Day 1:
Travel from the volunteer accommodation in Arusha to Lake Eyasi located at the base of the Serengeti Plateau. Volunteers will have an evening visit to Lake Eyasi to watch the flamingos before spending the night in a local village.

Day 2:
The following morning you will get the chance to go hunting with the Hadzabe tribe and visit a traditional blacksmith before travelling back to Arusha.

Timing: this tour leaves around 9 am and returns between 3-5 pm.

  • As per our terms and conditions, if cancelled, add-ons are non-refundable once payment has been made, but may be held as a credit on a case by case basis depending on the cancellation terms of the local team.
  • Tipping is best practice in Tanzania and if you would like to tip your local guide, TZS 30,000 is the average tip per person.
The price is quoted for 6 or more volunteers taking part on the tour. If there are fewer volunteers taking part on the tour, the cost will be higher. Any difference will need to be paid directly to the local team in-country before starting the tour.

Volunteers on the Maasai Immersion project:
The Maasai Immersion project is located about 2 hours away from Arusha. Due to the remoteness of the project, volunteers who wish to go back to Arusha and take part on tours over the weekends, will need to arrange transportation with the local team directly at an extra cost of US$70 per vehicle, for up to 4 passengers. Please note that this doesn't apply to safaris, as the local team can pick up volunteers from the Maasai village on the way out to the wildlife parks and reserves.

Travel from the volunteer accommodation in Arusha to visit the Chemka Hot Springs.

The Chemka Hot Springs are an oasis in the hinterland of the Kilimanjaro region, located about 120 km (a 2-3 hour drive) from Arusha City. These idyllic underground springs feature crystal-clear, turquoise waters, providing a perfect retreat after a strenuous Kilimanjaro climb or an adventurous wilderness safari. They are also an ideal destination for day-trippers of all ages and activity levels. Whether you prefer tranquillity or activity, Chemka Hot Springs invite you to linger, swim, and explore.

The pond is very deep, reaching depths of up to 10 meters in some areas, yet the water is so clear you can easily see the bottom. The water is warm, not hot. On the shore, under lush trees, you can enjoy your snacks or soak up the sun.

Timing: this tour leaves around 6 am and returns between 7-8 pm.
Tipping is best practice in Tanzania and if you would like to tip your local guide, TZS 10,000 is the average tip per person.

Day 1 • Nairobi
Karibu! Welcome to Kenya. Your adventure begins in Nairobi – Kenya’s capital – with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight, where you’ll meet your local leader and fellow travellers. If you arrive early, maybe head out and explore the National Museum of Kenya, the Karen Blixen Museum or the highly recommended Bomas of Kenya, where traditional homesteads of several Kenyan tribes are displayed in an outdoor village. When you've met your new travel buds, why not join the group for an optional group dinner and get to know each other better.

Day 2 • Maasai Mara National Reserve
Transfer from Nairobi to the famous Maasai Mara – one of the best game reserves in Africa. On the way, you'll stop in Loita Hills – a remote region home to the traditional Maasai people. This is one of the key places where the Maasai people still practice their traditional way of life, with little influence from the Western world. Visit the Tepesua Village, known for championing Maasai women’s health and education. Maasai Warriors will welcome you here by way of traditional song and dance. Meet your hosts and attend a talk full of insights into this remarkable and ancient culture. Take a walk to the community village, which was founded for widows who can never remarry and lost their cows due to drought. The village offers support, safety and economic growth through the Tepesua Widows Income Project. Here, the women make handicrafts and sew handbags using sustainable materials as well as washable sanitary pads and backpacks to sell to visitors and locals. Learn about village life and be shown around a traditional Maasai home and its cattle enclosures. Continue to the outskirts of the Maasai Mara, where your permanent tented camp can be found.

Day 3 • Maasai Mara National Reserve
This morning, you have the option to take part in a hot air balloon ride and bush breakfast, giving you a rare chance to see the open plains at sunrise, teeming with wildlife (budget an additional US$500 for this activity). After, explore the Maasai Mara in 4WD safari vehicles with game drives in the morning and the afternoon today to give you the best chance to spot the Big Five. This is the quintessential African experience, and with sparse open plains and some of the world's most impressive animals, you won't soon forget this one. Keep your eyes peeled for wildebeest, lions, leopards, antelope and giraffes along the way.

