Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most famous natural features, is a must-see while you are in the country. The Arenal Volcano National Park being home to varied wildlife and impressive flora is a treat for nature lovers, as is the Arenal Botanical Gardens. The volcano is a stunning sight itself, surrounded by rainforest at its base, but the local area also boasts a wide range of activities such as white water rafting, waterfall rappelling, caving, canopy tours, horseback rides, and hiking. Nearby Lake Arenal also offers a variety of water sports including canoeing, fishing, and kite surfing. Make sure to leave time for a visit to the incredible hot springs in the area and La Fortuna Waterfall too!

En route, participants stop at Sarchi, a town known for its beautiful and intricate Costa Rican arts and crafts. At La Fortuna, participants enjoy a traditional lunch overlooking Arenal volcano, and relax at the mineral pools filled with naturally hot water from volcanic springs.

Day 1: Antigua Guatemala. Arrive at any time. After the welcome meeting choose to join your fellow group members for an optional evening out.

Today's activities:
  • Meet you CEO and group: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.

Day 2: Antigua Guatemala/Copán. Cross the border today between Guatemala and Honduras as the group travels to the town of Copán Ruinas. Arrive in the colonial highland town in the evening and soak up this gorgeous location set along a river in the coffee growing region.

Day 3: Copán. Enjoy a full free day to explore Copán on your own. Choose to visit the nearby ruins and see some lesser known Mayan sites along the way. You can also choose to visit the countryside where you'll find hidden jungle hot springs to soak in.

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Free time in the town of Copán. Opt to visit the Copán Ruins, explore the hills, or soak in hot springs.

Day 4: Copán/Suchitoto. The journey today, while long, will also be a good way to catch up on some rest. Drive from Honduras back into Guatemala briefly before crossing the border to El Salvador where the group will stay in the colonial town of Suchitoto. Choose to try pupusas tonight, a local Salvadorian specialty and a great treat after a long day of travel.

Day 5: Suchitoto/La Libertad Region. Spend the morning at leisure in Suchitoto and then it's off to the coast and the La Libertad region. Catch a stunning sunset in a small surf town and opt to grab a cold drink after a day's journey complete.

  • Free Time: Enjoy a free morning to check out this colonial city.
  • Private Vehicle: Suchitoto - Playa El Tunco, 3 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

Day 6: La Libertad Region. This full free day is perfect for optional beach activities in the area. Opt to book a surf lesson, try fresh ceviche at the fish market, visit the Tamanique waterfalls, or relax on the beach.

  • Free Time: Enjoy a free day to do as much or as little as you'd like in this beach town.

Day 7: La Libertad Region/León. Leave El Salvador and transfer by land and sea to Nicaragua. The group will arrive to colonial León for a short orientation walk in the evening.

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: Potosí - León, 3 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Private Vehicle: Playa El Tunco - La Unión, 4 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Boat: La Unión - Potosi, 3 hours. Climb aboard and get your float on.
  • Border Crossing (El Salvador - Nicaragua): La Unión - Potosi. Ready for a little more ink in your passport? Grab your bags and get ready to check another country off your bucket list.
  • Orientation Walk: Take a brief walk of the historic center of León. Pass through the central park, the local market, and various historical churches.

Day 8: León/Granada. Continue on towards Granada today, where you'll see the city's colourful colonial buildings during an orientation walk. Surrounded by active volcanoes and lakes, this place is perfect for hiking and outdoor activities. Get to know the town and opt to go out with the group.

Accommodation: Hotel La Estacion Granada (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: León - Granada, 2 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Orientation Walk - Granada: Enjoy a brief walk with your CEO. He/she will give you some tips on finding things like supermarkets, main squares, and ATMs. For more specific or in-depth information, an official guided tour is recommended.

Day 9: Granada. Get out and explore the charms of Granada during your full free day. Visit the local markets and museums. Choose to try kayaking in Lake Nicaragua or go for a swim in Laguna de Apoyo. You could also go for a walk in the forest at the top of Mombacho Volcano.

Accommodation: Hotel La Estacion Granada (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Free time to explore beautiful Granada's markets, buildings and museums, view Masaya Volcano's smoldering crater, kayak in Lake Nicaragua or swim in Laguna de Apoyo.

Day 10: Granada/Isla de Ometepe. Cross Lake Nicaragua by ferry to arrive at Ometepe Island, formed from two volcanoes in the middle of the lake. Here, take part in a 2-night community homestay among different local families. This experience will give you a chance to experience how rural Nicaraguans live.

Meals included: Dinner

  • Local Bus: Granada - Rivas, 1 hour and 15 minutes. Climb aboard, grab a seat, and enjoy the ride.

  • Ferry: San Jorge - Moyogalpa, 1 hour. Get to the next spot on your route aboard a convenient and efficient ferry boat.
  • Private Vehicle: Moyogalpa - Isla de Ometepe. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Puesta del Sol Community Guesthouse Stay: Stay with a local family by the lake in the small rural village of La Paloma, near Moyogalpa, on Ometepe Island. Your presence is supporting this community-owned and operated business. The Planeterra Foundation helped launch the project and trained up the community to host travellers. While you're here, practice Spanish, enjoy authentically-cooked fresh food and hike the nearby trails.

Day 11: Isla de Ometepe. Explore Ometepe on your own. Choose to climb Volcano Concepción or Volcano Maderas, spend time with the local host families, or view petroglyphs left by the island's original inhabitants. You can also choose to walk or kayak in Charco Verde reserve, travel the island by bicycle, or lounge out on the beach.

