Looking for the perfect way to jumpstart your volunteer journey in Lombok?
Immerse yourself in Lombok’s vibrant culture with our comprehensive Culture Week, designed to blend cultural exploration with everything you need to know about your upcoming program. From learning local customs to trying your hand at local cooking class and pottery class, this week offers unforgettable experiences that prepare you for your volunteer placement while introducing you to Lombok’s rich traditions and iconic activities! It will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing. Here's what you can look forward to:
Culture Week Schedule:
DAY 1 | Begin with an introduction to the IVHQ Lombok Program. Meet our friendly local staff, learn about Indonesian customs, rules, and safety guidelines, then enjoy a walking tour of Senggigi.
DAY 2 | Learn to make "Ketupat" like a local! This traditional dish will be a souvenir skill you can show off when you return home.
DAY 3 | Explore Lombok’s artistic side with a visit to a traditional pottery village. After lunch, you will dive into your first Bahasa language class to start communicating like a local.
DAY 4 | Continue practicing Bahasa in the morning, followed by an afternoon visit to the majestic Islamic Center in Lombok. End the day with a special welcome dinner where you’ll deepen your connections with fellow volunteers.
DAY 5 | Visit the enchanting Forever Young Temple, where you’ll have the chance to drink holy water and take a refreshing swim. In the afternoon, you'll receive a thorough introduction to your project to help you prepare for your placement starting on Monday.
This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on the needs of the project, local weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances
This Culture week ensures that by the time Monday arrives, you'll feel fully prepared to dive into your project, energized by the friendships and memories you've already made!
Important note:
The Culture Week is an optional yet immersive add-on that runs over the first five days of your program. It’s designed to give you a thorough orientation while introducing you to Bali’s culture. If you choose this, you will extended your duration—adding an extra week to your volunteer experience.
You will need to dress conservative when visiting the Islamic Center and temple, as a sign of respect for local customs and religious practices. Wearing clothing that covers your shoulders, near your elbow and knees is requested. By dressing respectfully, you’ll help maintain good relations with the community and show appreciation for Lombok's rich cultural traditions.
