My two sons and I had a wonderful experience teaching English in a rural village in China. Even if you aren't a language learner who is embarking on this voyage to conquer the Chinese language, if you enjoy trying all sorts of new activities and experiencing new phenomena, you will never be disappointed by the novelties China has to offer every single day. From the children, to the food, to the gifts you will receive, to the cities you will walk through, and the mountains you will climb, only a desire to show some little students how they can be able to speak with you is needed to emerge from this program successfully.

Coming from this journey, I have double my previous knowledge of the Mandarin language, Chinese friends (young and old) with whom I still stay in touch, experience with Chinese culture and the celebrations and traditions that pepper the year with family gatherings and festivals, a brand new palate for Chinese food (real Chinese food), a greater understanding of the second world power on the globe, and countless stories that still come back to me every day.

Day 1: Beijing. Arrive at any time.

Today's activities:
  • Meet your CEO and group: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.

Day 2: Beijing. Enjoy an included visit to the Great Wall. Later, explore Tiananmen Square. 

Accommodation: Dong Fang Hotel Beijing (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Orientation with CEO: Enjoy a brief walk with your CEO. He/she will give you some tips on finding things like supermarkets, main squares, and ATMs. For more specific or in-depth information, an official guided tour is recommended.
  • Private Vehicle: Beijing - Mutianyu, 1 hour and 30 minutes. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Mutianyu Great Wall Visit: Climb the rolling hills of Huairou County at Mutianyu, one of the best-preserved sections of the Great Wall. Enjoy scenic views as the wall winds along mountain ridges, and take brag-worthy photos of the wall from any of the 22 towers. The Great Wall is an incredible piece of engineering stretching 6000 km west from the mountain ridges north of Beijing. It was originally constructed to protect Chinese empires from nomadic northern tribes, and even though it failed in this purpose, it's still one of the country's most remarkable achievements and an iconic destination. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is located about 80km away from the Beijing City Center. The walk is approximately 5 kilometres and will take 2 to 3 hours depending on your level of fitness.
  • Private Vehicle: Mutianyu - Beijing, 1 hour and 30 minutes. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Tiananmen Square: Explore one of the world's largest public squares and the symbolic centre of Chinese power. Framed by the Gate of Heavenly Peace with its Mao portrait, Mao's Mausoleum, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum, and with elaborate flag raising and lowering ceremonies at dawn and dusk, it's a place of pilgrimage for the Chinese tourists who consider it the heart of their nation.

Day 3: Beijing/Xi'an. Take the Beijing metro to visit the Forbidden City. Later, board a fast train to Xi'an.

  • Metro: Beijing - Beijing. Get around underground via public transit.
  • Forbidden City Tour: Our CEO will steer around crowds and help make the most of a visit to the Forbidden City.
    Bullet Train: Beijing - Xi'an. Get to your next destination faster than the speed of light (ok maybe not that fast) aboard a high-speed train.
Due to restrictions in China after the pandemic, the maximum daily capacity in the Forbidden City has been reduced from 80,000 to 30,000. This significant decrease in daily tickets has had a great impact on availability for both individuals and group tours to secure tickets, especially during he summer season. Our local team works very hard to secure tickets for each group. However, on the off chance we are unable to secure tickets to the Forbidden City, we will visit the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven, places of similar architecture and importance.

Day 4: Xi'an/Suzhou. Visit one of China's greatest archaeological treasures—the Terracotta Warriors. Continue exploring Xi'an with a visit to the Ancient City Wall and the Muslim Quarters. Tonight, board an overnight train to Suzhou.

Meals included: Lunch
Accommodation: Basic Overnight Train (beds) - Overnight Train

Today's activities:
  • Terracotta Warriors Guided Tour: Take a guided tour of the Terracotta Warriors where more than 8,000 clay soldiers and hundreds of replica horses and chariots stand in three pits. Learn why the Emperor Qin Shihuang commissioned the statues to serve as his army in the afterlife and how they were discovered. Spend a half-day exploring this archaeological wonder.
  • Xi'an Ancient City Wall: Visit the ancient City Wall of Xi'An. Learn of its interesting history as part of the Silk Road and admire amazing views of the city.
  • Muslim Quarter Visit: Explore the lively Muslim Quarter and its serene Great Mosque, making time to indulge in the offerings of exotic local street food stalls. At night, head out for some of the best street food in China—the spicy beef and lamb kebabs are always a favorite.
  • Basic Overnight Train (beds): Xi'an - Suzhou, 14 hours. Experience overnight travel like a local. Sit back and get some well-earned (and likely much-needed) rest en route to your next stop.

