate how to make jams, chutneys, or dried fruit products while also sharing ideas for packaging and presentation that make products more appealing to customers.

Agriculture and Sustainable Livelihoods

Some women are interested in growing food or producing natural products that can be sold locally. Volunteers may introduce simple techniques such as small-space gardening, mushroom cultivation, or preparing herbal products.

Beauty and Personal Care Skills

Beauty services can also provide reliable income opportunities. Volunteers with experience in beauty or personal care may demonstrate hairstyling techniques, bridal preparation, or natural cosmetic products.

Business and Entrepreneurship Skills

Beyond practical skills, volunteers may also share knowledge about running a small business. This might include simple budgeting, calculating product costs, pricing items for sale, or thinking about how to present products attractively.

Digital Skills for Selling Products

In recent years, digital tools have become increasingly useful for small businesses. Volunteers may help women learn how to photograph products using their phones, promote items on social media, or communicate with customers using messaging platforms.

Preparing to Volunteer

Before arriving, volunteers are asked to contact the local team about two weeks before their start date to discuss the skills they plan to share. The team can then help organize materials and ensure the workshops align with the interests of the women participating.

During school holidays, some women may not be able to attend classes because they are caring for their children. When this happens, volunteers may instead help organize educational or creative activities for the children of the participating families.

Female medical professionals joining either the Medical or Women’s Education projects may also contribute by supporting women’s health education or basic screenings. In Sri Lanka, many women feel more comfortable discussing sensitive health concerns with female doctors, so volunteers can provide a supportive and welcoming environment for these conversations. It is important to note during school holidays the women may be busy with their families to attend classes so instead volunteers will be able to teach the local children of the women.

Location

Volunteer Abroad in Sri Lanka with IVHQ

Location

Known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Sri Lanka is an island nation set off the south-east coast of India. Famous for its tea plantations, cinnamon exports and cricket rivalries, it also boasts a vast array of beaches, Buddhas and big beasts like elephants and whales.

While Sri Lanka is a well-developed country which has made great strides towards making sure its residents don’t live in extreme poverty, there are still many places outside of the main centers where people struggle to access good quality education, healthcare and earn a decent living to support themselves and their families. Volunteers can help in these areas by providing important support to local initiatives that aim to improve the quality of life for people in these disadvantaged areas.

Most of IVHQ’s Sri Lanka volunteer projects are based in the small, sacred city of Kandy.

Arrival and orientation

The program orientation begins every Monday and volunteers need to arrive in Colombo on Sunday between 5am and 8pm to receive an airport pick up.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at the Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) on Sunday. Your airport pick-up on this day is included in your Program Fee. We recommend that volunteers under the age of 18 travel internationally with a notarized letter from their parents to support their documentation.

After you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation in Kandy. Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the Sunday night before your program orientation.

If you are traveling in Sri Lanka prior to your volunteer program, you can meet the local team at the airport in Colombo on the Sunday before your program begins, or make your own way directly to the local team’s office in Kandy.

Orientation is run by the local team in Kandy, beginning on the Monday morning of your start date. There are two options for orientation:

One-day Orientation: This provides you with all the key information you need, plus the chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing. It includes an introduction to Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan customs, rules and expectations, safety in Sri Lanka, travel opportunities in Sri Lanka, an introduction to your volunteer project and placement, Kandy city tour, cultural show and basic Sinhala language lessons.

5-day Culture Week: This is a fantastic way to start your volunteer experience in Sri Lanka and gives you the time to dive deeper into the culture and activities. It will include everything on the One-Day Orientation as well as the following activities:

  • Visit a local spice and herbal garden
  • Herbal Massage
  • Visit to a local tea factory and Ceylon Tea tasting
  • Sri Lankan cooking lesson
  • Visit to the famous Temple of the Tooth
  • Lantern making
  • Sri Lankan Dancing lesson
  • Kandy City tour
  • Gem Museum
  • Sri Lankan Food Tasting
  • Language and Culture Lesson
  • Visit to the White Buddha
  • Henna Painting with locals

If you wish to join the Culture Week, you can add this to your itinerary via your pre-departure checklist once you have submitted your application.

Volunteer schedule example

First Day

On your first day of volunteering, you will be escorted to your placement by a local coordinator and introduced to the placement staff you will be working with.

Weekdays - A typical volunteer day is as follows:

7:30 AM Breakfast at the volunteer house.
8:00 AM Volunteers go to the placement and help.
12:00 PM Volunteers break for lunch.
2:00 PM Volunteers plan for their project the following day or help on other projects if available.
5:30 PM Dinner at the volunteer house.

Please note that the schedule may occasionally change due to weather, public or school holidays, or other unforeseen events that could affect your placement. We recommend checking in advance whether your intended travel dates coincide with any public or school holidays.

