I made lots of great friends and had a great time volunteering and exploring Puerto Rico. The experience was life-changing and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Puerto Rico is a beautiful country with beautiful people and I would go back any chance that I could. If you are hesitant about going an IVHQ trip, don't be. I was at first too, but the friends I made and the experiences I had made this one of the best weeks of my life!

I find that not only visiting new locations helps you understand outside your own life you are used to but also helping in service and getting to do small acts help out the local community in small ways. I gained new knowledge about the environmental status of Puerto Rico and the importance of preserving the urban gardens and forests in this space; I also learned about the longstanding impact of Hurricane Maria. I gained a deeper understanding of Puerto Rican culture as well by living in San Juan for two weeks and exploring the city. I would tell someone to join this program because the work is important and the help is needed. It is also an amazing way to meet other volunteers who share the same passions regarding supporting the ecosystem!

From this experience, I gained so much personal growth, confidence, and a deeper sense of empathy. Mentoring the kids was truly the highlight for me—I loved building those connections, and I know the memories I made will stay with me for a lifetime. For anyone who is hesitant about joining this program, my advice is simple: if you’re thinking about it, just do it. It is an amazing experience, and the positive reviews are truly well earned. At first, my mom was worried, but her concerns went away once she saw how organized everything was—the checklist, the trainings, and the constant communication with the program manager and local team made a big difference.
Overall, I feel like I grew so much from this experience, and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone considering it.