Day 5: Suzhou. Wake this morning and grab coffee and a snack on the train as you prepare to pull into Suzhou. After arrival, visit Suzhou's famed Master of the Nets Garden, one of the most beautiful gardens in China and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander around Shantang Street. Enjoy a free dinner before riding the metro back to the hotel with your CEO.

Accommodation: Castle Hotel Suzhou (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Master of the Nets Garden Tour: Tour through the serene classical garden and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Shangtang Street: Wander around Shantang Street and canal with your CEO before enjoying free time in the area for dinner.

Day 6: Suzhou/Shanghai. This morning, ride the bullet train to Shanghai. Join your CEO for an orientation walk of the famed Bund and Nanjing Shopping Road before a free evening in Shanghai.

Accommodation: Zhen Yue Hotel (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Bullet Train: Suzhou - Shanghai, 30 minutes. Get to your next destination faster than the speed of light (ok maybe not that fast) aboard a high-speed train.
  • Orientation Walk: Take a stroll along the Bund, a main road that follows the Huangpu River, with your CEO. This is a great opportunity to get a layout of the city and figure out what you want to explore next.

Day 7: Shanghai. This morning, join your CEO for an orientation walk around the city to see the shops and historic buildings. Join your CEO at the Shanghai Museum or head out to venture through this beautiful city on your own. Maybe start with a visit to the nearby Yuyuan Gardens.

Accommodation: Zhen Yue Hotel (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Shanghai Orientation Walk: Explore the famous Huangpu District in central Shanghai with your CEO.
  • Shanghai Museum: Visit Shanghai Museum, home to a world-class collection of ancient Chinese art. Tour individual galleries devoted to such items as sculpture, bronze, ceramics, jade, coins, Ming and Qing Dynasty furniture, paintings, and calligraphy. Stop at the gift shop on your way out.
  • Free Time: Take advantage of your free time today to visit Yuyuan Gardens, return to the Bund, or do some shopping on Nanjing Road.

Day 8: Shanghai. Depart at any time.

This immersive cultural program is set in the rural village of Fengyan, near Guilin which is a fitting location for exploring traditional Chinese life. Through visits to local villages, ancient temples, local fairs, and breathtaking natural sites, you'll gain firsthand insight into rural Chinese culture.

Despite its global prominence and rich history, China remains one of the most misunderstood countries, especially in the West. This Culture Week moves beyond political narratives and tourist hotspots, offering a rare, authentic look into the customs, daily lives, and values of rural communities.

You will explore concepts like face and guanxi through real-life experiences, such as visiting traditional homes and learning their historical significance. You'll gain a deeper understanding at sites like the Confucius and Guan Gong temples (not just as monuments, but as cultural touchstones).

The program includes hands-on activities such as dumpling making, oil tea tasting, basic language lessons, chinese paper cutting, mahjong learning, traditional yao herbal shampoo & head massage, hiking, Tai Chi, bamboo rafting calligraphy, and traditional rituals. These experiences are complemented by discussions with both Chinese and Western participants, promoting meaningful dialogue about cultural differences.

Developed by Chinese experts with global learners in mind, this week is the perfect introduction to the real China in both its heritage and its modern-day reality. One simple rule applies: if you're curious, ask.

Itinerary:

Monday
Your adventure begins with a guided tour of Fengyan Village, a historic Yao ethnic community with over 400 years of rich heritage. Stroll through its timeworn alleyways and admire traditional Yao architecture, including houses that have stood for more than 150 years.

Next, lace up your hiking shoes for a scenic trek up a nearby mountain, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of a sea of persimmon trees stretching across the landscape.

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in a Chinese language lesson, followed by a cultural session exploring Chinese philosophies and local customs and taboos.

As evening falls, unwind with traditional pastimes such as Mahjong or Chinese chess, or enjoy a classic Chinese film.

Tuesday
Start your day with a visit to a local Yao family, where you’ll learn how to make oil tea (often called “Chinese coffee”) and enjoy a hearty, traditional Yao breakfast.

Later, participate in a peaceful Tai Chi session, then delve into the traditions and meanings behind Chinese festivals in a cultural workshop.

In the late afternoon, head to Hongyan Village for a mix of adventure and nature. Climb forested paths, enjoy sweeping views, and try your hand at bamboo rafting on a tranquil river.