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Free time in Ometepe. Spend time with the local host families and see more of the island. Opt to climb either of the two volcanoes on the island, view petroglyphs, walk or kayak in Charco Verde reserve, swim in clear spring water at Ojo de Agua, lay on the beach or explore the island on bicycle.
  • Puesta del Sol Community Guesthouse Stay: Stay with a local family by the lake in the small rural village of La Paloma, near Moyogalpa, on Ometepe Island. Day 12: Isla de Ometepe/Monteverde. Travel by ferry back to the mainland and drive across the border into Costa Rica. The final destination today is the cloud forest environment of Monteverde. Sitting 1,400 meters above sea level, Monteverde is literally in the clouds and home to unique and diverse flora and fauna.

  • Private Vehicle: Mayogalpa - Isla de Ometepe. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Ferry: Mayogalpa - San Jorge, 1 hour and 30 minutes. Get to the next spot on your route aboard a convenient and efficient ferry boat.
  • Local Bus: San Jorge - Rivas, 15 minutes. Climb aboard, grab a seat, and enjoy the ride.
  • Local Bus: Rivas - Peñas Blancas, 1 hour. Climb aboard, grab a seat, and enjoy the ride.
  • Border Crossing (Nicaragua - Costa Rica): Peñas Blancas to Peñas Blancas. Be prepared to walk with bags approximately 10 minutes between the Nicaragua and Costa Rica border stations.
  • Private Vehicle: Peñas Blancas - Monteverde, 4 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

Day 13: Monteverde. The day is free for any optional activities in the area. Options include a visit to a cloud forest reserve, ziplining through the jungle canopy, or visiting a coffee plantation. There's also horseback riding in the mountains or hiking along local trails.

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: The day is free to choose from many optional activities. Fly hundreds of meters above the trees on a zip-lining tour, hike through one of the cloud forest reserves, ride a horse in the mountains, visit a coffee/sugar cane farm, tour the cheese factory or check out the orchid garden, serpentarium, or frog pond in town.

Day 14: Monteverde/La Fortuna. Leave the cloud forest behind and travel down towards sea level and across Costa Rica's largest lake to the town of La Fortuna at the base of the Arenal Volcano. Once here, choose your activities; canyoning, white water rafting, hiking, caving, horseback riding, paddle boarding, kayaking, and visiting a wildlife refuge are just some of the fun options you could try.

Today's activities:
  • Shared Van: Monteverde - Laguna de Arenal, 3 hours and 30 minutes. Climb aboard and make friends with your seatmate en route to the next stop.
  • Boat: Laguna de Arenal - Laguna de Arenal, 45 minutes. Climb aboard and get your float on.
  • Shared Van: Laguna de Arenal - La Fortuna, 30 minutes. Climb aboard and make friends with your seatmate en route to the next stop.
  • Free Time: Free time to enjoy the La Fortuna and Arenal area.

Day 15: La Fortuna. Partake in any of the activities you didn't get to try yesterday. From canyoning to rafting, the possibilities feel endless.

Day 16: La Fortuna/San José. Travel through the mountains to San José and spend a free night out in the capital. From beautiful parks to museums and theatres there's plenty to see.

This incredible 6-day adventure is designed to perfectly complement your volunteer experience leaving all the stress of trip planning to us! To give you the best experience, we keep our itinerary flexible so we can adapt to weather and local events on the ground. 

Your journey kicks off on Sunday and wraps up the following Saturday morning. Plus, to help you settle in, your accommodation is included starting the Saturday before the adventure begins.


This Beach & Jungle Mini Adventure includes:

Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park is considered one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica! You visit pristine beaches and coral reefs amid the natural wonders of the tropical rainforest. You make a short hike into the jungle and from there can choose to relax and enjoy the beach, sunbathe, or trek through the park’s trails. In the park, there are multiple species of monkeys, iguanas, birds, and sloths. Bilingual guide, entrance fees, and snacks included.

Rainmaker Tour
Rainmaker Park is a private biological reserve originally created for scientific research. The Park is located approximately 30 minutes from Manuel Antonio. The tour begins with a short hike through the rainforest, looking for birds, insects and amphibians, as you trek over hanging bridges and natural trails up to the top of Rainmaker Mountain–at the summit there is an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean! The hike continues on trails and through the Canopy Walk bridge system spanning 250 meters (1/4 mile). The suspended bridge design permits minimal forest impact, while giving hikers the opportunity to explore the rainforest from a bird’s eye view. The tour also includes a visit to several waterfalls and a refreshing dip in a natural pool. The tour ends with a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch. Bilingual guide, entrance fees, and lunch included.

Canopy-Zipline
A beautiful zipline adventure in Costa Rica! The tour begins with a short 20-minute drive to Santuario Park, which is an extensive primary rainforest. The zip lines are long and fast and Santuario Park Canopy has the third longest cable in the world–approximately 1.6 km (1 mile) long. The tour has over 3.6 km (2.2 miles) of total zip line across 10 lines and 14 tree platforms. Other activities include nature walks, hanging bridges, and a rappelling activity. Bilingual guide and lunch included.

White Water Rafting
The trip is filled with the incredible landscapes and natural waterfalls of the rainforest. Between class II to IV rapids. There is a safety orientation so everyone understands the basics of rafting-no previous experience necessary! All rafting equipment, expert river guide, and snacks are included. The activity includes snacks and a typical Costa Rican meal after the tour. To ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone, this adventure is best suited for participants aged 7 and older, with a maximum weight limit of 100kg (220 lbs).

Nauyaca Waterfall Hike
Nauyaca Waterfall is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic natural attractions! The tour begins with a 1-hour drive, followed by a 4.8 km (3 mile) hike back to Nauyaca. At Nauyaca Falls, most hikers love to take a refreshing dip in the pool at the bottom of the waterfall. Time and weather permitting, the hike may also include a stop at Portalón Waterfall. On the way back to Manuel Antonio, you will enjoy a delicious, traditional Costa Rica lunch. This is a scenery-rich tour and participants always take amazing photos! Trimaran Sails Tour
This is an amazing ocean tour sailing along Manuel Antonio’s gorgeous Pacific coast. Enjoy free-flowing drinks and snacks at the onboard bar during the cruise to Biesanz Beach. Along the way, spot sea turtles, dolphins, and migrating whales (seasonal). At the beach, you can swim, snorkel and explore. Bilingual guide, lifevest, snorkel gear, drinks, and lunch included.

