As our lives become increasingly busy with technology and social media feeds, we’re finding it harder to disconnect from these artificial platforms. Yoga has become the go-to practice to realign with our physical, mental, and spiritual origins, and this has been amplified by more and more people traveling to yoga retreats to reconnect with nature and those around them. India, the home of yoga, is a must for anyone wanting to experience an authentic and immersive ashram. The IVHQ India program is based in Delhi, the bustling metropolis that has vibrant streets filled with food carts, markets and ancient buildings. Delhi truly is a city like no other you have visited before. The zen of a yoga retreat is the perfect way to truly appreciate the juxtaposition of the chaotic streets of India.
On the Delhi volunteer program, you can volunteer on the following projects: Childcare, Slum Teaching, Teaching English and Healthcare. The majority of placements are located in Faridabad, which is about 1 hour south of Delhi. Depending on your exact placement, your work will be roughly 4 - 6 hours a day and you will have ample opportunity in the evenings to explore your surroundings.
With so many yoga options in India, it’s important to figure out what you want from your time abroad - there really is an option for everyone, regardless of your budget. If you are already an established yogi, consider an ashram experience in India to extend your practice in a unique setting. Ashrams tend to be stricter than retreats, with the focus purely on yoga and spirituality. This means they are also affordable options as accommodation is basic.
For someone that’s just establishing their yoga practice, options around Kerala and Goa tend to be structured more towards a yoga holiday experience with quality accommodation and food. The holy city of Rishikesh, at the base of the Himalayas, is a popular option for young travelers and is famous for being the place The Beatles did a stint in a local ashram.
Cost and options
- Volunteer program fees from $250 for 1 week
- Check out Sivananda Yoga which offers has multiple ashrams and centers around India
- For teacher training in Rishikesh, consider Rishikul Yogshala Ashiyana

There are 5 volunteer opportunities to support, including Teaching English, Childcare, Special Needs Care, Animal Care/Animal Rights and Maya Agriculture projects. These are located in and around the city and you can expect to volunteer for 4 to 6 hours each day with the opportunity to explore your surroundings during the evenings and weekends.