Day 4 • Lake Victoria
Get ready for a long travel day as you journey toward the Kenya-Tanzania border and make your way to the magnificent Lake Victoria. This vast lake is the main source of the Nile, the longest river in the world, and spans the shores of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. On arrival, unwind with a lakeside dinner while you ponder the magnitude of the world’s largest tropical lake.

Day 5 • Serengeti National Park
Enjoy a relaxed morning, taking in the magnificent views of Lake Victoria in the morning light. Travel to Serengeti National Park, renowned for its incredible wildlife and vast, open landscapes. After passing through the park gate, experience the greatest commute possible as we slowly make our way to our permanent tented camp via the 'scenic safari route.' Along the way, stop to take photos of the abundant wildlife and stunning views. Tonight, you'll have a true African safari experience – with your comfortable safari camp set right in the heart of the Serengeti. After dinner, gather around the campfire to share stories, then fall asleep to the sounds of the wild.

Day 6 • Serengeti National Park
Wake to another glorious day in the Serengeti National Park. Start the day with an early morning 4WD safari to spot the wildlife when they're at their most active. Then, return to camp for a relaxed brunch. This afternoon, head off again for another drive through the park. Return to camp for dinner and another night under the Serengeti's stars.

Day 7 • Karatu
Enjoy a final game drive through the Serengeti National Park this morning as you exit your camp inside the park and make your way to the park gate. From here, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation area, where you'll hop in the park's 4WD jeeps and descend to the crater floor. The jeeps have an open roof, and the animals here are less wary of humans and vehicles, which makes watching them up close easier. Take in the spectacular views from the crater's rim as you make your way to the bottom, where animals roam the lakes, rivers, woodlands and hills. Keep an eye out for wildebeest, lion, zebra, cheetah, buffalo, gazelle, endangered black rhino and the colourfully dressed Maasai people who often water their cattle at the lake here. This afternoon, leave the Ngorongoro Crater and drive to Karatu – a small town on its outskirts and your base for the next two nights.

Day 8 • Karatu
After breakfast, make your way towards Lake Eyasi, a vast seasonal soda lake, stopping at a scenic viewpoint to take in the magnificent views across its shimmering waters. The area surrounding Lake Eyasi has been home to the Hadzabe people for more than 10,000 years and is one of the few places in Africa where traditional tribal life continues with little modern influence. Today’s visit to the Hadzabe lands offers fascinating insight into this ancient culture and a chance to learn about their way of life. Meet community members and take part in daily activities such as hunting, gathering, and traditional dance, while learning about their unique ‘click’ language — believed to be one of the oldest still spoken today. Return to your lodge in Karatu later in the day to relax and unwind.

Day 9 • Arusha
Today is a free day to relax or choose from the various optional activities available from your base in Karatu. You might like to head to a local coffee plantation or take a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. Maybe opt for a hike through the Ngorongoro Reserve Forest to Elephant Caves accompanied by an expert local guide and armed ranger. This is the perfect way to stretch your legs after a few days of travel. You'll hike through the Ngorongoro rainforest as your local guide explains the ins and outs of the area and points out interesting animal tracks and footprints. Marvel at the wild landscape and spot the varied birdlife as you walk. In the afternoon, you’ll head to Arusha, where you spend your last night.

Day 10 • Arusha / Nairobi
Your adventure comes to an end after breakfast today. A departure transfer to either Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) can be booked at an additional expense. Alternatively, you can continue with your crew to finish in Nairobi where you'll be dropped at a centrally located hotel, however, no accommodation will be provided tonight. If you want to extend your stay in Arusha or Nairobi, just get in touch with your booking agent to organise additional accommodation.

Itinerary 

Day 1: Nairobi. Arrive at any time. Tonight after a brief welcome meeting, choose to get to know your group members with an optional group dinner at a nearby local restaurant in Nairobi.