Day 1 - Welcome to Costa Rica!
Bienvenidos! Welcome to Costa Rica. Upon arriving in San José, our team will welcome you at the airport. As you transfer to your first accommodation in the trendy suburb of Escazu, feel the excitement for the next 12 days begin to build. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and stunning views of the Central Valley, Escazú sets the perfect backdrop for the start of your adventure.
On your first evening, enjoy a welcome dinner at a charming local restaurant, indulging in traditional Costa Rican cuisine such as gallo pinto and patacones. Over dinner, get to know your fellow travellers, who you’ll explore the beauty of Costa Rica with.
Note: For guests who wish to explore San José, please plan to do so before or after the tour, as it is not included in the itinerary.

Day 2 - Volcanic Vistas & Food Fiestas
Today you will leave the province of San José behind and venture to the incredible Poás Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes. Trek up to its crater rim, where if you’re lucky you will see the gas emitting from the centre. For those seeking more adventure, there is an additional section leading to the lagoon rim, where the vibrant blue waters contrast with the surrounding rugged landscape. On your way back, you will drive past the entrance to the La Paz Waterfalls and get a glimpse of the 4th and 5th falls.
Later, check in to your accommodation – a sustainable stay at a tropical rainforest lodge. End the day with a hands-on cooking class at a family farm, where you’ll learn traditional Costa Rican recipes from a wonderful local family. In the evening, you may choose to stay up late to try and spot the famous red-eyed tree frogs with your new travel mates.

Day 3 - Sloth Encounters & Chocolate Delights
Today you will meet the world’s most laid-back creatures, the Sloth, at the Proyecto Asis Wildlife Rescue Centre. Proyecto Asis is dedicated to wildlife protection and environmental conservation. During the tour, you will learn all about these curious species and witness them in their natural habitat. After experiencing the sloths in the treetops, head to a local coffee and chocolate farm. This is a small, family-run coffee and cacao plantation where we will meet with the family and hear their story.
After a late lunch in the quaint town of La Fortuna, wrap up the afternoon choosing from a variety of activities, including a ziplining adventure through the forest canopy, a visit to the La Fortuna Waterfall, a swim at El Salto swimming hole and rope swing, or a relaxing afternoon soaking in the natural hot springs, surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of this unique destination.

Day 4 - La Fortuna: Free Day Thrills
With so many things to do, the first half of the day is yours to spend as you wish! Hike through national parks with views of wildlife, lava rocks, or lakes and volcanoes. Keep your eyes peeled for toucans, coatis, sloths, and other smaller animals, soar through the canopy on a zipline tour, or cool off under a nearby waterfall. There are several national parks to explore in the vicinity, so we offer a drop-off service to assist guests in choosing their preferred activity. As the afternoon fades, we’ll drive to a local beauty spot to unwind in the rugged natural thermal springs and recharge for tomorrow’s adventures.

Day 5 - Journey to the Cloud Forest
Today is a full-on journey by road and boat into the mystical Cloud Forest of Monteverde. Just getting there is an adventure itself. On arrival, you will check in to a rainforest conservation lodge – the only one located in the national park. Get ready to learn about the biodiversity in the Cloud Forest. As night falls, gear up for a walk in the dark through this enchanted world with one of the rangers. Spot tarantulas, snakes, sloths, birds, toucanets, and a whole host of other wildlife. Finish up your evening with a cup of local hot chocolate. Delish!

Day 6 - Monteverde: Volunteering & Exploring the Cloud Forest
It’s time to grab those work gloves and help the rangers maintain the lush trails of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Earn double eco-points by learning about sustainability efforts in this stunning world reserve with some ecology talks before and after your trail management volunteering.
In the afternoon, you can choose between spotting diverse wildlife, like elusive quetzals and playful monkeys, or unwinding at the nearby Hummingbird Café, just a 5-minute walk from the lodge. For those who haven’t yet had their fill of adrenaline activities, now is a good time – Monteverde offers hanging bridge walks, ziplines, rope swings, and even bungee jumps.

Day 7 - Pacific Beach Vibes
Descend the winding mountain roads down to the pacific ocean for the ultimate chill. Once you arrive, take in the stunning coastal views and feel the warm sand between your toes. En route, we will stop off in the mesmerising bay of Paquera to join a guided ocean kayaking activity, which includes helping clean up ocean plastic, making a positive impact on the environment. We will then continue our drive until we reach the lively coastal town of Santa Teresa. After a rewarding day, relax at your accommodation, just a 5-minute walk from the beach, with a pool to unwind by, and watch the sunset over the horizon.
*Please note that a basic paddling ability is required for the kayaking activity. For those who are not comfortable kayaking, there may be an alternative option available.

Day 8 - Santa Teresa: Beach Day
With no plans for most of the day, you’re free to go full beach mode. Learn to surf those legendary breaks with a lesson, or simply laze on the beach and work on your tan. For those looking for a peaceful end to the day, there’s an optional sunset yoga session near the beach.
If you’re up for more adventure, tonight you have the option to join an incredible bioluminescent night kayaking tour or a full moon tour, depending on the time of the month. Please note that this tour involves a 1.5-hour drive in each direction, but it is a truly unique experience.