Evening entertainment includes Mahjong, Chinese chess, or a Chinese movie.

Wednesday
After breakfast, sharpen your practical skills with a Chinese language lesson focused on shopping and bargaining. Then, put your new vocabulary to the test at Lianhua Town's local market.

Following lunch, enjoy a deep dive into Chinese food culture, discovering the rich variety of regional cuisines. In the hands-on portion, learn to make dumplings or baozi, and prepare other traditional dishes under the guidance of local instructors.

Thursday
Begin your morning with a fun and interactive Chinese songs lesson, then express your creativity in a calligraphy class, learning the art of brush and ink.

In the afternoon, take your learning outdoors with visits to cultural landmarks: the Confucius Temple, the Guangdong Temple, and a scenic walk along the Cha River.

You’ll also explore the Gongcheng Yao People's Museum, gaining deeper insight into the Yao community’s history, customs, and traditions.

Wrap up the day with free time, perhaps a visit to a local supermarket,  and in the evening, enjoy a BBQ at the center.

Friday
Kick off your final day with a Chinese language session, followed by a creative Chinese paper crafting workshop.

The afternoon is yours to relax, reflect on your experiences, or get ready for a weekend adventure of your choice.

  • Participants over 65 years old: Due to the program's physical activities, a medical clearance proving your fitness is mandatory.
  • Physical fitness: This program involves extended activity periods and some outdoor time under the sun. A decent level of fitness is essential.

Clothing
  • Your clothes must not be too short, too tight, or too revealing. Kindly make sure your shoulders and legs are covered..
  • It is completely fine to wear Western clothes as long as they fit the local standards.
  • Be thoughtful of the graphics, symbols, or text printed on your clothing, and avoid wearing clothing styles that might be inappropriate, particularly inside the school premises.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals. Good shoes for the mountain walks
  • Sun hat, fleece sweater, windproof rain jacket (depending on weather)

  • Muslim Quarter Visit: Explore the lively Muslim Quarter and its serene Great Mosque, making time to indulge in the offerings of exotic local street food stalls. At night, head out for some of the best street food in China—the spicy beef and lamb kebabs are always a favorite.
  • Basic Overnight Train (beds): Xi'an - Suzhou, 14 hours. Experience overnight travel like a local. Sit back and get some well-earned (and likely much-needed) rest en route to your next stop.

Day 5: Suzhou. Wake this morning and grab coffee and a snack on the train as you prepare to pull into Suzhou. After arrival, visit Suzhou's famed Master of the Nets Garden, one of the most beautiful gardens in China and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander around Shantang Street. Enjoy a free dinner before riding the metro back to the hotel with your CEO.

Today's activities:
  • Master of the Nets Garden Tour: Tour through the serene classical garden and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Shangtang Street: Wander around Shantang Street and canal with your CEO before enjoying free time in the area for dinner.

Day 6: Suzhou/Shanghai. This morning, ride the bullet train to Shanghai. Join your CEO for an orientation walk of the famed Bund and Nanjing Shopping Road before a free evening in Shanghai.

Accommodation: Zhen Yue Hotel (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Bullet Train: Suzhou - Shanghai, 30 minutes. Get to your next destination faster than the speed of light (ok maybe not that fast) aboard a high-speed train.
  • Orientation Walk: Take a stroll along the Bund, a main road that follows the Huangpu River, with your CEO. This is a great opportunity to get a layout of the city and figure out what you want to explore next.

Day 7: Shanghai. This morning, join your CEO for an orientation walk around the city to see the shops and historic buildings. Join your CEO at the Shanghai Museum or head out to venture through this beautiful city on your own. Maybe start with a visit to the nearby Yuyuan Gardens.

Accommodation: Zhen Yue Hotel (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Shanghai Orientation Walk: Explore the famous Huangpu District in central Shanghai with your CEO.
  • Shanghai Museum: Visit Shanghai Museum, home to a world-class collection of ancient Chinese art. Tour individual galleries devoted to such items as sculpture, bronze, ceramics, jade, coins, Ming and Qing Dynasty furniture, paintings, and calligraphy. Stop at the gift shop on your way out.
  • Free Time: Take advantage of your free time today to visit Yuyuan Gardens, return to the Bund, or do some shopping on Nanjing Road.

Day 8: Shanghai. Depart at any time.