Today's activities: 
  • Your Welcome Moment: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.
  • Nairobi: This busy metropolis and capital city has an intoxicating mix of African and Indian culture, which are both well-represented in the local cuisine. Enjoy artsy cafes with a cup of famous Kenyan coffee, and bring your dancing shoes -- Nairobi has a fantastic nightlife. For a taste of history and archaeology, visit the National Museum, home to most of the great prehistoric finds made by the famous Leakey family.

Day 2: Nairobi/Arusha. Travel by public shuttle through the semi-arid lands of the Maasai people and cross the border into Tanzania. Search the horizon for views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance and arrive to Arusha in the evening. Stops will be made along the way for you to have lunch and dinner on your own.

Day 3: Arusha/Serengeti National Park. Prepare for a wildlife safari experience in one of the most famous national parks in Africa; the Serengeti. Travel from Arusha and begin a 3-day, 2-night excursion with a safari drive through the park.

Today's activities:
  • Serengeti National Park Safari: This is the reason you came to Africa. Charge your camera, grab your binoculars, and set out on safari. Your eagle-eyed driver will keep an eye out for wildlife – buffaloes, elephants, lions, wildebeests, zebras, and more. Tanzania’s Serengeti tends to be less crowded than some of Kenya’s reserves, so enjoy the scenery, the vast expanse of the grasslands, the play of light and shadow, and the up-close look at wild Africa.
  • 7-Seat 4x4 Safari Vehicle: Arusha - Serengeti National Park, 10 hours. Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.
The Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater portion of the trip will make use of specialized 4x4 7-seater safari vehicles, with experienced safari driver/guides, who will ensure wonderful wildlife encounters. The safari vehicles each have sliding windows and a large pop-up roof, perfect for viewing animals and scenery. The group will split up among several vehicles and your CEO will spend time in each vehicle over the next three days.


Day 4: Serengeti National Park/Ngorongoro. Head out on a final morning safari in the Serengeti before continuing on to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, famous for its magnificent wildlife viewing opportunities. Set up camp in the late afternoon near the crater rim and simply soak in this beautiful setting.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Ngorongoro/Arusha. Adventure down to the crater floor for a final safari experience in an area surrounded by the high walls. Exit the crater in the late morning and drive in the 4x4 safari vehicles back to Arusha. Stop along the way at Mto wa Mbu for a cultural walk and experience daily life in this rural town. Then, sit down for a traditional lunch with members from the local community.

  • Mto wa Mbu Community Visit and Lunch: Take part in a cultural walk to learn about life in this East African town. Mto wa Mbu has attracted some 18,000 residents from 120 different tribes. During the two-hour tour, visit the community's local market, go right to the farmer's fields, see how huts are constructed, and meet artisans in their shops. Afterwards, sit down with our new friends and enjoy a traditional lunch of meat and plantains.
  • Ngorongoro Crater Wildlife Safari Drive: Set the alarm and prepare for an early start to see the wonders of the Ngorongoro Crater. Masai herdsmen appear in the morning mist. Our driver/guide takes us down into the crater and drives us to all the best spots to view wildlife. Watch for zebra, gazelles, buffalo, and warthogs. The swamp and forest are home to hippos, rhinos, elephants, baboons, and monkeys. Keep your eyes peeled and camera ready to capture a pride of lions or a lone leopard walking along the savanna.

Day 6: Arusha/Bagamoyo. Depart from Arusha early in your private vehicle towards Bagamoyo. Enjoy the Tanzanian countryside passing by and be on the lookout for the blue waters of the Indian Ocean in the distance. The group will spend the night in Bagamoyo before transferring to Dar es Salaam and the island beaches of Zanzibar.

  • Private Vehicle: Arusha - Bagamoyo, 9 hours and 45 minutes. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

Day 7: Bagamoyo to Stone Town via Dar es Salaam. Travel from Bagamoyo to Dar es Salaam and hop on the ferry in the morning to the picturesque island beaches of Zanzibar. Spend the remainder of the day enjoying the sandy shores of this archipelago paradise. Set off on an orientation walk with your CEO in Stone Town.