Weekends

During the weekends, volunteers are free to relax or take the opportunity to explore other parts of Kandy and Sri Lanka. Kandy itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has an exciting selection of things to see and do. You can visit a number of beautiful and ornate temples including the Temple of the Tooth - an important shrine housing a canine tooth said to belong to the Buddha; wander in the grand and impressive Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya; tour a tea plantation and factory; sample the tasty and widely-regarded local cuisine; or take a walk up to the biggest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka and be rewarded with fantastic panoramic views of the city. Long weekends can be taken to travel further afield to destinations, such as Colombo, Galle or even Southern India.

Accommodation and WiFi

Volunteers in Kandy are accommodated in a volunteer house. Bedrooms have bunk beds and you can expect to share a room with four to nine other volunteers of the same gender.

Living is comfortable and the accommodation has electricity, fans, running water. Bathrooms in the volunteer houses are all western style with a toilet, basin and a warm shower. Bedding is provided and includes a pillow with pillow case and top and bottom sheets. You will need to bring a towel, toiletries including hand soap and toilet paper, and a mosquito net if you wish to sleep with one.

The volunteer house has a local team member staying in the house at night and there is an 8:00pm curfew on weeknights and 12:00am on weekends.

To access the internet during your program, we recommend bringing an unlocked mobile phone and purchasing a local SIM card when you arrive in Sri Lanka, as WiFi is not available in the volunteer accommodation.

Private rooms can be arranged for an additional $92 per room/per week, subject to availability at the time.

Please note that families with younger children are required to book a private room for their time on the program.

Meals

Volunteers on the Sri Lanka program are provided with three meals a day during the week and brunch and dinner during the weekend. Breakfast includes toast, eggs, fruit, tea, coffee and milk. Sri Lankan foods served for lunch and dinner include roti bread, dhal, curries, vegetables and salads. Meat is rarely eaten except on festive occasions.

Bottled water is readily available in Sri Lanka and volunteers should budget approximately $5 per week for 2 liters per day. There are also water filters in the volunteer houses. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know when you apply for the program so we can discuss this with you. However, you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. The local team will do their best to see that you are well taken care of, but as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible. If you wish to supplement some of your meals with home comforts, there are basic kitchen facilities available to use.

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

IN
Irene Neal

My placement in women's empowerment was a brand new project and I was the first volunteer to participate in this program. It was a beginning experience for me, to help design the content that would be shared with the women of the village. It was an enormously satisfying experience which gave me great personal satisfaction in watching the participants take ownership of the various activities we accomplished. My hope would be to visit Ethimale again, if possible, and reunite my time with these beautiful people. I have much caring and compassion to share with them. I know they would be happy to see me again, as I would them.

From this experience, I gained far more than I expected—connection, perspective, and a renewed sense of purpose. I learned that even simple acts—listening, showing up, encouraging—can create powerful change. I was reminded how much beauty lives in humility and how growth happens when we step out of our comfort zone and into someone else’s world.

To anyone hesitant about joining this program: don’t wait. If your heart is even slightly pulled toward service, follow it. You don’t need to be perfect, just present. You’ll give so much—but receive even more in return.

The guidance and preparation before I left for Sri Lanka made me feel very comfortable and confident in what I was embarking on. My Program Manager was great!

The local team in Sri Lanka was fantastic and was only too happy to accommodate different needs and made such an effort to make us feel so comfortable. The main coordinator went out of his way to organize and adjust different requests regarding our programs.

In regards to the accommodation at the volunteer house, my bed was so comfortable and I even had my own bathroom!

It is something I always wanted to do. So glad I did it and I would recommend that others don’t hesitate!

Jana Tilikete

This literally changed my life. At first, I was extremely hesitant to do this alone as I am a young woman so obviously I was worried about safety etc. however, when you get to meet the local community all your worries vanish. The local team gives you advice on where you should avoid going in terms of safety, they had a trusted local tuk-tuk driver that could pick us up from wherever we were if we needed it. I stayed only 2 weeks but I wished I could have stayed more. The special needs program made me grow as a person and I know for a fact that nothing I had done in the past had the same impact in my life as this.

Keep In mind that you have to be extremely open-minded when choosing to do this as it is extremely different from what you are used to. if you know that you can't handle seeing extreme cases of special needs I would strongly advise to not do this , and go for animal volunteering which could be a better fit for you. Overall I would highly recommend the special needs program,

FAQs

Women’s Education volunteers help teach practical skills that women can use to earn income or start small businesses. This may include crafts, sewing, food production, entrepreneurship, or digital marketing skills.

Teaching experience is not required. Volunteers simply need to be willing to share practical knowledge and support women who are eager to learn new skills.

Skills related to sewing, crafts, beauty services, food production, business development, or digital marketing are especially helpful. However, volunteers can contribute in many different ways depending on their background.

Volunteers work with women from the local community who want to develop practical skills that can help them generate income and support their families.

Yes. Qualified female doctors can support women’s health initiatives by providing health education or screenings in a comfortable and supportive environment.

When some women cannot attend workshops due to family responsibilities, volunteers may instead run activities or educational sessions for their children.

Most materials are arranged locally, but volunteers teaching specialized skills may choose to bring small tools, examples, or visual resources that support their workshops.

Volunteers can join from one week, but staying longer allows more time to build relationships with participants and run multiple workshops.
