This program is ideal for:

Perfect for compassionate, caring volunteers - no experience needed. Whether your interests are in education, sports, or construction, we’ll match you with a placement that fits.

Project details

Interested in being a Community Development volunteer in Sri Lanka? International Volunteer HQ’s Community Support project in Hikkaduwa allows volunteers to get involved in a wide variety of activities that benefit a low-income community. Volunteers can gain experience in one of the following: Teaching, Renovation, or Sports Development.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

The Community Support project consists of 3 different areas of volunteer work:

  • Teaching
  • Restoration and Renovation
  • Sports Education

Volunteers can choose to work within 1 of these fields and can note this preference on their application so the local team can assign their placement accordingly.

The Teaching project within the Community Support program encompasses several different placements, including:

Pre-School/Kindergarten

As a volunteer teaching assistant in local kindergartens, you’ll help children ages 2–6 learn English through songs, games, crafts, and storytelling. You’ll support teachers with lesson planning and classroom activities, helping create a lively and supportive environment for early learning.

Teaching Monks

In the afternoons, you’ll have the unique opportunity to teach young monks at nearby temples. Lessons focus on basic vocabulary, reading, and conversational English. Teaching monks requires flexibility, as lessons may be interrupted by temple rituals or events.

Community & Adult Teaching

This initiative supports school-aged children (7–15) and adults such as fishermen, tuk-tuk drivers, and small business owners. Classes are informal, often one-on-one or in small groups, focusing on practical language skills for school, tourism, and daily life.

Restoration and Renovation

For volunteers joining the Restoration and Renovation work, you can expect to contribute your time and energy to cleaning, painting, and light repairs: whether that is refreshing classrooms with a new coat of paint, cleaning temple grounds, or repairing community halls, your contributions directly support families and children.

Sports Coaching

Combining physical fitness, language development, and cultural exchange, this project uses education and sport to inspire teamwork, personal growth, and positive change in Hikkaduwa’s local communities.

Volunteers lead sessions in cricket, badminton, and other activities, and deliver interactive English lessons that boost confidence and communication skills. Your time will be filled with moments that matter during this unique blend of teaching and coaching, giving you the chance to empower learners of all ages.

You can expect to be placed in settings such as schools, community centers, and sports clubs. In the mornings, you’ll teach conversational English to children and adults, helping them develop vocabulary, reading, and practical communication skills. In the afternoons, you’ll switch gears to sports coaching - from cricket to badminton, while leading fun, engaging training sessions that build confidence, teamwork, and fitness. Your energy and creativity will not only improve skills but also open pathways for children to thrive in both school and daily life.

Cities account for approximately 70% of global carbon emissions and over 60% of resource use, with low-socioeconomic areas hit hardest by overburdened infrastructure and worsening pollution. Cities must evolve to provide better access to basic services for all, including housing, transportation and clean air.

Location

Hikkaduwa, a vibrant coastal town on Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast, is famous for its stunning beaches, surf spots, and coral reefs. Known for its laid-back atmosphere, Hikkaduwa draws both travelers and locals to enjoy its warm waters, tropical beauty, and lively nightlife.

The Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary, a shallow reef with colorful corals and exotic fish, makes it a popular spot for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The town also offers surf-friendly waves, attracting surfers from around the globe. Beyond the beach, Hikkaduwa is rich in cultural experiences, with nearby Buddhist temples like the Seenigama Muhudu Viharaya. Volunteers can explore local markets, taste fresh seafood, and experience the vibrant art scene.

With a unique blend of natural beauty, adventure, and culture, Hikkaduwa is an ideal destination for those looking to enjoy the best of Sri Lankan coastal life.

Arrival and orientation

The program orientation begins every Monday and volunteers need to arrive in Colombo on Sunday between 5:00 AM and 8:00PMto receive an airport pick up.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at the Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) on Sunday. Your airport pick-up on this day is included in your Program Fee. We recommend that volunteers under the age of 18 travel internationally with a notarized letter from their parents to support their documentation.

After you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation in Hikkaduwa. Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the Sunday night before your program orientation.

If you are traveling in Sri Lanka prior to your volunteer program, you can meet the local team at the airport in Colombo on the Sunday before your program begins at 02:00 PM, or make your own way directly to the volunteer house in Hikkaduwa.

Orientation is run by the local team in Hikkaduwa beginning on the Monday morning of your start date. There are two options for orientation:

One-day Orientation:

This provides you with all the key information you need, plus the chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing. It includes an introduction to Sri Lanka, an overview of Sri Lankan customs, rules, and expectations, safety guidelines in Sri Lanka, travel opportunities in Sri Lanka, an introduction to your volunteer project and placement, a Hikkaduwa tour, welcome yoga on the beach, and basic Sinhala language lessons.

