For decades, Philadelphia’s low income and homeless population has been marginalized due to a severe lack of employment, affordable housing, healthcare services, and mental health support networks. As a result, this vulnerable population continues to rise, with the available services struggling to keep up with these demands. The Community Development project endeavors to provide support structures in the heart of disadvantaged communities that aim to directly benefit the lives of those who rely on support services for food, shelter, clothing and other necessities.
Volunteers can assist in a range of ways and on various different initiatives, all with the aim of helping those who need it. You can expect to collaborate with community centers, homeless shelters, food banks, and missions to address the needs of health, wellness and hunger within the homeless and low-income population. Your tasks may include meal preparation, sorting and distributing donations of food, clothing, and household goods, community outreach initiatives, and assisting with other community projects to raise awareness about this vulnerable population.
This is a perfect project for caring volunteers with a passion for helping disadvantaged people and communities. You will be making a tangible contribution to a worthy cause and having a direct impact to better the lives of people who can often feel marginalized by society, but are exceedingly grateful for the support they receive.
Why volunteer in Philadelphia?
As the first American capital and the birthplace of ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’, Philadelphia is steeped in history, arts and culture across its vibrant neighborhoods, markets and beer gardens. Sadly, more than a quarter of people in Philadelphia are living below the poverty line with many lacking access to healthcare, housing, food, employment and mental health support. Volunteering on our Community Development program is a great way to directly support these disadvantaged populations, while experiencing the city as much more than just a tourist destination.
