A groundbreaking conservation project dedicated to protecting wildlife and studying rehabilitated predators in one of Namibia’s most biodiverse reserves.
Timbila spans 30,500 hectares of untouched wilderness, offering a safe haven for a wide range of wildlife and plant species. Among its inhabitants are giraffes, white rhinos, elands, Hartmann’s mountain zebras, wildebeests, kudus, waterbucks, gemsboks, impalas, and Damara dik-diks. The reserve also serves as a refuge for conflict animals and ambassador species, including African wild dogs, rehabilitated lions, and free-roaming predators such as leopards, cheetahs, and brown hyenas. A key focus is the tracking of rehabilitated lions and elephants from the Erongo Region, relocated due to human-wildlife conflict. Camera traps have captured rare glimpses of nocturnal species like aardvarks and elusive African wild cats. Timbila plays a vital role in conservation and wildlife research.
Volunteer tasks:
- Setting up and maintaining camera traps
- Rhino tracking
- Removing fencing
- Conducting game counts
- Analyzing camera trap footage
- Monitoring GPS data from collared carnivores
- Studying carnivore behavior
- Researching local ecosystems
- Assisting in wildlife releases (if the opportunity arises)
- Learning tracking techniques

- Upkeeping fences
Transport:
Transfers to, from, and between the sites take place on Saturdays, with Wildlife Conservation at the Sanctuary as the starting point. You’ll stay at the Sanctuary for any extra nights when you're not at the research sites.
Depart at 7:00 AM from the Sanctuary on Saturday morning
Return to the Sanctuary between 6:00 - 7:00 PM the following Saturday
Travel time approximately 4 hours
Lodge Accommodation:
- Comfortable volunteer area with a breathtaking view over the reserve
- Lapa area with barbecue facilities
- Three meals served daily (dietary requirements catered for)
