Helping to build and renovate in local communities is a tangible way of making a contribution for the people who live there. By volunteering alongside locals to improve the infrastructure in rural townships, you know you’ll be making a lasting impact for years to come.
This project focuses on the construction and renovation of clinics, community centres, toilet facilities and schools. Your tasks can include painting, brick laying, plastering, digging, block shaping, carpentry, steel bending and mortar mixing. Keep in mind that projects and volunteer roles will vary from community to community, so come prepared willing to help out wherever your support is most needed.
You may also have the opportunity to meet chiefs and community elders, and learn about Ghanaian culture through music and dance.
If you are passionate about being outdoors and have a good level of fitness, this will be a perfect project for you. You aren’t required to have experience in construction to participate, as you will work closely with members of our local team who will guide your work each day. Volunteering hours are in the morning and evening, to avoid the hottest part of the day. You can supplement your time by contributing to other projects between shifts if you like.
Please note that this project has an extra cost of US$49 (approximately AU$66) per week for the additional supervision, materials and logistics required. This amount will be included in the Program Fee quoted to you by IVHQ when you apply. Volunteers should bring a flashlight, a lightweight scarf for sun protection, a hat, insect repellent, gloves, working boots and water bottle.