Day 9 - Make your way to Manuel Antonio
This morning, you will hop on a gulf-crossing ferry heading to the legendary Manuel Antonio National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for marine life along the way! We have a couple of stops before arriving at your eco-village accommodation.
While you’re relaxing by the pool, look out for monkeys in the trees. There is a local bus service directly outside the hotel that can take you to the beach, for food, or to catch the sunset. For those interested in a bit of adventure, small trails from the back of the hotel offer opportunities to spot animals, including birds and frogs.

Day 10 - Manuel Antonio: Monkeys & Mangroves
Spend another day in the Manuel Antonio area, soaking in its natural beauty. As one of Costa Rica’s most famous nature reserves, you’ll have access to Manuel Antonio National Park to explore as you wish. Dive into jungle swimming and explore the evergreen forests in search of chilled-out sloths and mischievous monkeys. Enjoy the beaches, walk around the trails, and spot exotic birds and monkeys in the park. The afternoon is free for you to relax or further explore, with easy bus access to bring you back to your jungle hotel when you’re ready.

Day 11 - Manuel Antonio: Free Day in Nature's Paradise
Wake up in Manuel Antonio’s lush paradise. With a free morning ahead, choose your own adventure. Explore winding rainforest trails, glide through serene mangrove waterways, unwind on pristine beaches, or join an optional yoga session. As the afternoon unfolds, you will journey back through scenic mountain roads to vibrant Escazú. Cap off your Costa Rican tour with a farewell dinner, raising a glass to newfound friendships and unforgettable experiences.

Day 12 - Hasta Luego Costa Rica!
After one last hearty breakfast, it’s time to say hasta luego to your incredible Costa Rica guides and crew. 

*Note: For guests who wish to explore San José, please plan to do so before or after the tour, as it is not included in the itinerary and we will be staying around 30 minutes drive away.

This incredible 6-day adventure is designed to perfectly complement your volunteer experience leaving all the stress of trip planning to us! To give you the best experience, we keep our itinerary flexible so we can adapt to weather and local events on the ground. 

Your journey kicks off on Sunday and wraps up the following Saturday morning. Plus, to help you settle in, your accommodation is fully included starting the Saturday before the adventure begins.

The itinerary includes: 

Arenal Volcano & Hot Springs
Arenal is a majestic active volcano in the northern part of Costa Rica. En route, you stop at Sarchi, a town known for its beautiful and intricate Costa Rican arts and crafts, and souvenirs. At La Fortuna you enjoy a typical lunch overlooking Arenal volcano, before relaxing at the Hot Springs Resort & Spa. Wade and swim in mineral pools filled with naturally hot water from volcanic springs. After a delicious buffet dinner, you head back back to San José.

Britt Coffee Tour
Learn how Café Britt changed the course of history and coffee beans in Costa Rica! This tour shares the story behind Costa Rica’s most famous gourmet coffee. The guided tour lets you trace the process of coffee production from bean to cup; and discover how Costa Rica’s unique micro climates and fertile soils create the ideal conditions for growing the world’s best coffee beans. You also learn from the experts how to prepare coffee using traditional methods. Of course the tour culminates in a coffee tasting! Bilingual guide and entrance fees included.

Animal Sanctuary & La Paz Waterfall Garden
The tour begins with a drive along the Panamerican Highway and passes by the Agriculture Monument, the Monument to Juan Santamaria, and the famous Mango Park. La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a nature park and wildlife sanctuary where participants hike along natural and manmade trails in the rainforest, trekking from waterfall to waterfall. In the wildlife sanctuary, participants visit the largest butterfly observatory in Costa Rica, an impressive hummingbird gallery, serpentarium, and see monkeys, birds, and big cats. The tour ends with a delicious buffet lunch. Bilingual guide, entrance fees, and lunch included.

Whitewater Rafting
This tour combines nature, wilderness, and excitement. Rio Pacuare runs through a true river gorge and is flanked by steep rock and filled with wildlife and cascading waterfalls along the route. The whitewater includes Class III, IV and V rapids and it is an exciting descent! Along the way, there is a buffet lunch served on the river bank. Before starting the adventure, there is a safety orientation so everyone understands the basics of rafting–no previous experience necessary! During the route, professional photographers take pictures and shoot video, which can be purchased at the end of the trip. All equipment is provided, including helmet, paddle, and lifevest. Expert bilingual river guide and lunch included. To ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone, this adventure is best suited for participants aged 7 and older, with a maximum weight limit of 100kg (220 lbs).

Tortuga Island
Tortuga Island is located 22.2 km (12 miles) off Puntarenas on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The island is a 48.5-hectare (120-acre) protected nature reserve It has an area of 120 acres, as it remains as a protected forest; and is recognized as an “Ecological Blue Flag site” due to it’s pollution-free, crystal clear waters that are free of pollution. On the trip out to the island, participants may spot dolphins, sea turtles, and aquatic birds. On the island, participants bask on the white sand beaches, take a swim in the ocean, hike the nature trails, and enjoy lunch. Breakfast, and lunch included.

Cultural Night
Enjoy a traditional dinner in a restaurant perched high above the mountains overlooking San José. From this unique vantage point, you enjoy panoramic views of the Central Valley and explore ‘Tico’ folklore through traditional dances and marimba music.

Over the course of a week, you'll master the art of scuba diving under the expert guidance of PADI-certified instructors, all while soaking in the stunning coastal beauty of this tropical paradise. Your all-inclusive package not only covers your training but also includes convenient pick-up in San Jose, round-trip transportation to Manuel Antonio, and a six-night stay in a private room with a welcoming host family who will ensure your mornings start with a delicious breakfast and your days end with a satisfying dinner.

Participants can choose to complete their eLearning course in advance or in-country; this hsould take around 5-10 hours to complete. When doing the practical training, you can expect to dive in a pool on your first day to get you comfortable with your gear and practice basic skills. After mastering basci skilss, you can expect to do open 4 open-water dives, typically.