5-day Culture Week in Kandy:

This is a fantastic way to start your volunteer experience in Sri Lanka and gives you the time to dive deeper into the culture and explore another unique location in Sri Lanka. It will include everything on the One-Day Orientation as well as the following activities:

  • Visit a local spice and herbal garden
  • Herbal Massage
  • Visit to a local tea factory and Ceylon Tea tasting
  • Sri Lankan cooking lesson
  • Visit to the famous Temple of the Tooth
  • Lantern making
  • Sri Lankan Dancing lesson
  • Kandy City tour
  • Gem Museum
  • Sri Lankan Food Tasting
  • Language and Culture Lesson
  • Visit to the White Buddha
  • Henna Painting with locals

If you wish to join the Culture Week, you can add this to your itinerary via the ‘add on and tours’ section of your pre-departure checklist once you have submitted your application. Transport from Kandy to Hikkaduwa will be an additional cost and you can expect to budget around £19 via bus or £84 for a taxi (this can be shared).

Volunteer schedule example

On the first day of the volunteering placement, you will be escorted to the project by our local staff and introduced to the staff at the placement you will be working with.

7:00 - 8:00 AM Breakfast at the accommodation
8:30 AM Volunteers travel to their placement

Weekends

During the weekends, volunteers are free to relax or take the opportunity to explore other parts of Hikkaduwa and Sri Lanka. Hikkaduwa itself is home to some must-see sights and natural attractions. You can visit a number of beautiful beaches, go surfing, snorkelling, or kayaking.

Nearby, the Hikkaduwa National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s three marine national parks, offering a protected area where visitors can encounter marine life up close. The Tsunami Honganji Vihara, a serene Buddhist temple, stands as a poignant memorial for those affected by the 2004 tsunami, with a large Buddha statue facing the ocean. The Seenigama Muhudu Viharaya, a small temple on an offshore island, is also accessible and offers spiritual insight as well as scenic views. A day trip to Galle is always a popular option to explore the UNESCO colonial fort with galleries, cafes, museums, and sea views!

Looking for a more relaxing weekend - there are plenty of yoga and wellness classes around town, which also offer Ayurvedic massages. Long weekends can be taken to travel further afield to destinations such as Kandy, Ella, or even Southern India.

Accommodation and WiFi

Volunteers in Hikkaduwa are accommodated in a volunteer house only a few minutes away from the beach. Bedrooms have bunk beds and you can expect to share a room with four to eight other volunteers of the same gender.

Living is comfortable and the accommodation has electricity, fans, running water. Bathrooms in the volunteer houses are all western style with a toilet, basin and a warm shower. Bedding is provided and includes a pillow with pillow case and top and bottom sheets. You will need to bring a towel, toiletries, and a mosquito net if you wish to sleep with one.

The volunteer house has a local team member staying in the house at night, and there is an 10:00 PM curfew on weeknights and 12:00 AM on weekends.

To access the internet during your program, we recommend bringing an unlocked mobile phone and purchasing a local SIM card when you arrive in Sri Lanka, as WiFi is not available in the volunteer accommodation.

Private rooms can be arranged for an additional cost subject to availability at the time.

Meals

Volunteers on the Sri Lanka program are provided with three meals a day during the week and brunch and dinner during the weekend. Breakfast includes toast, eggs, fruit, tea, coffee, and milk. Sri Lankan foods served for lunch and dinner include roti bread, dhal, curries, vegetables, and salads. Meat is rarely eaten except on festive occasions.

Bottled water is readily available in Sri Lanka and volunteers should budget approximately $5 per week for 2 liters per day. There are also water filters in the volunteer houses. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know when you apply for the program so we can discuss this with you. However, you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. The local team will do their best to see that you are well taken care of, but as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible.

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

WS
Willem Stockman

From my experience, I gained a broader medical perspective, improved my clinical and communication skills, and developed a deeper understanding of healthcare in a different cultural and resource setting. It taught me to adapt, to think creatively, and to appreciate the value of teamwork in patient care.

For anyone who is hesitant about joining this program, I would say: go for it. It’s a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and challenge yourself both personally and professionally. The support team is excellent, and you’ll come away with not only new medical knowledge but also unforgettable experiences and friendships

My placement in women's empowerment was a brand new project and I was the first volunteer to participate in this program. It was a beginning experience for me, to help design the content that would be shared with the women of the village. It was an enormously satisfying experience which gave me great personal satisfaction in watching the participants take ownership of the various activities we accomplished. My hope would be to visit Ethimale again, if possible, and reunite my time with these beautiful people. I have much caring and compassion to share with them. I know they would be happy to see me again, as I would them.

The guidance and preparation before I left for Sri Lanka made me feel very comfortable and confident in what I was embarking on. My Program Manager was great!

The local team in Sri Lanka was fantastic and was only too happy to accommodate different needs and made such an effort to make us feel so comfortable. The main coordinator went out of his way to organize and adjust different requests regarding our programs.

In regards to the accommodation at the volunteer house, my bed was so comfortable and I even had my own bathroom!

It is something I always wanted to do. So glad I did it and I would recommend that others don’t hesitate!

I met some wonderful people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. I had worried about being too old but quickly felt part of the group. The staff was always on hand for support/advice and very friendly.