This immersive cultural program is set in the rural village of Fengyan, near Guilin which is a fitting location for exploring traditional Chinese life. Through visits to local villages, ancient temples, local fairs, and breathtaking natural sites, you'll gain firsthand insight into rural Chinese culture.

Despite its global prominence and rich history, China remains one of the most misunderstood countries, especially in the West. This Culture Week moves beyond political narratives and tourist hotspots, offering a rare, authentic look into the customs, daily lives, and values of rural communities.

You will explore concepts like face and guanxi through real-life experiences, such as visiting traditional homes and learning their historical significance. You'll gain a deeper understanding at sites like the Confucius and Guan Gong temples (not just as monuments, but as cultural touchstones).

The program includes hands-on activities such as dumpling making, oil tea tasting, basic language lessons, chinese paper cutting, mahjong learning, traditional yao herbal shampoo & head massage, hiking, Tai Chi, bamboo rafting calligraphy, and traditional rituals. These experiences are complemented by discussions with both Chinese and Western participants, promoting meaningful dialogue about cultural differences.

Developed by Chinese experts with global learners in mind, this week is the perfect introduction to the real China in both its heritage and its modern-day reality. One simple rule applies: if you're curious, ask.

Itinerary:

Monday
Your adventure begins with a guided tour of Fengyan Village, a historic Yao ethnic community with over 400 years of rich heritage. Stroll through its timeworn alleyways and admire traditional Yao architecture, including houses that have stood for more than 150 years.

Next, lace up your hiking shoes for a scenic trek up a nearby mountain, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of a sea of persimmon trees stretching across the landscape.

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in a Chinese language lesson, followed by a cultural session exploring Chinese philosophies and local customs and taboos.

As evening falls, unwind with traditional pastimes such as Mahjong or Chinese chess, or enjoy a classic Chinese film.

Tuesday
Start your day with a visit to a local Yao family, where you’ll learn how to make oil tea (often called “Chinese coffee”) and enjoy a hearty, traditional Yao breakfast.

Later, participate in a peaceful Tai Chi session, then delve into the traditions and meanings behind Chinese festivals in a cultural workshop.

In the late afternoon, head to Hongyan Village for a mix of adventure and nature. Climb forested paths, enjoy sweeping views, and try your hand at bamboo rafting on a tranquil river.

Evening entertainment includes Mahjong, Chinese chess, or a Chinese movie.

Wednesday
After breakfast, sharpen your practical skills with a Chinese language lesson focused on shopping and bargaining. Then, put your new vocabulary to the test at Lianhua Town's local market.

Following lunch, enjoy a deep dive into Chinese food culture, discovering the rich variety of regional cuisines. In the hands-on portion, learn to make dumplings or baozi, and prepare other traditional dishes under the guidance of local instructors.

Thursday
Begin your morning with a fun and interactive Chinese songs lesson, then express your creativity in a calligraphy class, learning the art of brush and ink.

In the afternoon, take your learning outdoors with visits to cultural landmarks: the Confucius Temple, the Guangdong Temple, and a scenic walk along the Cha River.

You’ll also explore the Gongcheng Yao People's Museum, gaining deeper insight into the Yao community’s history, customs, and traditions.

Wrap up the day with free time, perhaps a visit to a local supermarket,  and in the evening, enjoy a BBQ at the center.

Friday
Kick off your final day with a Chinese language session, followed by a creative Chinese paper crafting workshop.

The afternoon is yours to relax, reflect on your experiences, or get ready for a weekend adventure of your choice.

Note: This schedule is subject to change based on weather, local conditions, and unforeseen circumstances. Flexibility is part of the journey!

Additional Requirements
  • Participants over 65 years old: Due to the program's physical activities, a medical clearance proving your fitness is mandatory.
  • Physical fitness: This program involves extended activity periods and some outdoor time under the sun. A decent level of fitness is essential.

Clothing
  • Your clothes must not be too short, too tight, or too revealing. Kindly make sure your shoulders and legs are covered..
  • It is completely fine to wear Western clothes as long as they fit the local standards.
  • Be thoughtful of the graphics, symbols, or text printed on your clothing, and avoid wearing clothing styles that might be inappropriate, particularly inside the school premises.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals. Good shoes for the mountain walks
  • Sun hat, fleece sweater, windproof rain jacket (depending on weather)

Health & Safety:
  • Hand sanitizer, face masks (if required)
  • First-aid kit (medications, sunscreen, insect repellent, rehydration tablets)

Essentials:
