Medical internship or a Medical volunteer program?

Internship vs volunteering - volunteer

Internship vs volunteering - internship

Medical internships and medical volunteering trips can often be similar, how do you decide which one is best for you?

Internships are great for medical students because they can be tailored to give you course credit, especially if you’re aiming to fulfil a specific number of placement hours. They are more flexible and customizable based on your requirements and interests, and are good options for those looking to gain more tangible benefits focused on your own goals and objectives for personal and professional development. Often, medical internships can be chosen in specific fields, such as Nutrition, Pharmacy, Midwifery, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, and more. This specialization enables interns to select a field which best aligns with their studies, interests and career ambitions. If you’re exploring the career field and learning more about the direction you’d like to take your future studies, a medical internship abroad can also shed light on how medical careers come to life outside the classroom.

On medical volunteer programs, volunteers should come prepared to help where needed and maintain an adaptable mentality. It can be less possible to specify your particular requirements for the project, since the focus is most aligned with supporting the community and assisting where the most help is needed, at the time you’re there. Medical volunteer projects are often open for pre med school students through to qualified professionals. Medical volunteers who spend more time on their programs have scope to become better integrated over time, gaining increased insight into culture and healthcare practices. It can take some time to become familiar with the healthcare system in a foreign country, and once you have done that, you can enhance your understanding and fulfil a rewarding experience.

Unless you have a strong preference for either a medical internship or a medical volunteer program, then the best approach for deciding what is right for you is to consider them equally and concentrate more on finding a program that appeals to you the most. This may take into consideration the destination options that are available for both medical volunteer and medical internships abroad. Regardless of whether you participate as an intern or volunteer, it’s important to keep in mind that your level of skill and expertise will influence the activities you’re permitted to do. Both medical interns and medical volunteers should not expect to be hands on or directly responsible for patients if they are not qualified to do so. Often, the role may be primarily focused on shadowing and observing local professionals, as they guide you throughout the experience.

What is the difference between an international medical internship vs. volunteer project?

[International medical internships] (https://www.internhq.com/internships-by-field/healthcare-and-special-needs/)) and [medical volunteering] (https://www.volunteerhq.org/volunteer-abroad-projects/medical-and-health/) trips can often be similar, how do you decide which one is best for you?

Internships are great for medical students because they can be tailored to give you course credit, especially if you’re aiming to fulfill a specific number of placement hours. They are more flexible and customizable based on your requirements and interests, and are good options for those looking to gain more tangible benefits focused on your own goals and objectives for personal and professional development.

Medical internships can often be chosen according to specific interests, such as Nutrition, Pharmacy, Midwifery, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, and more.

Given that volunteers are asked to altruistically assist where the most need for help is, activities may be less aligned to your own goals and desired learning outcomes. It may be less possible to specify your particular requirements and preferences and - while interns are also required to be flexible and adapt - this may be even more evident for medical volunteers.

Unless you have a strong preference for either a medical internship or a medical volunteer experience, then the best approach for deciding what is right for you is to consider them equally and concentrate more on finding a program that appeals to you the most. This may take into consideration the destination options that are available for both medical volunteer and medical internships abroad. Regardless of whether you participate as an intern or volunteer, it’s important to keep in mind that your level of skill and expertise will always influence the activities you’re permitted to do. Both medical interns and medical volunteers should not expect to be hands on or directly responsible for patients if they are not qualified to do so. Often, the role may be primarily focused on shadowing and observing local professionals, as they guide you throughout the experience.

What are the advantages of doing a Medical Internship Abroad?

Staying at home to do your medical internship is great, but a medical internship abroad gives you the opportunity to observe foreign healthcare systems and appreciate different approaches to addressing complex healthcare issues. It’s a fantastic way to give you a fully rounded appreciation of medicine and even develop second language skills to boost your career. Your willingness to travel to get that unique insight looks great on your resume!

The acquisition of cultural intelligence, increased confidence and essential soft skills, are key reasons why international internship experiences are highly valued and rewarding. Soft skills are also invaluable to employers. Competencies related to resilience, emotional intelligence, adaptability and communication are often the biggest gaps in graduate credentials. If you want to excel in a career related to healthcare, then you need to ensure you’re pursuing opportunities to boost these real-world interpersonal skills.

Medical internships are available worldwide. From destinations with state of the art technology, to those where healthcare facilities can be more under-resourced, traveling abroad for your internship can provide a more comprehensive understanding of culture, global diversity and nuanced challenges.

Wherever you go, come prepared to learn and connect with the local communities that open their doors to you. Medical interns often have the opportunity to make a difference through their contribution. However, the emphasis of the experience will be on how the internship placement creates space for personal growth within a supportive environment. Be ready to learn, observe, ask questions, collaborate, and discover new approaches and ideas which enrich your knowledge and education!

How can I gain academic credit via a Medical internship?

International medical electives serve as a valuable learning tool for students and even qualified healthcare professionals alike. If you’re looking for a medical internship or elective placement in order to gain course credit or fulfill study requirements, it’s important to first understand the criteria you need to complete. For example, it may be completing a certain number of experiential learning hours or ensuring that you’re exposed to specific activities to complement your theoretical knowledge.

While narrowing down your search for the perfect internship, be sure to communicate exactly what your requirements are for the internship. Intern Abroad HQ can advise students accordingly and ensure that learning goals are prioritized. Just keep in mind that internship activities within the medical field are always subject to the variables of patient flow and patient needs. Therefore, sometimes, activities and day-to-day routines can be a little unpredictable. In all cases students who participate in a medical internship abroad should prepare to engage as flexibly and proactively as possible.

If you wish to obtain academic credit via your internship with Intern Abroad HQ, there are multiple options. You could save thousands of dollars in tuition fees by gaining course credits via one of the available School of Record partnerships. The average number of internship hours per week varies by program, but generally 40-45 internship hours equates to 1 week of interning. The longer your internship abroad, the more credits you stand to gain. Just enroll for your internship, select the additional tuition add-on, and you’re on the right track!

After you have completed your international internship, you will receive an unofficial transcript from one of Intern Abroad HQ’s Schools of Record. The transcript will include a course code, number of credits earned, and a letter grade, which would be based on submitted assignments throughout the internship. Official transcripts can be requested for easy credit transfer back to your home institution, including outside the US if your institution accepts US transcripts. What does the intern abroad Program Fee cover?

Intern Abroad HQ offers guidance for planning your internship, in addition to pre-departure support for assistance at every step. Similar to study abroad packages, international internships have a Program Fee in place, since living expenses and support need to be covered when you’re abroad. For example, an internship Program Fee package includes arrangement of your internship placement, pre-departure support, airport pick-up, orientation, in-country support, an experiential learning framework, accommodation and - in some cases - meals may also be provided during the experience. (If you’re still wondering why you should pay for an international internship placement, click here).

The cost of an intern abroad Program Fee depends on a number of variables:

  • The destination you choose. Some locations are more affordable than others, since the cost of living varies around the world.
  • The Program Fee inclusions. Some internships include select meals and some do not.
  • Your chosen internship duration. The longer you stay, the higher the Program Fee, since it covers accommodation. If you wish to secure a more economical Program Fee for your internship experience, then consider a short-term program.

The Program Fee payment to intern abroad is usually covered in two installments:

  1. Pay a deposit, to secure your participation. This is the first step. The deposit payment serves as the first installment of your total Program Fee cost. The sooner you pay the deposit to confirm your participation, the better, since advance planning is often associated with better budgeting and a smoother experience.

  2. Pay the remaining balance of your Program Fee secondarily. If you plan in advance, then you may qualify for an interest-free payment plan, designed to make your Program Fee payments more manageable and stress-free. Just ensure that you plan your international internship in advance, to take full advantage. Learn more here.