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: Bagamoyo - Dar es Salaam, 2 hours and 15 minutes. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Ferry: Dar es Salaam - Stone Town, 1 hours and 30 minutes. Get to the next spot on your route aboard a convenient and efficient ferry boat.
  • Free time: Feel free to explore on your own, or join a guided tour.
  • Stone Town Orientation Walk: This orientation walk is just a brief introduction. If you'd like to learn more in depth information about Stone Town, we recommended going on a guided city tour.
Zanzibar is a Muslim society. Immodestly dressed women or men in shorts will get harassed and cause great offence in Stone Town. On the beach, customs are a little more relaxed, but travellers are encouraged to be respectful of the island's culture and cover up when walking around. Never try to take a photograph without asking permission.


Day 8: Beach day in Zanzibar. Explore the heart of Zanzibar on your own. Walk the winding streets, visit the various squares, and choose to try some tasty treats from pavement vendors. The group will travel to the tropical haven of Jambiani for the next few days.

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: Stone Town - Jambiani, 1 hours and 30 minutes. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Free time: Settle into island life and explore during some free time.

Day 9: Beach day in Zanzibar. Spend a free day in one of the world’s great cultural crossroads. Choose to partake in a diving experience, go snorkelling, hop aboard a sailing trip, or lounge on the beach listening to the nearby lapping waves in this East African paradise.

Today's activities:
  • Free time: Do as much or as little as you'd like on this island slice of paradise.

Day 10: Stone Town. Travel back to Stone Town from the other side of the island. The tour ends in the late morning upon arrival.

Day 1:
Setting off early morning after breakfast at the volunteer house or homestay you will drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park. You will enjoy a full day game drive in the park famous for its elephant population and stop at Matete picnic site for lunch. Overnight camping will be at Jambo campsite.

Day 2:
The next morning, you will enjoy breakfast at the campsite before driving approximately 3 hours to reach the incredible Ngorongoro Crater. Enjoy a half day game drive before driving back to your accommodation in Arusha in the late afternoon.

Start your adventure with a morning pick-up from the volunteer accommodation in Arusha, heading to the Marangu Gate (1,860m) of Kilimanjaro National Park. The scenic drive takes approximately 3 hours. After completing the necessary gate registration, you’ll begin your trek into the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest.

As you hike through the dense forest, be on the lookout for vibrant plant life and wildlife, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and an array of bird species. Our knowledgeable English-speaking guide will enrich your experience by sharing insights into Kilimanjaro’s unique ecosystem, pointing out the different plant and animal species you encounter. Along the way, you might meet climbers descending from the summit, inspiring you with their stories and fueling your own dreams of conquering the mountain.

After a 3-4 hour trek, you’ll reach Mandara Hut (2,720m), where you can rest and enjoy a well-deserved lunch. A short, 15-minute hike will then take you to the Maundi Crater, offering breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Northern Tanzania, and Kenya. Once you’ve soaked in the stunning vistas, you’ll begin your descent back to the Marangu Gate, a 2-3 hour walk, where your vehicle will be ready to take you back to the volunteer house. On the way back, relax and reflect on the day’s unforgettable experiences as you enjoy the sunset.

The Maasai Immersion project is located about 2 hours away from Arusha. Setting off from the volunteer house or homestay accommodation after an approximate one hour drive you will arrive at the Tarangire National Park. The Tarangire National Park has the highest density of elephants in North Tanzania and you can view these animals all year round in which the herds often can reach an impressive number of 300 animals.

The Tarangire River has water all year round and during the dry season, between July and October, many animals from the surrounding areas come to the river for drinking. If you visit the park during the dry season, you will witness an unforgettable natural wonder as you can observe wonderful creatures such as lions, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests and zebras as well as various types of antelopes and gazelles and with a little luck, you can also spot a python!

Around lunchtime, you will stop at a suitable picnic place before the afternoon is dedicated to more wildlife watching. Before sunset, you will be driven back to your accommodation.

Day 1:
You will leave the volunteer or homestay house early in the morning to start the approximately 6 hour drive to the Serengeti National Park . On the way, you will stop at the beautiful Ngorongoro view point to take photos of the incredible caldera. After enjoying a lunchbox at this point, you will continue to complete the drive to Nguchiro campsite. On the way you can expect to see monkeys, giraffe and possibly elephants.