Important note:
The PADI Scuba Certification is offered as an extension to your program duration and it’s an exciting experience that runs for 7 days. This can be completed the week prior to your program beginning or the week after your program finishes. This means that if you want to volunteer for 2 weeks and you add the PADI Scuba Certification week to your itinerary, you’ll be hosted by the local team for a total of 3 weeks.

Itinerary:


Day 1: Antigua Guatemala. Arrive at any time. After the welcome meeting choose to join your fellow group members for an optional evening out. 

Accommodation: La Quinta Santa Lucia (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Meet you CEO and group: Your opportunity to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, and learn more about your tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterwards. Don't forget to see the notice in the lobby (or ask reception) for the official time and place to meet up with the group.

Day 2: Antigua Guatemala/Copán. Cross the border today between Guatemala and Honduras as the group travels to the town of Copán Ruinas. Arrive in the colonial highland town in the evening and soak up this gorgeous location set along a river in the coffee growing region. 

Accommodation: Hotel Brisas de Copan (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: Antigua Guatemala - Copán, 8 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Border Crossing (Guatemala-Honduras): El Florido to El Florido. Ready for a little more ink in your passport? Grab your bags and get ready to check another country off your bucket list.

Day 3: Copán. Enjoy a full free day to explore Copán on your own. Choose to visit the nearby ruins and see some lesser known Mayan sites along the way. You can also choose to visit the countryside where you'll find hidden jungle hot springs to soak in.

Accommodation: Hotel Brisas de Copan (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Free time in the town of Copán. Opt to visit the Copán Ruins, explore the hills, or soak in hot springs.

Day 4: Copán/Suchitoto. The journey today, while long, will also be a good way to catch up on some rest. Drive from Honduras back into Guatemala briefly before crossing the border to El Salvador where the group will stay in the colonial town of Suchitoto. Choose to try pupusas tonight, a local Salvadorian specialty and a great treat after a long day of travel.

Accommodation: Posada Alta Vista (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: Copán - Suchitoto, 8 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

Prepare for the long travel day with snacks.


Day 5: Suchitoto/La Libertad Region. Spend the morning at leisure in Suchitoto and then it's off to the coast and the La Libertad region. Catch a stunning sunset in a small surf town and opt to grab a cold drink after a day's journey complete.

Accommodation: Atami Escape Resort (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Enjoy a free morning to check out this colonial city.
  • Private Vehicle: Suchitoto - Playa El Tunco, 3 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

Day 6: La Libertad Region. This full free day is perfect for optional beach activities in the area. Opt to book a surf lesson, try fresh ceviche at the fish market, visit the Tamanique waterfalls, or relax on the beach.

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: Enjoy a free day to do as much or as little as you'd like in this beach town.

Day 7: La Libertad Region/León. Leave El Salvador and transfer by land and sea to Nicaragua. The group will arrive to colonial León for a short orientation walk in the evening.

Accommodation: Hotel Hellenika (or similar) - Hotel

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: Potosí - León, 3 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Private Vehicle: Playa El Tunco - La Unión, 4 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Boat: La Unión - Potosi, 3 hours. Climb aboard and get your float on.
  • Border Crossing (El Salvador - Nicaragua): La Unión - Potosi. Ready for a little more ink in your passport? Grab your bags and get ready to check another country off your bucket list.
  • Orientation Walk: Take a brief walk of the historic center of León. Pass through the central park, the local market, and various historical churches.

Day 8: León/Granada. Continue on towards Granada today, where you'll see the city's colourful colonial buildings during an orientation walk. Surrounded by active volcanoes and lakes, this place is perfect for hiking and outdoor activities. Get to know the town and opt to go out with the group.

Today's activities:
  • Private Vehicle: León - Granada, 2 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.
  • Orientation Walk - Granada: Enjoy a brief walk with your CEO. He/she will give you some tips on finding things like supermarkets, main squares, and ATMs. For more specific or in-depth information, an official guided tour is recommended.

Day 9: Granada. Get out and explore the charms of Granada during your full free day. Visit the local markets and museums. Choose to try kayaking in Lake Nicaragua or go for a swim in Laguna de Apoyo. You could also go for a walk in the forest at the top of Mombacho Volcano.

  • Free Time: Free time to explore beautiful Granada's markets, buildings and museums, view Masaya Volcano's smoldering crater, kayak in Lake Nicaragua or swim in Laguna de Apoyo.

Day 10: Granada/Isla de Ometepe. Cross Lake Nicaragua by ferry to arrive at Ometepe Island, formed from two volcanoes in the middle of the lake. Here, take part in a 2-night community homestay among different local families. This experience will give you a chance to experience how rural Nicaraguans live.

  • Puesta del Sol Community Guesthouse Stay: Stay with a local family by the lake in the small rural village of La Paloma, near Moyogalpa, on Ometepe Island. While you're here, practice Spanish, enjoy authentically-cooked fresh food and hike the nearby trails.

Day 11: Isla de Ometepe. Explore Ometepe on your own. Choose to climb Volcano Concepción or Volcano Maderas, spend time with the local host families, or view petroglyphs left by the island's original inhabitants. You can also choose to walk or kayak in Charco Verde reserve, travel the island by bicycle, or lounge out on the beach.

  • Free Time: Free time in Ometepe. Spend time with the local host families and see more of the island. Opt to climb either of the two volcanoes on the island, view petroglyphs, walk or kayak in Charco Verde reserve, swim in clear spring water at Ojo de Agua, lay on the beach or explore the island on bicycle.
  • Puesta del Sol Community Guesthouse Stay: Stay with a local family by the lake in the small rural village of La Paloma, near Moyogalpa, on Ometepe Island. Day 12: Isla de Ometepe/Monteverde. Travel by ferry back to the mainland and drive across the border into Costa Rica. The final destination today is the cloud forest environment of Monteverde. Sitting 1,400 meters above sea level, Monteverde is literally in the clouds and home to unique and diverse flora and fauna.

