Want to make sure you visit all of the must-see sites that Guatemala has to offer? On the Mini Adventure, you'll see all of Guatemala's major hot spots in 1-week. This can can be added at the beginning or end of your volunteer program depending on your itinerary. You will be accompanied by a certified, bilingual tour guide for each trip, using Antigua as your home base between tours.
The 6-day adventure complements your volunteer experience, without the stress of trip planning! It will begin on Sunday and finish the following Saturday morning. Accommodation is included from the Saturday before your adventure begins.

STREET FOOD TOUR
Indulge your taste buds with local delicacies and learn about the cultural significance of the 4 different local cuisines you'll be discovering. Take a leisurely stroll through the community market, a lively and diverse hub for your senses. Engage with the freshness of produce, appreciate the aromas, and enjoy the vibrant textures that define Antigua's culinary scene.
PACAYA VOLCANO
Located just a short drive from Antigua, this excursion offers an unforgettable adventure to an active volcano, where you can witness its raw power, hike through lava fields, and take in stunning panoramic views. This tour is perfect for nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and those looking to experience the magic of volcanic landscapes. A memorable part of the Pacaya experience is the opportunity to roast marshmallows over the volcanic heat. The volcano's hot spots provide a unique and delicious experience as you cook marshmallows over the hot lava rock.
LAKE ATITLAN
The adventure begins with an early departure from Antigua, leading you to the picturesque basin of Panajachel after a two-hour journey. Upon arrival, check-in at the hotel, where the guide will gather the group for an exhilarating boat-taxi ride to the enchanting villages of San Juan and Santiago. Marvel at the stunning lake views as you explore San Juan's rich traditional weavings and visit Santiago's altar to Maximon, a unique Guatemalan deity. The afternoon is yours to freely explore the charms of Panajachel. You'll spend pend the night at a hotel in Panajechel.
CHICHICASTENANGO
Immerse in the vibrant Chichicastenango Market, held on Thursdays and Sundays in the town's central square. Witness the lively display of indigenous Mayans from various villages offering an array of handicrafts, colorful textiles, fresh local produce, and unique masks with animal motifs—ideal souvenirs. Enjoy one to two hours of free time to wander and admire the market's offerings before returning to Antigua, where you'll arrive in approximately 2 and a half hours.
TIKAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
During its heyday, Tikal boasted a population exceeding one hundred thousand. Discover the concealed secrets within its ruins, a hidden treasure unearthed in 1848 by Colonel Modesto Mendez and his expedition.
You'll take a short flight from Guatemala City to Santa Elena, where you'll meet your guide and travel to Tikal National Park, for yout two-day exploration that goes beyond typical sightseeing, delving into the deep history and architectural marvels of Tikal. Walk in the footsteps of the ancients as you uncover the mysteries of these remarkable constructions including temples, courtyards, and other Mayan structures including the Central Acropolis and the twin 'Q' and 'R' pyramids. Hear the stories of a once-thriving civilization and see the remnants of a city that stood the test of time.
At the end of your third day, you'll fly back to Guatemala City for your drive back to Antigua.
Important note:
The Mini Adventure is offered as an extension to your program duration and it’s an exciting experience that runs for 6 days/7 nights. This can be completed the week prior to your program beginning or the week after your program finishes. This means that if you want to volunteer for 2 weeks and add the Mini Adventure week to your itinerary, you’ll be hosted by the local team for a total of 3 weeks. Please note, if you complete this the week prior to your start date an extra night of accommodation will be required for the Saturday between this activity and your program starting, at an additional cost.
IVHQ and the local team do its best to make sure that volunteers can take part on tours together and, when possible, you will be joining a group of other tour participants. However, please note that participant numbers cannot be guaranteed. If you're traveling solo you're welcome to check with your Program Manager if other participants are signed up during your dates.