Day 2:
Waking up in the Serengeti you will set off early to enjoy a full day game drive on the search for the big five and enjoying the full experience of the big cats behaviour, overnight again at Nguchiro camp.

Day 3:
Waking early again to drive from the Serengeti to Ngorongoro. Overnight at Simba campsite.

Day 4:

After a picturesque two-hour drive from Arusha, you'll reach a Maasai village where you'll be greeted with a lively and heartfelt welcome, accompanied by traditional singing and dancing. From the moment you arrive, you'll feel like part of the community, dressed in handcrafted garments and jewelry, and invited to join in the festivities.

You'll also have the chance to immerse yourself in daily Maasai life, from applying traditional makeup to witnessing how they sleep, eat, and work, all while gaining insight into their timeless customs and beliefs.

Timing: this tour leaves around 1 pm and returns between 7-8 pm.

Itinerary 

Day 1: Nairobi. Arrive at any time. Tonight after a brief welcome meeting, choose to get to know your group members with an optional group dinner at a nearby local restaurant in Nairobi.

Accommodation: The Heron Hotel Nairobi (or similar) - Hotel
Today's activities: 
  • Your Welcome Moment: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.
  • Nairobi: This busy metropolis and capital city has an intoxicating mix of African and Indian culture, which are both well-represented in the local cuisine. Enjoy artsy cafes with a cup of famous Kenyan coffee, and bring your dancing shoes -- Nairobi has a fantastic nightlife. For a taste of history and archaeology, visit the National Museum, home to most of the great prehistoric finds made by the famous Leakey family.

Day 2: Nairobi/Arusha. Travel by public shuttle through the semi-arid lands of the Maasai people and cross the border into Tanzania. Search the horizon for views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance and arrive to Arusha in the evening. Stops will be made along the way for you to have lunch and dinner on your own.

Today's activities:
  • Serengeti National Park Safari: This is the reason you came to Africa. Charge your camera, grab your binoculars, and set out on safari. Your eagle-eyed driver will keep an eye out for wildlife – buffaloes, elephants, lions, wildebeests, zebras, and more. Tanzania’s Serengeti tends to be less crowded than some of Kenya’s reserves, so enjoy the scenery, the vast expanse of the grasslands, the play of light and shadow, and the up-close look at wild Africa.
  • 7-Seat 4x4 Safari Vehicle: Arusha - Serengeti National Park, 10 hours. Get a better view and take better snapshots aboard this off-road ride with a pop-up top.
The Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater portion of the trip will make use of specialized 4x4 7-seater safari vehicles, with experienced safari driver/guides, who will ensure wonderful wildlife encounters. The safari vehicles each have sliding windows and a large pop-up roof, perfect for viewing animals and scenery. The group will split up among several vehicles and your CEO will spend time in each vehicle over the next three days.


Day 4: Serengeti National Park/Ngorongoro. Head out on a final morning safari in the Serengeti before continuing on to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, famous for its magnificent wildlife viewing opportunities. Set up camp in the late afternoon near the crater rim and simply soak in this beautiful setting.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Then, sit down for a traditional lunch with members from the local community.

  • Mto wa Mbu Community Visit and Lunch: Take part in a cultural walk to learn about life in this East African town. Mto wa Mbu has attracted some 18,000 residents from 120 different tribes. During the two-hour tour, visit the community's local market, go right to the farmer's fields, see how huts are constructed, and meet artisans in their shops. Afterwards, sit down with our new friends and enjoy a traditional lunch of meat and plantains.
  • Ngorongoro Crater Wildlife Safari Drive: Set the alarm and prepare for an early start to see the wonders of the Ngorongoro Crater. Masai herdsmen appear in the morning mist. Our driver/guide takes us down into the crater and drives us to all the best spots to view wildlife. Watch for zebra, gazelles, buffalo, and warthogs. The swamp and forest are home to hippos, rhinos, elephants, baboons, and monkeys. Keep your eyes peeled and camera ready to capture a pride of lions or a lone leopard walking along the savanna.