  • Local Bus: San Jorge - Rivas, 15 minutes. Climb aboard, grab a seat, and enjoy the ride.
  • Local Bus: Rivas - Peñas Blancas, 1 hour. Climb aboard, grab a seat, and enjoy the ride.
  • Border Crossing (Nicaragua - Costa Rica): Peñas Blancas to Peñas Blancas. Be prepared to walk with bags approximately 10 minutes between the Nicaragua and Costa Rica border stations.
  • Private Vehicle: Peñas Blancas - Monteverde, 4 hours. Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle.

Day 13: Monteverde. The day is free for any optional activities in the area. Options include a visit to a cloud forest reserve, ziplining through the jungle canopy, or visiting a coffee plantation. There's also horseback riding in the mountains or hiking along local trails.

Today's activities:
  • Free Time: The day is free to choose from many optional activities. Fly hundreds of meters above the trees on a zip-lining tour, hike through one of the cloud forest reserves, ride a horse in the mountains, visit a coffee/sugar cane farm, tour the cheese factory or check out the orchid garden, serpentarium, or frog pond in town.

Day 14: Monteverde/La Fortuna. Leave the cloud forest behind and travel down towards sea level and across Costa Rica's largest lake to the town of La Fortuna at the base of the Arenal Volcano. Once here, choose your activities; canyoning, white water rafting, hiking, caving, horseback riding, paddle boarding, kayaking, and visiting a wildlife refuge are just some of the fun options you could try.

Accommodation: Arenal Backpackers Resort (or similar) - Hostel

Today's activities:
  • Shared Van: Monteverde - Laguna de Arenal, 3 hours and 30 minutes. Climb aboard and make friends with your seatmate en route to the next stop.
  • Boat: Laguna de Arenal - Laguna de Arenal, 45 minutes. Climb aboard and get your float on.
  • Shared Van: Laguna de Arenal - La Fortuna, 30 minutes. Climb aboard and make friends with your seatmate en route to the next stop.
  • Free Time: Free time to enjoy the La Fortuna and Arenal area.

Day 15: La Fortuna. Partake in any of the activities you didn't get to try yesterday. From canyoning to rafting, the possibilities feel endless.

Day 16: La Fortuna/San José. Travel through the mountains to San José and spend a free night out in the capital. From beautiful parks to museums and theatres there's plenty to see.

Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park is considered one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica! You visit pristine beaches and coral reefs amid the natural wonders of the tropical rainforest. You make a short hike into the jungle and from there can choose to relax and enjoy the beach, sunbathe, or trek through the park’s trails. In the park, there are multiple species of monkeys, iguanas, birds, and sloths. Bilingual guide, entrance fees, and snacks included.

Rainmaker Tour
Rainmaker Park is a private biological reserve originally created for scientific research. The Park is located approximately 30 minutes from Manuel Antonio. The tour begins with a short hike through the rainforest, looking for birds, insects and amphibians, as you trek over hanging bridges and natural trails up to the top of Rainmaker Mountain–at the summit there is an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean! The hike continues on trails and through the Canopy Walk bridge system spanning 250 meters (1/4 mile). The suspended bridge design permits minimal forest impact, while giving hikers the opportunity to explore the rainforest from a bird’s eye view. The tour also includes a visit to several waterfalls and a refreshing dip in a natural pool. The tour ends with a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch. Bilingual guide, entrance fees, and lunch included.

Canopy-Zipline
A beautiful zipline adventure in Costa Rica! The tour begins with a short 20-minute drive to Santuario Park, which is an extensive primary rainforest. The zip lines are long and fast and Santuario Park Canopy has the third longest cable in the world–approximately 1.6 km (1 mile) long. The tour has over 3.6 km (2.2 miles) of total zip line across 10 lines and 14 tree platforms. Other activities include nature walks, hanging bridges, and a rappelling activity. Bilingual guide and lunch included.

White Water Rafting
The trip is filled with the incredible landscapes and natural waterfalls of the rainforest. Between class II to IV rapids. There is a safety orientation so everyone understands the basics of rafting-no previous experience necessary! All rafting equipment, expert river guide, and snacks are included. The activity includes snacks and a typical Costa Rican meal after the tour. To ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone, this adventure is best suited for participants aged 7 and older, with a maximum weight limit of 100kg (220 lbs).

Nauyaca Waterfall Hike
Nauyaca Waterfall is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic natural attractions! The tour begins with a 1-hour drive, followed by a 4.8 km (3 mile) hike back to Nauyaca. At Nauyaca Falls, most hikers love to take a refreshing dip in the pool at the bottom of the waterfall. Time and weather permitting, the hike may also include a stop at Portalón Waterfall. On the way back to Manuel Antonio, you will enjoy a delicious, traditional Costa Rica lunch. This is a scenery-rich tour and participants always take amazing photos! Trimaran Sails Tour
This is an amazing ocean tour sailing along Manuel Antonio’s gorgeous Pacific coast. Enjoy free-flowing drinks and snacks at the onboard bar during the cruise to Biesanz Beach. Along the way, spot sea turtles, dolphins, and migrating whales (seasonal). At the beach, you can swim, snorkel and explore. Bilingual guide, lifevest, snorkel gear, drinks, and lunch included.

