Where Can Americans Travel Now?

Where can Americans travel to now? Your guide to IVHQ volunteer program destinations open to US travelers.

Find out which IVHQ programs are running in countries open to US tourists

Let’s face it, the last year has been an absolute rollercoaster ride. The world needs rebuilding and we’re ready to get back out there and make a difference. That’s why many Americans are opting for a kinder, more regenerative way to travel in 2021 - by volunteering abroad.

As more and more countries reopen, IVHQ volunteers are adding immense value by helping local NGOs, communities and conservation initiatives get back on their feet. Volunteers are also getting the opportunity to explore some of the world’s most sought after destinations without hoards of tourists.

We’re here to keep you updated on where you can volunteer abroad as the world reopens and what the Covid-19 entry requirements are for each country. We’re regularly updating this guide and have answered some of your most common questions about US international travel restrictions below.

Are Americans allowed to travel right now?

Yes, Americans can travel right now! The US government has lifted the level 4 “Avoid All Travel” advisory and Americans continue to be allowed to leave the country as they please.

Our volunteer programs are only opening in destinations where the local government and public health guidelines deem it safe. You can see the full list of IVHQ programs in countries open to US travelers below.

PCR Covid-19 testing can find small amounts of virus genes to show if you are currently infected with the virus. This has given the world more insight into Covid-19, enabling many destinations to welcome back travelers from the US.

It’s worth noting that Americans are required to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test to return back to the US after traveling. Testing is available in all IVHQ program locations and our local teams can provide guidance for volunteers in-country on where to obtain the tests as well as any costs associated with them. Your IVHQ Program Manager can offer advice around this prior to departing on your volunteer trip and to help with your planning.

Is it safe for Americans to travel now?

Authorities and governments have reopened their borders to American tourists where they believe it is safe to do so. The US State Department advises that all travelers check country-specific travel advisories on their website or consult the CDC’s latest guidance before going abroad.

All IVHQ programs have implemented additional health and safety measures to protect volunteers and local communities against Covid-19. This includes a requirement for all volunteers to show negative results from a Covid-19 test within 72 hours of traveling. IVHQ also has a flexible booking policy in place, so that you can easily make changes to your dates, destination or project after booking - for free.

It is always important, especially during this time, to protect yourself with the right travel insurance. We partner with World Nomads because unlike many other providers, US residents may make claims arising from Covid-19 for the benefits specified in your policy.