Day 6: Arusha/Bagamoyo. Depart from Arusha early in your private vehicle towards Bagamoyo. Enjoy the Tanzanian countryside passing by and be on the lookout for the blue waters of the Indian Ocean in the distance. The group will spend the night in Bagamoyo before transferring to Dar es Salaam and the island beaches of Zanzibar.

Day 7: Bagamoyo to Stone Town via Dar es Salaam. Travel from Bagamoyo to Dar es Salaam and hop on the ferry in the morning to the picturesque island beaches of Zanzibar. Spend the remainder of the day enjoying the sandy shores of this archipelago paradise. Set off on an orientation walk with your CEO in Stone Town.

  • Private Vehicle: Bagamoyo - Dar es Salaam, 2 hours and 15 minutes. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Ferry: Dar es Salaam - Stone Town, 1 hours and 30 minutes. Get to the next spot on your route aboard a convenient and efficient ferry boat.
  • Free time: Feel free to explore on your own, or join a guided tour.
  • Stone Town Orientation Walk: This orientation walk is just a brief introduction. If you'd like to learn more in depth information about Stone Town, we recommended going on a guided city tour.
Zanzibar is a Muslim society. Immodestly dressed women or men in shorts will get harassed and cause great offence in Stone Town. On the beach, customs are a little more relaxed, but travellers are encouraged to be respectful of the island's culture and cover up when walking around. Never try to take a photograph without asking permission.


Day 8: Beach day in Zanzibar. Explore the heart of Zanzibar on your own. Walk the winding streets, visit the various squares, and choose to try some tasty treats from pavement vendors. The group will travel to the tropical haven of Jambiani for the next few days.

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: Stone Town - Jambiani, 1 hours and 30 minutes. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

Day 9: Beach day in Zanzibar. Spend a free day in one of the world’s great cultural crossroads. Choose to partake in a diving experience, go snorkelling, hop aboard a sailing trip, or lounge on the beach listening to the nearby lapping waves in this East African paradise.

  • Free time: Do as much or as little as you'd like on this island slice of paradise.

Day 10: Stone Town. Travel back to Stone Town from the other side of the island. The tour ends in the late morning upon arrival.

Setting off early morning after breakfast at the volunteer house or homestay you will drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park. The scenic drive takes approximately 3 hours. After completing the necessary gate registration, you’ll begin your trek into the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest.

As you hike through the dense forest, be on the lookout for vibrant plant life and wildlife, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and an array of bird species. Our knowledgeable English-speaking guide will enrich your experience by sharing insights into Kilimanjaro’s unique ecosystem, pointing out the different plant and animal species you encounter. Along the way, you might meet climbers descending from the summit, inspiring you with their stories and fueling your own dreams of conquering the mountain.

After a 3-4 hour trek, you’ll reach Mandara Hut (2,720m), where you can rest and enjoy a well-deserved lunch. A short, 15-minute hike will then take you to the Maundi Crater, offering breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Northern Tanzania, and Kenya. Once you’ve soaked in the stunning vistas, you’ll begin your descent back to the Marangu Gate, a 2-3 hour walk, where your vehicle will be ready to take you back to the volunteer house. On the way back, relax and reflect on the day’s unforgettable experiences as you enjoy the sunset.

Day 1:
You will leave the volunteer or homestay house early in the morning to start the approximately 6 hour drive to the Serengeti National Park . On the way, you will stop at the beautiful Ngorongoro view point to take photos of the incredible caldera. After enjoying a lunchbox at this point, you will continue to complete the drive to Nguchiro campsite. On the way you can expect to see monkeys, giraffe and possibly elephants.

Day 2:
Waking up in the Serengeti you will set off early to enjoy a full day game drive on the search for the big five and enjoying the full experience of the big cats behaviour, overnight again at Nguchiro camp.

Day 3:
Waking early again to drive from the Serengeti to Ngorongoro. Overnight at Simba campsite.