Day 1 - Welcome to Costa Rica!
Bienvenidos! Welcome to Costa Rica. Upon arriving in San José, our team will welcome you at the airport. As you transfer to your first accommodation in the trendy suburb of Escazu, feel the excitement for the next 12 days begin to build. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and stunning views of the Central Valley, Escazú sets the perfect backdrop for the start of your adventure.
On your first evening, enjoy a welcome dinner at a charming local restaurant, indulging in traditional Costa Rican cuisine such as gallo pinto and patacones. Over dinner, get to know your fellow travellers, who you’ll explore the beauty of Costa Rica with.
Note: For guests who wish to explore San José, please plan to do so before or after the tour, as it is not included in the itinerary.

Day 2 - Volcanic Vistas & Food Fiestas
Today you will leave the province of San José behind and venture to the incredible Poás Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes. Trek up to its crater rim, where if you’re lucky you will see the gas emitting from the centre. For those seeking more adventure, there is an additional section leading to the lagoon rim, where the vibrant blue waters contrast with the surrounding rugged landscape. On your way back, you will drive past the entrance to the La Paz Waterfalls and get a glimpse of the 4th and 5th falls.
Later, check in to your accommodation – a sustainable stay at a tropical rainforest lodge. End the day with a hands-on cooking class at a family farm, where you’ll learn traditional Costa Rican recipes from a wonderful local family. In the evening, you may choose to stay up late to try and spot the famous red-eyed tree frogs with your new travel mates.

Day 3 - Sloth Encounters & Chocolate Delights
Today you will meet the world’s most laid-back creatures, the Sloth, at the Proyecto Asis Wildlife Rescue Centre. Proyecto Asis is dedicated to wildlife protection and environmental conservation. During the tour, you will learn all about these curious species and witness them in their natural habitat. After experiencing the sloths in the treetops, head to a local coffee and chocolate farm. This is a small, family-run coffee and cacao plantation where we will meet with the family and hear their story.
After a late lunch in the quaint town of La Fortuna, wrap up the afternoon choosing from a variety of activities, including a ziplining adventure through the forest canopy, a visit to the La Fortuna Waterfall, a swim at El Salto swimming hole and rope swing, or a relaxing afternoon soaking in the natural hot springs, surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of this unique destination.

Day 4 - La Fortuna: Free Day Thrills
With so many things to do, the first half of the day is yours to spend as you wish! Hike through national parks with views of wildlife, lava rocks, or lakes and volcanoes. Keep your eyes peeled for toucans, coatis, sloths, and other smaller animals, soar through the canopy on a zipline tour, or cool off under a nearby waterfall. There are several national parks to explore in the vicinity, so we offer a drop-off service to assist guests in choosing their preferred activity. As the afternoon fades, we’ll drive to a local beauty spot to unwind in the rugged natural thermal springs and recharge for tomorrow’s adventures.

Day 5 - Journey to the Cloud Forest
Today is a full-on journey by road and boat into the mystical Cloud Forest of Monteverde. Just getting there is an adventure itself. On arrival, you will check in to a rainforest conservation lodge – the only one located in the national park. Get ready to learn about the biodiversity in the Cloud Forest. As night falls, gear up for a walk in the dark through this enchanted world with one of the rangers. Spot tarantulas, snakes, sloths, birds, toucanets, and a whole host of other wildlife. Finish up your evening with a cup of local hot chocolate. Delish!

Day 6 - Monteverde: Volunteering & Exploring the Cloud Forest
It’s time to grab those work gloves and help the rangers maintain the lush trails of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Earn double eco-points by learning about sustainability efforts in this stunning world reserve with some ecology talks before and after your trail management volunteering.
In the afternoon, you can choose between spotting diverse wildlife, like elusive quetzals and playful monkeys, or unwinding at the nearby Hummingbird Café, just a 5-minute walk from the lodge. For those who haven’t yet had their fill of adrenaline activities, now is a good time – Monteverde offers hanging bridge walks, ziplines, rope swings, and even bungee jumps.

Day 7 - Pacific Beach Vibes
Descend the winding mountain roads down to the pacific ocean for the ultimate chill. Once you arrive, take in the stunning coastal views and feel the warm sand between your toes. En route, we will stop off in the mesmerising bay of Paquera to join a guided ocean kayaking activity, which includes helping clean up ocean plastic, making a positive impact on the environment. We will then continue our drive until we reach the lively coastal town of Santa Teresa. After a rewarding day, relax at your accommodation, just a 5-minute walk from the beach, with a pool to unwind by, and watch the sunset over the horizon.
*Please note that a basic paddling ability is required for the kayaking activity. For those who are not comfortable kayaking, there may be an alternative option available.

Day 8 - Santa Teresa: Beach Day
With no plans for most of the day, you’re free to go full beach mode. Learn to surf those legendary breaks with a lesson, or simply laze on the beach and work on your tan. For those looking for a peaceful end to the day, there’s an optional sunset yoga session near the beach.
If you’re up for more adventure, tonight you have the option to join an incredible bioluminescent night kayaking tour or a full moon tour, depending on the time of the month. Please note that this tour involves a 1.5-hour drive in each direction, but it is a truly unique experience.

Day 9 - Make your way to Manuel Antonio
This morning, you will hop on a gulf-crossing ferry heading to the legendary Manuel Antonio National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for marine life along the way! We have a couple of stops before arriving at your eco-village accommodation.
While you’re relaxing by the pool, look out for monkeys in the trees. There is a local bus service directly outside the hotel that can take you to the beach, for food, or to catch the sunset. For those interested in a bit of adventure, small trails from the back of the hotel offer opportunities to spot animals, including birds and frogs.

Day 10 - Manuel Antonio: Monkeys & Mangroves
Spend another day in the Manuel Antonio area, soaking in its natural beauty. As one of Costa Rica’s most famous nature reserves, you’ll have access to Manuel Antonio National Park to explore as you wish. Dive into jungle swimming and explore the evergreen forests in search of chilled-out sloths and mischievous monkeys. Enjoy the beaches, walk around the trails, and spot exotic birds and monkeys in the park. The afternoon is free for you to relax or further explore, with easy bus access to bring you back to your jungle hotel when you’re ready.