Day 4:

Day 1 • Nairobi
Karibu! Welcome to Kenya. Your adventure begins in Nairobi – Kenya’s capital – with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight, where you’ll meet your local leader and fellow travellers. If you arrive early, maybe head out and explore the National Museum of Kenya, the Karen Blixen Museum or the highly recommended Bomas of Kenya, where traditional homesteads of several Kenyan tribes are displayed in an outdoor village. When you've met your new travel buds, why not join the group for an optional group dinner and get to know each other better.

Day 2 • Maasai Mara National Reserve
Transfer from Nairobi to the famous Maasai Mara – one of the best game reserves in Africa. On the way, you'll stop in Loita Hills – a remote region home to the traditional Maasai people. This is one of the key places where the Maasai people still practice their traditional way of life, with little influence from the Western world. Visit the Tepesua Village, known for championing Maasai women’s health and education. Maasai Warriors will welcome you here by way of traditional song and dance. Meet your hosts and attend a talk full of insights into this remarkable and ancient culture. Take a walk to the community village, which was founded for widows who can never remarry and lost their cows due to drought. The village offers support, safety and economic growth through the Tepesua Widows Income Project. Here, the women make handicrafts and sew handbags using sustainable materials as well as washable sanitary pads and backpacks to sell to visitors and locals. Learn about village life and be shown around a traditional Maasai home and its cattle enclosures. Continue to the outskirts of the Maasai Mara, where your permanent tented camp can be found.

Day 3 • Maasai Mara National Reserve
This morning, you have the option to take part in a hot air balloon ride and bush breakfast, giving you a rare chance to see the open plains at sunrise, teeming with wildlife (budget an additional US$500 for this activity). After, explore the Maasai Mara in 4WD safari vehicles with game drives in the morning and the afternoon today to give you the best chance to spot the Big Five. This is the quintessential African experience, and with sparse open plains and some of the world's most impressive animals, you won't soon forget this one. Keep your eyes peeled for wildebeest, lions, leopards, antelope and giraffes along the way.

Day 4 • Lake Victoria
Get ready for a long travel day as you journey toward the Kenya-Tanzania border and make your way to the magnificent Lake Victoria. This vast lake is the main source of the Nile, the longest river in the world, and spans the shores of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. On arrival, unwind with a lakeside dinner while you ponder the magnitude of the world’s largest tropical lake.

Day 5 • Serengeti National Park
Enjoy a relaxed morning, taking in the magnificent views of Lake Victoria in the morning light. Travel to Serengeti National Park, renowned for its incredible wildlife and vast, open landscapes. After passing through the park gate, experience the greatest commute possible as we slowly make our way to our permanent tented camp via the 'scenic safari route.' Along the way, stop to take photos of the abundant wildlife and stunning views. Tonight, you'll have a true African safari experience – with your comfortable safari camp set right in the heart of the Serengeti. After dinner, gather around the campfire to share stories, then fall asleep to the sounds of the wild.

Day 6 • Serengeti National Park
Wake to another glorious day in the Serengeti National Park. Start the day with an early morning 4WD safari to spot the wildlife when they're at their most active. Then, return to camp for a relaxed brunch. This afternoon, head off again for another drive through the park. Return to camp for dinner and another night under the Serengeti's stars.

Day 7 • Karatu
Enjoy a final game drive through the Serengeti National Park this morning as you exit your camp inside the park and make your way to the park gate. From here, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation area, where you'll hop in the park's 4WD jeeps and descend to the crater floor. The jeeps have an open roof, and the animals here are less wary of humans and vehicles, which makes watching them up close easier. Take in the spectacular views from the crater's rim as you make your way to the bottom, where animals roam the lakes, rivers, woodlands and hills. Keep an eye out for wildebeest, lion, zebra, cheetah, buffalo, gazelle, endangered black rhino and the colourfully dressed Maasai people who often water their cattle at the lake here. This afternoon, leave the Ngorongoro Crater and drive to Karatu – a small town on its outskirts and your base for the next two nights.