Day 11 - Manuel Antonio: Free Day in Nature's Paradise
Wake up in Manuel Antonio’s lush paradise. With a free morning ahead, choose your own adventure. Explore winding rainforest trails, glide through serene mangrove waterways, unwind on pristine beaches, or join an optional yoga session. As the afternoon unfolds, you will journey back through scenic mountain roads to vibrant Escazú. Cap off your Costa Rican tour with a farewell dinner, raising a glass to newfound friendships and unforgettable experiences.

Day 12 - Hasta Luego Costa Rica!
After one last hearty breakfast, it’s time to say hasta luego to your incredible Costa Rica guides and crew.

Arenal Volcano & Hot Springs
Arenal is a majestic active volcano in the northern part of Costa Rica. En route, you stop at Sarchi, a town known for its beautiful and intricate Costa Rican arts and crafts, and souvenirs. At La Fortuna you enjoy a typical lunch overlooking Arenal volcano, before relaxing at the Hot Springs Resort & Spa. Wade and swim in mineral pools filled with naturally hot water from volcanic springs. After a delicious buffet dinner, you head back back to San José.

Britt Coffee Tour
Learn how Café Britt changed the course of history and coffee beans in Costa Rica! This tour shares the story behind Costa Rica’s most famous gourmet coffee. The guided tour lets you trace the process of coffee production from bean to cup; and discover how Costa Rica’s unique micro climates and fertile soils create the ideal conditions for growing the world’s best coffee beans. You also learn from the experts how to prepare coffee using traditional methods. Of course the tour culminates in a coffee tasting! Bilingual guide and entrance fees included.

Animal Sanctuary & La Paz Waterfall Garden
The tour begins with a drive along the Panamerican Highway and passes by the Agriculture Monument, the Monument to Juan Santamaria, and the famous Mango Park. La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a nature park and wildlife sanctuary where participants hike along natural and manmade trails in the rainforest, trekking from waterfall to waterfall. In the wildlife sanctuary, participants visit the largest butterfly observatory in Costa Rica, an impressive hummingbird gallery, serpentarium, and see monkeys, birds, and big cats. The tour ends with a delicious buffet lunch. Bilingual guide, entrance fees, and lunch included.

Whitewater Rafting
This tour combines nature, wilderness, and excitement. Rio Pacuare runs through a true river gorge and is flanked by steep rock and filled with wildlife and cascading waterfalls along the route. The whitewater includes Class III, IV and V rapids and it is an exciting descent! Along the way, there is a buffet lunch served on the river bank. Before starting the adventure, there is a safety orientation so everyone understands the basics of rafting–no previous experience necessary! During the route, professional photographers take pictures and shoot video, which can be purchased at the end of the trip. All equipment is provided, including helmet, paddle, and lifevest. Expert bilingual river guide and lunch included. To ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone, this adventure is best suited for participants aged 7 and older, with a maximum weight limit of 100kg (220 lbs).

Tortuga Island
Tortuga Island is located 22.2 km (12 miles) off Puntarenas on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The island is a 48.5-hectare (120-acre) protected nature reserve It has an area of 120 acres, as it remains as a protected forest; and is recognized as an “Ecological Blue Flag site” due to it’s pollution-free, crystal clear waters that are free of pollution. On the trip out to the island, participants may spot dolphins, sea turtles, and aquatic birds. On the island, participants bask on the white sand beaches, take a swim in the ocean, hike the nature trails, and enjoy lunch. Breakfast, and lunch included.

Cultural Night
Enjoy a traditional dinner in a restaurant perched high above the mountains overlooking San José. From this unique vantage point, you enjoy panoramic views of the Central Valley and explore ‘Tico’ folklore through traditional dances and marimba music.

Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most famous natural features, is a must-see while you are in the country. The Arenal Volcano National Park being home to varied wildlife and impressive flora is a treat for nature lovers, as is the Arenal Botanical Gardens. The volcano is a stunning sight itself, surrounded by rainforest at its base, but the local area also boasts a wide range of activities such as white water rafting, waterfall rappelling, caving, canopy tours, horseback rides, and hiking. Nearby Lake Arenal also offers a variety of water sports including canoeing, fishing, and kite surfing. Make sure to leave time for a visit to the incredible hot springs in the area and La Fortuna Waterfall too!

Over the course of a week, you'll master the art of scuba diving under the expert guidance of PADI-certified instructors, all while soaking in the stunning coastal beauty of this tropical paradise. Your all-inclusive package not only covers your training but also includes convenient pick-up in San Jose, round-trip transportation to Manuel Antonio, and a six-night stay in a private room with a welcoming host family who will ensure your mornings start with a delicious breakfast and your days end with a satisfying dinner.

Participants can choose to complete their eLearning course in advance or in-country; this hsould take around 5-10 hours to complete. When doing the practical training, you can expect to dive in a pool on your first day to get you comfortable with your gear and practice basic skills. After mastering basci skilss, you can expect to do open 4 open-water dives, typically.

Important note:
The PADI Scuba Certification is offered as an extension to your program duration and it’s an exciting experience that runs for 7 days. This can be completed the week prior to your program beginning or the week after your program finishes. This means that if you want to volunteer for 2 weeks and you add the PADI Scuba Certification week to your itinerary, you’ll be hosted by the local team for a total of 3 weeks.

Due to weather conditions, the dive site conditions may change daily and could be impacted if the weather is poor. In the unlikely event that your activity is impacted by factors outside of our control, such as weather, it's important to understand this will not result in a refund. However, the team will do their best to try and reschedule the activity when the weather improves.

If you'd like to stay in a private room during your whole program, please make sure you also include the Private Room Upgrade for your whole program as well.