Day 8 • Karatu
After breakfast, make your way towards Lake Eyasi, a vast seasonal soda lake, stopping at a scenic viewpoint to take in the magnificent views across its shimmering waters. The area surrounding Lake Eyasi has been home to the Hadzabe people for more than 10,000 years and is one of the few places in Africa where traditional tribal life continues with little modern influence. Today’s visit to the Hadzabe lands offers fascinating insight into this ancient culture and a chance to learn about their way of life. Meet community members and take part in daily activities such as hunting, gathering, and traditional dance, while learning about their unique ‘click’ language — believed to be one of the oldest still spoken today. Return to your lodge in Karatu later in the day to relax and unwind.

Day 9 • Arusha
Today is a free day to relax or choose from the various optional activities available from your base in Karatu. You might like to head to a local coffee plantation or take a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. Maybe opt for a hike through the Ngorongoro Reserve Forest to Elephant Caves accompanied by an expert local guide and armed ranger. This is the perfect way to stretch your legs after a few days of travel. You'll hike through the Ngorongoro rainforest as your local guide explains the ins and outs of the area and points out interesting animal tracks and footprints. Marvel at the wild landscape and spot the varied birdlife as you walk. In the afternoon, you’ll head to Arusha, where you spend your last night.

Day 10 • Arusha / Nairobi
Your adventure comes to an end after breakfast today. A departure transfer to either Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) can be booked at an additional expense. Alternatively, you can continue with your crew to finish in Nairobi where you'll be dropped at a centrally located hotel, however, no accommodation will be provided tonight. If you want to extend your stay in Arusha or Nairobi, just get in touch with your booking agent to organise additional accommodation.

Setting off from the volunteer house or homestay accommodation after an approximate one hour drive you will arrive at the Tarangire National Park. The Tarangire National Park has the highest density of elephants in North Tanzania and you can view these animals all year round in which the herds often can reach an impressive number of 300 animals.

The Tarangire River has water all year round and during the dry season, between July and October, many animals from the surrounding areas come to the river for drinking. If you visit the park during the dry season, you will witness an unforgettable natural wonder as you can observe wonderful creatures such as lions, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests and zebras as well as various types of antelopes and gazelles and with a little luck, you can also spot a python!

Around lunchtime, you will stop at a suitable picnic place before the afternoon is dedicated to more wildlife watching. Before sunset, you will be driven back to your accommodation.

Volunteers on the Maasai Immersion project: 

The Maasai Immersion project is located about 2 hours away from Arusha. Due to the remoteness of the project, volunteers who wish to go back to Arusha and take part on tours over the weekends, will need to arrange transportation with the local team directly at an extra cost of US$70 per vehicle, for up to 4 passengers. Please note that this doesn't apply to safaris, as the local team can pick up volunteers from the Maasai village on the way out to the wildlife parks and reserves.

Day 1:
Early morning, you will leave the volunteer house or homestay to start the approximately 2 hours drive to reach the Tarangire Park gate. You will enjoy a game drive in the park well-known for its huge number of elephants, before driving to Jambo campsite to overnight.

Day 2:
After breakfast, you will drive to Lake Manyara (approx. 1.5 hour) famous for its tree-climbing lions and flamingos. Return to overnight again at Jambo campsite.

Day 3:
On your final day, waking up early to drive to the Ngorongoro crater (approx 1 hour), and with the best chance of seeing the big five after an adventurous drive into the caldera for a morning of game drive you will drive back to Arusha to the volunteer accommodation.

Without knowing what the right price is to pay in Tanzania for an airport transfer, you can easily get overcharged, or spend a long time trying to find a decent price. IVHQ’s local team knows the most reliable airport transfer companies and can get them booked for you at an affordable local rate. 

You’ll be picked up from your volunteer accommodation in Tanzania at your chosen time, and driven directly to the airport with plenty of time for your flight. Please keep in mind that this service is only offered for those staying at the volunteer accommodation. 

Important notes:

- Families and friends of up to 4 people (including children) travelling together as a group and catching the same flight will need to budget for only one airport drop-off. Please keep in mind that there's limited room for luggage. 

- If you are a solo traveller, please keep in mind that if you book your airport drop-off beforehand via your profile and end up sharing the ride with other volunteers travelling to the airport at the same time, we are unable to offer refunds.
